C
A recent study by a team of researchers from Canada has uncovered that birds living in cities not just are better at problem-solving and more skilled in tasks than those in the suburbs, but also have stronger immune (有免疫力的) systems!
The research, headed by Audet, a PhD student at a university, examined the cognitive (认知的) abilities of city birds with those of their country cousins. The team did their study in Barbados because it needed a broad range of situations: from crowded modern cities to the countryside. They began by catching some birds from various parts of the Caribbean Island. The birds were then given several tasks. Some tested their associative learning skills while others were to observe how creative they were at problem-solving. While country birds are also much braver, the city birds appear to be more careful when facing unfamiliar things.
The results did not surprise the researchers. After all, birds living in cities and towns face many more challenges and dangers than those that live in the country. But as it turns out, the city birds prove to have better immunity and are therefore more resistant (有抵抗力的) to diseases than those living in the countryside. While additional studies need to be done to see if this is true for all, city birds, there is no reason to believe that the results would be any different.
Though this is the first time researchers have compared the cognitive abilities of birds living in different conditions, it is not the first study to examine the differences between city and country birds. Previous research has shown that blackbirds in cities are similarly more careful than country blackbirds, and that sparrows and blackbirds living in cuties sing at a higher frequency to be heard over city noise and to make up for sound distortions (失真) caused by tall buildings. If only birds knew the advantages of living among humans, maybe more would move to cities!
18. How are city birds different from country birds according to the research?
A. Country birds have a wider range of challenges to survive.
B. City birds are braver when facing unfamiliar things or situations.
C. City birds have a weaker immune system because of air pollution.
D. Country birds are less skilled at jobs requiring creation and skills.
19. What conclusion does the author think further studies will draw?
A. Country birds are more careful in dangerous situations.
B. City birds are more likely to get sick than country birds.
C. City birds are more resistant to diseases than country birds.
D. Country birds can be taught the advantages of living in cities.
20. Why do city birds sing at a higher frequency than country birds?
A. There is too much noise in the city.
B. There are a wider range of situations.
C. The birds live far away from each other.
D. There are more dangers in cities for them.
21. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What a PhD student has done has surprised the world.
B. City birds are smarter and healthier than country birds.
C. The necessity and ways to move country birds to cities.
D. Research into birds’ immune systems and learning power.
D 19. C 20. A 21. B

根据第一段“A recent study by a team of researchers from Canada has uncovered that birds living in cities not just are better at problem-solving and more skilled in tasks than those in the suburbs, but also have stronger immune (有免疫力的) systems!(一项由加拿大研究团队最近进行的研究发现,生活在城市中的鸟类不仅在解决问题和完成任务方面比郊区的鸟类更擅长,而且它们的免疫系统也更强!)”
根据第三段“But as it turns out, the city birds prove to have better immunity and are therefore more resistant to diseases than those living in the countryside. While additional studies need to be done to see if this is true for all, city birds, there is no reason to believe that the results would be any different.(但事实证明,城市鸟类的免疫力更强,因此比乡村鸟类更能抵抗疾病。虽然还需要进行更多的研究来确定这一点是否适用于所有城市鸟类,但没有理由相信结果会有什么不同)”可推知,作者认为进一步研究会得出城市鸟类比乡村鸟类更能抵抗疾病的结论。故选C。
【20题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Previous research has shown that blackbirds in cities are similarly more careful than country blackbirds, and that sparrows and blackbirds living in cities sing at a higher frequency to be heard over city noise and to make up for sound distortions caused by tall buildings.(先前的研究表明,城市里的黑鸟比乡村的黑鸟更谨慎,而且生活在城市里的麻雀和黑鸟会以更高的频率唱歌,以便在城市噪音中被听到,并弥补高楼大厦引起的声音失真)”可推知,城市鸟类之所以以更高的频率唱歌,是为了在城市噪音中被听到,即因为城市里噪音太大。故选A。
根据第一段“A recent study by a team of researchers from Canada has uncovered that birds living in cities not just are better at problem-solving and more skilled in tasks than those in the suburbs, but also have stronger immune systems.(加拿大一个研究小组最近的一项研究发现,生活在城市的鸟类不仅比郊区的鸟类更擅长解决问题,任务技能也更高,而且它们的免疫系统也更强)”可知,文章主要讲述了城市和乡村鸟类在认知能力和免疫系统方面的差异,即城市鸟类比乡村鸟类更聪明、更健康。故选B。
D
The message is drummed into us from childhood: forgive people who’ve wronged you, because it’s the right thing to do. Forgiveness is a virtue, we’re told — the only way for us to truly move on and heal, freed from the baggage of bearing ill will.
However, I’m not buying it. Forgiving someone can indeed be a beautiful thing, but it’s not always what’s best for us. In fact, if someone has hurt you deeply and the relationship isn’t healthy, trying to “fix” things can do more harm than good.
Most of us would probably agree that forgiving a wrongdoer means letting go of negative feelings — like anger and resentment — towards them, as if nothing happened. Actually this isn’t helpful. It pressures us to minimize our feelings and revise our boundaries — to say “it’s OK” when for us, it isn’t. While it’s not a good idea to focus on negative thoughts, recognizing and processing all of that pain is an important part of the healing journey. And when someone doesn’t make us feel seen or safe, forgiving them can actually reduce our self-esteem.
A 2010 research paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that folks who forgave partners that didn’t make them feel valued had less respect for themselves. Letting minor offences that happen now and again slide can be great for any relationship, but repeatedly forgiving bad behavior can encourage that person to keep hurting you.
At least, that’s what 2011 research by psychology professor James McNulty argues. He found that when a partner was more likely to forgive those acts, the aggressor was more likely to keep committing them. McNulty suggests that this is because facing the consequences of their actions is what motivates people to change their ways, and being offered a clean slate can be a kind of pass to avoid making changes. So forgiving frequent and major offences, like verbal or physical abuse, can do more harm than good.
For me, this speaks to the core tension in the idea. Instead of looking to forgiveness like a magic medicine, we can focus on recognizing what happened and coming to terms with it, however that looks for us and without any sense of obligation towards our offender.
22. What does the author think about the message in paragraph 1?
A. It’s reasonable. B. It’s debatable.
C. It’s convincing. D. It’s unquestionable.
23. How does the author develop the text?
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving statistics.
C. By quoting researchers’ views. D. By sharing his own experiences.
24. What does the underlined words “a clean slate” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. A repeated offence. B. A magic medicine.
C. A terrible consequence. D. A complete forgiveness.
25. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. Forgiving is always a virtue. B. Forgiving can change everything.
C. Forgiving others sometimes depends. D. Forgiving others always seems impossible.
B 23. C 24. D 25. C

由文章第二段中“However, I’m not buying it. Forgiving someone can indeed be a beautiful thing, but it’s not always what’s best for us. (然而,我并不买账。原谅别人确实是一件美好的事情,但这并不总是对我们最好的。)”可知,作者认为第一段的信息是有争议的。故选B。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段中“A 2010 research paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that folks who forgave partners that didn’t make them feel valued had less respect for themselves. (2010年发表在《人格与社会心理学杂志》上的一篇研究论文发现,那些原谅了没有让他们感到有价值的伴侣的人,对自己的尊重程度更低。)”和文章第五段中“At least, that’s what 2011 research by psychology professor James McNulty argues. (至少,心理学教授詹姆斯·麦克纳尔蒂在2011年的研究中是这么认为的。)”可知,作者是引用研究者的观点展开文章的。故选C。
【24题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第五段中“He found that when a partner was more likely to forgive those acts, the aggressor was more likely to keep committing them. (他发现,当伴侣更有可能原谅这些行为时,攻击者更有可能继续犯下这些行为。)”和后文“So forgiving frequent and major offences, like verbal or physical abuse, can do more harm than good. (因此,原谅经常发生的重大过错,比如语言或身体虐待,弊大于利。)”可知,麦克纳尔蒂认为,面对自己行为的后果会促使人们改变自己的行为方式,而完全原谅他们可能是一种避免做出改变的通行证。所以“a clean slate”意思是“完全的原谅”。A. A repeated offence一再冒犯;B.A magic medicine一种神奇的药;C.A terrible consequence一个可怕的后果;D.
通读全文,尤其是由文章第二段中“Forgiving someone can indeed be a beautiful thing, but it’s not always what’s best for us. In fact, if someone has hurt you deeply and the relationship isn’t healthy, trying to “fix” things can do more harm than good. (原谅某人确实是一件美好的事情,但这并不总是对我们最好的。事实上,如果有人深深地伤害了你,而这段关系不健康,试图“修复”事情可能弊大于利。)”和文章最后一段“For me, this speaks to the core tension in the idea. Instead of looking to forgiveness like a magic medicine, we can focus on recognizing what happened and coming to terms with it, however that looks for us and without any sense of obligation towards our offender. (对我来说,这说明了这个想法的核心张力。与其把宽恕当成一剂灵丹妙药,我们不如专注于认识到发生了什么,并接受它,不管它如何寻找我们,对冒犯我们的人没有任何义务。)”可知,作者认为原谅确实是一件美好的事情,但这并不总是对我们最好的。有时原谅可能弊大于利,所以原谅别人有时要视情况而定。选项C“Forgiving others sometimes depends (原谅别人有时要视情况而定)”符合题意。故选C。

In higher education, 21st-century librarians are seeing their roles changing. Universities are also taking a new look at library buildings. However, one thing is clear: ____26____
Libraries meet students’ new needs, digitally
To support modern research, libraries will need to offer students access to the digital versions of scholarly research. Ringling College of Art and Design set out to create a library that would better provide its students with the services they actually need. ____27____
Flexible workspaces
____28____ Most commonly, universities are redesigning libraries to make them suitable for collaboration — meaning open, social spaces where small and large groups can gather and share materials. For example, Norwich University in Vermont decided to create more high-tech collaboration spaces in its library by designing 11 group study rooms that have movable furniture.

Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, learning to classrooms, laboratories and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist.
In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “It’s just the beginning,” she thought. “I’ll come in last for sure.”
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile”. Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. Never in her wildest dream had she imagined that she could achieve such an eye-catching score! Conquering this one mile was a milestone in her running career! Amazingly, Coach Pitts’ positive recognition installed an enormous sense of achievement into her heart. Enthusiastic cheers and thunderous applauses from her classmates kept her on the top of the world. Breathless and exhausted, she realized that overcoming seemingly the toughest challenges just needed a smart strategy like her mind trick. Her initial self-doubt gave way to self-confidence. Being a freshman, she tended to get lost in the 6-story maze, leaving her so helpless. Staring at the towering teaching building, Eva came up with a good idea, with a smile blooming across her face.
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. No sooner had she returned to the confusing maze than she set out to explore the first floor. Convinced that her mind trick would locate her in the school as soon as possible, she came to a gym, which was well-equipped with various workout facilities. Next to the gym was a cafeteria, which provided a wide range of foods and drinks. As Eva walked back to her classroom, she noticed that she felt less overwhelmed by this huge complex. Time ticking away, Eva eventually got familiar with the vast maze in the way she finished the one-mile run. One lap at a time did work! So did one floor a week! It dawned on her that goals are easier to achieve in small steps.

There are many changes that can happen in a person’s life. Some changes are very small and would not affect your life very much. However, other events could be very important and could change a person’s whole life. The important event that changed my life is coming to the United States to study.
When first arrived in this country, I realized that a great transformation (转变) would happen in my life both physically and mentally. After spending more than two months in the United States, I firmly believe that moving to the United States is a beneficial change for me. For example, enjoy the American-style- meal which includes having a fresh salad instead of cooked vegetables. This method of cooking vegetables helps me absorb more vitamins from them.
Additionally, this most important change enables me to think differently and internationally. This is my first time living in North-America country. Hence, I have a brand-new chance to experience a new culture. By knowing more about different cultures, I have become more considerate and understanding of various habits as well as behaviors from different races.
Since I came here, I have changed my eating and sleeping habits in a good way. Thus, this change is very important and beneficial for me

C City birds are more resistant to diseases than country birds.

Modern libraries need digitally informed librarians
In today’s university culture, librarians should make sure students have a solid understanding of the digital resources they are using. ____29____ These and other changes are also influencing the way that universities teach the next generation of library professionals. At the University of Michigan, a new library science program will create education models that help future librarians complete the difficult tasks of supporting researchers.
Digital tools give libraries staying power
____30____ However, university libraries are here to stay. By using digital tools and creating flexible spaces, libraries will continue to be relevant to colleges. In fact, digital tools have made it even easier for libraries to serve students.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
