Julia Hawkins, who was nicknamed “Hurricane”, died on Oct. 22, 2024, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a “very short illness,” her daughter, Margaret Martens, confirmed to ABC News.
“She had quite a run,” Martens said of the extraordinary life of her mom, who is survived by her four children as well as three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Julia Hawkins picked up the sport of running at the age of 100. She set a world record in the100-meter dash at the 2017 National Senior Games. At the 2019 National Senior Games, Hawkins won gold medals in both the 50-meter dash and the 100-meter dash in the women’s 100-plus division. At that time, Hawkins was believed to be the oldest woman to compete on an American track, according to the National Senior Games Association.
Hawkins told “Good Morning America” in 2019 that she turned to running as an alternative to competitive cycling, a sport in which she also won multiple national titles after picking it up later in life.
“I just keep busy. I keep moving,” Hawkins told “GMA” in 2019 about her secret to longevity. “I don’t do any exercises particularly. I used to, but I don’t think I need to anymore.” “I’ve always been careful how I eat, eat healthy and keep my weight at a certain point,” she added.
Martens said Hawkins also attributed her longevity to her many hobbies, which included fly fishing, gardening, singing and watching Louisiana State University football.
Hawkins’ late husband, who died in 2013 at the age of 95, was a professor at LSU, according to Martens. In 2021, Hawkins ran her last race at the age of 105 in her home state of Louisiana. She set a new record during the race as the only woman in the 105 — 109 age group to run the 100-meter dash.

Rogue waves, or killer waves, are large and unpredictable surface waves that can be extremely dangerous to ships and structures such as lighthouses. They are very uncertain and often come unexpectedly from directions other than common winds and waves. They are distinct from tsunamis, which are long wavelength waves, often almost unnoticeable in deep waters and are always caused by earthquakes.
For centuries, rogue waves have been part of marine folk legends, but they are now proven to exist and are known to be a natural ocean phenomenon. Most reports of extreme storm waves say they look like “walls of water.” They are often steep-sided with unusually deep troughs (波谷) .
Since these extreme storm waves are uncommon, measurements and analysis of this phenomenon are extremely rare. Exactly how and when rogue waves form is still under investigation, but there are several known causes:
Constructive interference. Extreme waves often form because swells (浪涌), while traveling across the ocean, do so at different speeds and directions. As these swells pass through one another, their tops, troughs, and lengths sometimes fall together and strengthen each other. This process can form unusually large, towering waves that quickly disappear. If the swells are traveling in the same direction, these mountainous waves may last for several minutes before dying down.
Focusing of wave energy. When waves formed by a storm develop in a water current against the normal wave direction, an interaction can take place, which results in a shortening of the wave frequency. This can cause the waves to dynamically join together, forming very big rogue waves. The currents where these are sometimes seen are the Gulf Stream and Agulhas current. Extreme waves developed in this fashion tend to be longer lived.
“Rogue waves are caused by a combination of many factors that, until now, have not been combined into a single risk assessment,” said Professor Dion Häfner.
8. What can we learn about rogue waves from the text?
A. They’re unnoticeable and rare. B. They’re huge and dangerous.
C. They’re sudden and preventable. D. They’re predictable and usual.
9. What does paragraph 4 mainly explain?
A. Definition of rogue waves. B. Legends about rogue waves.

B. Rogue waves will be effectively predicted soon.
C. Scientists have known rogue waves much better.
D. Risks of rogue waves are being assessed at present.
11. In which section of a web page may this text appear?

Wake up early enough and, depending on where you live, you’ll likely hear a flock of birds singing. It is a natural behavior, but why?
According to the Woodland Trust, this early singing is known as the dawn chorus, and it can start as early as 4 a. m. and last for several hours. Birds do it to attract mates and warn other birds to avoid their turf (地盘). One theory as to why they choose the early hours to transmit these important messages is that the low visibility makes it hard to do other bird activities, like seeking food. Keeping their activity level low, they choose to sing instead.
Another theory argues that birds use the morning vocals to project an image of strength. By singing with passion, they’re letting other birds know they survived the night - no guarantee in nature - and would make for an excellent mate.
Like a good recording studio, the early morning hours also allow birds to deliver a clear tune thanks to the cooler, drier air. Because birds have distinctive sounds, it helps them be more easily identified by birds within listening distance.
There used to be a widespread theory that birds sang so much in the mornings because the sounds could travel greater distances due to stable air current, but it was disproved in a study by researchers at the University of Western Ontario in 2003. They played recordings of sparrows at dawn and midday. Then they found the songs didn’t travel farther, but they were more consistent.
Because birds only have so much energy to belt one out, singing when they stand the best chance of being heard makes sense. For a bird, an early morning session is like having the perfect environment for their performance.
12. What does the underlined word “transmit” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Communicate. B. Change. C. Repeat. D. Illustrate.
13. Why do birds sing early in the morning?
A. To seek food. B. To enjoy the cool air.
C. To avoid predators. D. To signal their survival.
14. What did the 2003 study prove?
A. Midday songs attract more mates. B. Morning songs are more consistent.
C. Birds sing more clearly in cooler air. D. Air currents help songs travel farther.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Why birds sing at dawn. B. When birds begin to sing.
C. How birds attract their mates. D. What birds convey in singing.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. A

“Look who’s here to see you, Brenda,” the nurse said. She led a tired-looking woman to the girl’s bedside. Brenda huddled (蜷缩) on her side, facing the wall. When her mother touched her shoulder, she pulled her head closer to her chest, as if making her body smaller would help her disappear altogether. The nurse patted the mother’s shoulder. “Brenda’s still not talking to us,” she said in a low voice.
Brenda’s mother bit her lip to keep herself from crying. She remembered exactly how cheerful and happy Brenda had been before the car accident that led to the amputation (截肢) of her leg. She’d been one of the most popular girls in her sixth-grade class. When Brenda first awakened from her surgery, she became extremely angry at her mother. Why had this happened? Now, she felt like no one would ever want to be her friend. Then, Brenda had just stopped talking.
“I wish/I could bring her friends to visit her,” said Brenda’s mother. “But it’s just too long a bus trip, about three hours each way.” The nurse smiled. “Don’t worry. We have a plan.” Shortly after Brenda’s mother left, two nurses wheeled in a stretcher (担架). “Moving day, Brenda!” One said happily. “We need this bed for someone who’s really sick. We’ve picked out the best roommate in the hospital for you.”
Before Brenda could say no, the nurses had rolled her onto the stretcher and taken her away down the hall. The room was full of light, posters and music. “Here’ s your new roomie, Annie Wiggle-Do,” one nurse told a dark-haired teenager in the other bed. “She’s just beginning to get better, so please don’t kill her with your poor jokes.”
Fourteen-year-old Annie laughed. Not replying to the nurses, she turned to Brenda. “I lost my legs from bone cancer,” she announced. “What happened to yours?” Without waiting for a reply, Annie reached up and took off her hair, continuing “Oh, look, the stuff they gave me to kill the cancer also killed my hair.” “So, any wig (假发) will do, “‘Annie Wiggle-Do’?” Annie began laughing at her own joke.

【答案】范文
From a box under her bed, Annie pulled out a lot of wigs. “Look at this one,” she said, holding up a bright pink wig. “I call it my ‘cotton candy’ look.” Then, she grabbed a blue one. “And this? ‘Ocean Wave Annie!’” She tried on each wig dramatically. Brenda glanced at her out of the corner of her eyes, her lips twitched in the smallest hint of a smile. Annie caught it immediately. “Ah, there it is! The tiniest smile!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands. She leaned closer and whispered, “I knew you couldn’t resist my charm.” Brenda rolled her eyes but found herself feeling lighter.
Gradually, Brenda began chatting with Annie. At first, it was just a few short replies to Annie’s endless chatter. But soon, Brenda started asking questions about the wigs and sharing her own story. Annie listened attentively and said, “You’re not alone, you know. It’s okay to feel sad, but life doesn’t stop. We make our own new normal.” For the first time in weeks, Brenda felt understood and hopeful, realizing that maybe, just maybe, she could find happiness again.

Hawkins’ late husband who died in 2013 at the age of 95, was a professor at LSU, according to Martens. In 2021, Hawkins ran her last race at the age of 105 in her home state of Louisiana. She set a new record during the race as the only woman in the 105 — 109 age group to run the 100-meter dash.
4. How old was Julia Hawkins when she died?
A. 109. B. 108. C. 107. D. 106.

A. Her influence. B. Her motivations.
C. Her popularity. D. Her achievements.
6. What can be inferred about Hawkins from the text?

7. Which word best describes Julia Hawkins?
A. Passionate. B. Professional. C. Humble. D. Humorous.

By singing with passion they’re letting other birds know they survived the night - no guarantee in nature - and would make for an excellent mate.
