Once upon a time, there was a farmer.❶ One day, he was working in
the field when he saw a hare run into a tree stump by accident and die.❷ The
farmer took the hare home and cooked a delicious meal for himself. That
night, he thought, “I don’t have to work so hard. All I have to do is wait
for a hare every day by the tree stump.”❸ So from then on, he gave up
farming, and waited by the tree stump. But just from then on, he never
saw another hare run into the tree stump.

Long ago, there was a good and honest woodcutter. One day, when
he was cutting wood beside a lake, he lost his axe(斧头) in the water.
The water was deep, and he could not get his axe back. He had only one
axe, and he needed it to make a living. He sat down and began to cry. As
he cried, a spirit appeared. She asked the man what was wrong. She
listened to the wood-cutter and felt sorry for him. But what could she do to
help him? Suddenly she came up with a great idea. The spirit dove(潜

“Is this the axe you lost?” asked the spirit. The man looked at the

So the spirit dove into the water again and brought back a silver axe.
Once again, the man said that was not his axe. The spirit went down a third
time and returned with the woodcutter’s old axe. “That is the right one!”
said the woodcutter. The spirit was happy with the woodcutter’s honesty. So
she gave him the other two axes as gifts.

Unit 8 Once upon a Time
时文阅读A
[热点素材](2025·原创)阅读理解。
“千帆”卫星织大网
When we go hiking in the mountains, we may be unable to find a
phone signal and get lost. Thanks to a new satellite network, this will not
happen in the future.
In August, 2024, China launched a group of 18 satellites into space.
This was the first step in building “Qianfan”, a large communications
network.
SpaceSail, a company in Shanghai, is leading the work. “This
year, we will send 108 satellites. In the end, there will be more than 10,
000 of them in Qianfan,” Lu Ben said.
When all the satellites are in place, Qianfan will provide us with fast
and stable Internet services. More importantly, these services will cover
the whole world. Whether we are in the forests or on the seas, we can
connect to Qianfan on our phones and surf the Internet.
What makes Qianfan so special? All the satellites are in low earth
orbit. They will stay between about 160 kilometres and 2,000 kilometres
above the earth’s surface. In comparison(相较而言), some traditional
satellites are about 20,000 kilometres above us. The higher they are, the
more expensive and the less stable they can be.
▲
Companies from many countries and regions are trying to build
networks like Qianfan, including SpaceX from the USA. But as more
satellites go up, the space around the earth is getting more crowded. So
China is acting quickly to send all the satellites of the Qianfan network into
space.

“When was the last time you sharpened(磨) your axe?” the boss
asked. “Sharpen? I have no time to sharpen my axe. I keep trying to cut

人造鸡肉
In June, 2023, in the US, two companies started to sell special
chicken meat. This kind of meat isn’t from chickens. Instead, it’s from
animal cells(细胞) that grow in a lab(实验室).
The companies say that their meat is better for the environment(环
境) than meat from animals. Feeding animals needs lots of farms and
water. It also makes a lot of pollution(污染).

The lab-grown meat is made from animal cells. It is very hard to tell it
from real meat. It looks, smells, and tastes like chicken. At first many
people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat. Lots of people think that it
just sounds weird(怪诞的). But after people eat the meat, they usually
say, “Oh, it tastes like chicken.”
But right now, the lab-grown meat is more expensive than meat from
animals. Only expensive restaurants can serve this kind of meat. It may be a
long time before you are able to buy lab-grown chicken in shops.
