I was talking to a friend about plans for her preschooler Cathy. Their home language is English, but my friend’s father is French, and I wondered if she would let Cathy attend the local French immersion (沉浸式) kindergarten.
She surprised me by saying that her dad advised against doing that, saying, “You have a very bright little girl who’s curious about everything. French is only one subject. You don’t need to make it the center of her education for the important early years of school.”
Yes, there are many benefits of speaking more than one language, but that doesn’t mean it’s always a good idea to make your kindergartener receive an immersion program.
If you look up “second language learning”, you’ll see much about the advantages of being bilingual (双语的),mostly written to advertise language schools and maps. But if you dig deeper, you’ll have trouble finding solid research into the advantages of second language learning, other than in older age groups where it does have strong cognitive (认知的) benefits.
My clinical experience with kids is consistent with my friend’s father’s observation and with th finding of the British Academy that second language learning can be great for kids, but isn’t always. I depends on a lot of complex factors.
For some young children, immersion classes in French or other languages can make school more interesting, enriching their lives and enlarging their sense of the world. Children who enter school with strong first language and mathematical skills can enjoy learning another language, finding new ways of understanding and thinking about what they have already known.
For others, these programs can be curiosity-crushing. I’ve worked with many very smart young kids who are deeply frustrated at school because their scientific, technologica1, or mathematical interests far outperform their ability to discuss their enthusiasm in a new language.
When looking for a school for your preschooler, consider their individual learning needs, strengths and challenges, and look for what you think might be the best match.
4. Why did Cathy’s grandpa oppose her attending the local French immersion kindergarten?
A. It might hold back Cathy’s curiosity. B. Cathy was too small to learn well.
C. It might affect Cathy’s friendship. D. Cathy had no gift for languages.
5. What does the research reveal about seniors’ learning a second language?
A. It’s challenging. B. It’s beneficial.
C. It’s controversial. D. It’s energy-consuming.
6. What may the author advise parents to do when choosing a kindergarten?
A. Select the school closest to their home.
B. Make sure the teachers are native speakers.
C. Consider their children’s learningstyles and needs.
D. Focus on the quality of schools’ language immersion programs.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The benefits of early bilingual learning.
B. The suitable age to start learning a second language.
C. Best ways to prepare kids for language immersion programs.
D. “My” reflections on immersing preschools in foreign language programs.
A 5. B 6. C 7. D

Engineers at Princeton University have measured the cooling benefits of a simple solution for beating urban heat: reflecting sunlight back from where it came by equipping building walls and roadways in urban centers with retroreflective (反光的) materials.
“With climate change and the increasing frequency and persistence of extreme heat events, more people in the U.S. die from extreme heat than from any other weather-related disaster-heat kills more than tornadoes, tsunamis, and hurricanes combined,” said Elie Bou-Zeid, professor of civil and environmental engineering.
Several technologies have been raised to fight against the issue of urban overheating, including cool pavements and roof coatings. However, when sunlight hits these cooling technologies, it can be kicked back in any number of directions instead of in one focused direction, which means that highly reflective materials could have an opposite result if applied because sunlight could be reflected onto the ground, walls, and even the passers-by.
“Actually, retroreflective materials are already used in transportation, where they are commonly found in road signs and paint to improve nighttime visibility, but an important question is how efficient we can make them and whether we can engineer them to have the performances we want,” said Jyotirmoy Mandal, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering.
Unlike common highly reflective materials, retroreflectors can reflect incoming sunlight with limited scattering (散射). Consequently, most sunlight hitting a retroreflector on a building wall or city street would be directed back in the same direction it came from-and out of the urban canyon. In this way, the retroreflectors can release the sunlight that would otherwise be stuck in the urban canyon and exacerbate the urban overheating problem.
Ultimately, they want to create a set of guidelines for policymakers, planners, and materials engineers. If you’re an urban planner, for example, and you know the latitude of your city, the width-height ratio and the direction of your streets, you can easily use their results to pick the suitable surfaces for applying these retroreflective materials and estimate the cooling benefits you might receive in doing so.
8. What may Elie Bou-Zeid warn people of in paragraph 2?
A. The frequency of natural disasters. B. Thie urgency of keeping people cool.
C. The unpredictability of climate change. D. The necessity of temperature monitoring.
9. What is the limitation of current cooling technologies?
A. Influence upon the city’s appearance. B. Disturbance of the view of passes-by.
C. Production of something poisonous to humans. D. Inability to control the direction of reflected light.
10. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Relieve. B. Cause. C. Intensify. D. Address.
11. What is probably the final goal of the engineers?
A. To increase urban green spaces. B. To personalize reflective materials.
C. To simplify existing building designs. D. To reduce costs of construction materials.
B 9. D 10. C 11. B

根据第二段中Elie Bou-Zeid的话“With climate change and the increasing frequency and persistence of extreme heat events, more people in the U.S. die from extreme heat than from any other weather related disaster heat kills more than tornadoes, tsunamis, and hurricanes combined (随着气候变化以及极端高温事件发生频率和持续时间的增加,美国死于极端高温的人数比死于任何其他与天气相关灾害的人数都多——高温造成的死亡人数比龙卷风、海啸和飓风加起来还多)”可知,极端高温造成了很多人死亡,情况十分危急,由此可推断出,Elie Bou-Zeid是在警告给人们降温的紧迫性。
根据第三段中“However, when sunlight hits these cooling technologies, it can be kicked back in any number of directions instead of in one focused direction, which means that highly reflective materials could have an opposite result if applied because sunlight could be reflected onto the ground, walls, and even the passers by.(然而,当阳光照射到这些降温技术时,它可以被反射到任意方向,而不是集中在一个方向上,这意味着如果使用高反射材料,可能会产生相反的效果,因为阳光可能会被反射到地面、墙壁,甚至行人身上)”可知,目前的降温技术不能控制反射光的方向。
根据划线词前文“In this way, the retroreflectors can release the sunlight that would otherwise be stuck in the urban canyon...(通过这种方式,反向反射器可以释放原本困在城市峡谷中的阳光……)”
根据最后一段“Ultimately, they want to create a set of guidelines for policymakers, planners, and materials engineers. If you’re an urban planner, for example, and you know the latitude of your city, the width height ratio and the direction of your streets, you can easily use their results to pick the suitable surfaces for applying these retroreflective materials and estimate the cooling benefits you might receive in doing so.(最终,他们想为政策制定者、规划者和材料工程师制定一套指导方针。例如,如果你是一名城市规划师,并且你知道你所在城市的纬度、街道的宽高比和方向,你可以很容易地利用他们的研究结果来选择适合应用这些反光材料的表面,并估算这样做可能获得的降温效果)”可知,工程师们的最终目标是根据不同城市的具体情况,为不同的表面选择合适的反光材料,也就是使反光材料个性化。故选B项。
D
Inflation (通货膨胀) is the word on everyone’s lips, as our coffers (金库) take a hit and prices seem to rise constantly.
Meanwhile, inflation remains stubbornly high in many developed economies despite the interest rate rises designed to bring prices down. The latest figures for the U. K. came in above expectations at 8.7% on an annual basis, while the U. S. Consumer Price Index (指数) (CPI) for May rose by 4% from the previous year. Some economists have found themselves considering a surprising potential contributor: music concerts. But what do concerts and the economy have to do with one another?
From top singers to famous bands, Klaus Baader, global chief economist at Societe Generale, has tickets to see various artists this year. “One of the things that struck me as odd is that acquiring tickets for these concerts nowadays means people have to tighten their belt for a while,” he said.
“And a concert trip doesn’t end with a single ticket. It’s also related to Coca- Cola or hot dogs, the prices of which are always hiked up when shows take place, let alone the accommodation,” he explained.
Take the Renaissance World Tour by a famous American singer- songwriter whose first stop was in Stockholm in May as an example. “In the Swedish May inflation numbers, hotel prices rose more than what is usual for May,” said Filip Andersson, from Danske Bank. “Hotels in the Stockholm region were reportedly fully booked the weeks around the event and prices thus skyrocketed. Due to a third of Sweden’s hotel rooms being in the nation’s capital, prices rose dramatically on a national scale.”
Economists have nicknamed the phenomenon: “tourflation”, which has stimulated analysts to give a lot of thought to the upswing. “The concert market is booming. Understandably, this relates to supply and demand forces— consumers are most interested in making up for their time lost during the COVID-19 lockdowns,” Baader explained. He also pointed to changes in how musicians make a profit. “Artists’ models have changed from making money by selling CDs towards earning revenues mostly from concerts,” Baader added.
The impact of concerts on inflation might be short- lived. In Sweden's case, Andersson believes the normalization of inflation levels will occur later after the concert.
12. What can be concluded about inflation from paragraph 2?
A. It is a hard-to-tackle and lasting concern. B. It is positively correlated with interest rates.
C. It is much worse in rich developed countries. D. It is an outcome of ineffective financial adjustments.
13. What was Klaus Baader astonished by?
A. The limited food choices in concerts. B. The lack of availability of concert tickets.
C. The popularity of top singers and famous bands. D. The overall high expenses for attending concerts.
14. What does the example of the tour in Stockholm show?
A. Concerts can boost the acceptability of a city. B. Concerts promote the growth of local entertainment.
C. Concerts do more harm than good to the host city. D. Concerts can have broader impacts on the economy.
15. What does Klaus Baader aim to explain in the sixth paragraph?
A. The reason for artists’ shifting their income models.
B. The supply and demand conflict in the music industry.
C. The underlying factors behind the tourflation phenomenon.
D. The impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on the concert market.
A 13. D 14. D 15. C

根据第二段中的“Meanwhile, inflation remains stubbornly high in many developed economies despite the interest rate rises designed to bring prices down. The latest figures for the U. K. came in above expectations at 8.7% on an annual basis, while the U. S. Consumer Price Index (指数) (CPI) for May rose by 4% from the previous year. (与此同时,在许多发达经济体,尽管加息旨在降低物价,但通胀仍居高不下。英国的最新数据高于预期,同比增长8.7%,而美国5月份的消费者价格指数(CPI)比去年同期上涨了4%。)”可知,通过金融措施如利率上涨也难以解决通货膨胀问题,因此可推知,通货膨胀是一个难以解决且持续存在的问题。故选A。
根据第三段中的““One of the things that struck me as odd is that acquiring tickets for these concerts nowadays means people have to tighten their belt for a while,” he said. (“让我感到奇怪的一件事是,现在买这些音乐会的票意味着人们不得不在一段时间内勒紧裤腰带,”他说。)”和第四段中的““And a concert trip doesn’t end with a single ticket. It’s also related to Coca- Cola or hot dogs, the prices of which are always hiked up when shows take place, let alone the accommodation,” he explained. (音乐会之旅不会以一张票结束。这也与可口可乐或热狗有关,演出一开始,这些东西的价格就会上涨,更不用说住宿了。”)”可知,巴德尔对看演唱会的整体高费用感到惊讶。故选D。
14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的““In the Swedish May inflation numbers, hotel prices rose more than what is usual for May,” said Filip Andersson, from Danske Bank. “Hotels in the Stockholm region were reportedly fully booked the weeks around the event and prices thus skyrocketed. Due to a third of Sweden’s hotel rooms being in the nation’s capital, prices rose dramatically on a national scale.”(“瑞典丹斯克银行的菲利普·安德森表示:“在瑞典5月份的通胀数据中,酒店价格涨幅超过了5月份的正常水平。”据报道,斯德哥尔摩地区的酒店在活动前后几周被订满,因此价格飙升。由于瑞典三分之一的酒店客房位于首都,因此房价在全国范围内大幅上涨。”)”可知,拿去斯德哥尔摩看演唱会举例是为了说明在某个城市举办演唱会,会对其经济造成影响甚至会波及全国,故音乐会对经济有更广泛的影响。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Economists have nicknamed the phenomenon: “tourflation”, which has stimulated analysts to give a lot of thought to the upswing. “The concert market is booming. Understandably, this relates to supply and demand forces— consumers are most interested in making up for their time lost during the COVID-19 lockdowns,” Baader explained. He also pointed to changes in how musicians make a profit. “Artists’ models have changed from making money by selling CDs towards earning revenues mostly from concerts,” Baader added.(经济学家给这种现象起了个绰号:“通货膨胀”,这促使分析人士对经济的回升进行了大量思考。
Find an insect in your food can be a moment of horror that kills the mood and you appetite immediately. But that might be about to change. ___16___
The market research predicts the global market for edible (可食用的) insects will grow sharply. So whats behind this expected increase in appetite for insects? ___17___ And the answer lies in understanding how insects compare to other food types in terms of production and farming.
Insects produce less harmful gas than most mainstream farm animals per kilo of live weight. A cow, for example, produces 2.8 kg of greenhouse gas per kilo of live body weight. Insects, on the other hand, produce just 2 grams. ___18___Far each kilo it weighs, a cow needs 10 kg of feed. Insects, on the other hand, need just 1.7 kg.
Water, which is becoming an increasingly rare resource in some parts of the world and is used liberally in intensive farming, offers another interesting comparison. To produce a single gram of insect protein, you’d need 23 litres of water. ___19___But to get that same gram of protein from cattle, you need 112 litres of water.
___20___ Compared with raising traditional livestock (家畜) such as sheep, pigs or cattle, farming insects generally means that there will be no more dealing with mud and dirt and an end to changing heavy bags of feed. And forget about having to go outdoors in all weather conditions to manhandle livestock. The requirement for investment in equipment will be different, too. This will be farming on a much smaller scale, reducing the need for large and expensive machinery.
It may not be too long before we can all buy bag of edible insects at our local grocery store.
A. That might sound like a lot.
B. There are a number of factors in play.
C. Possibly, well soon be voluntarily enjoying insects.
D. Insects weigh much less than traditional farm animals.
E. For farmers, raising insects can be much easier and save money.
F. The majority of individuals have a strong dislike for insects.
G. They also consume fewer resources than traditional livestock.
C 17. B 18. G 19. A 20. E

I am a deaf man, from California, the USA, and I once studied at Gallaudet University in Washington, the world’s first school for the advanced education of the deaf.
It was Christmas time. The campus was nearly empty, so I was almost alone and felt quite lonely. It was my first Christmas away from my family - with no Christmas tree, no burning fireplace, no tasty dinner, no laughter and no gifts to open. Because of having no source of income, I just could not afford to fly home, and felt awfully sorry for myself at that special moment.
On a dark, rainy afternoon, feeling down, I forced myself to a nearby post office to send a package home. Normally, I wear a hearing aid from early in the morning till bedtime in the evening. That day I just did not want to hear anything, co I left my hearing aid in my dormitory room and was unable to hear anything completely.
The weather was extremely bad, making it hard for people to keep their spirits up. Inside the post office, each window had a line of at least a dozen people. I was standing in one of the lines with all the other customers, when the door swung open. In came a boy, perhaps 12 years old, who got well through. He was selling copies of The Washington Post for ten cents each. There was nothing else for me to look at, so I watched him silently.
He went up to each person and offered a newspaper for sale. Person after person, line after line, no one would like to buy. Most people just ignored him. Obviously, no one was willing to do him a kindness. Finally, he came up to me. I told him that I didn’t need newspapers because my college reading room was always supplied with newspapers. He left me and went on to other people. Twenty minutes later, no one bought any of his newspapers, and I started to feel some sort of pain for him, so I searched my pocket and found a quarter.
I gestured for the boy to come over.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At that moment, people around me began to buy the boy’s newspaper.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I gestured for the boy to come over. Then I handed my quarter to him. He gave me fifteen cents in change, but I politely declined. Hesitating for a moment, he handed me another two copies of newspapers. I told him that I didn’t need them. He responded with a grateful smile. Realizing I was struggling to hear his words, he expressed his gratitude loudly, positioning himself close to my ear. All the people in the post office turned in my direction, and they all smiled. I could guess from the reaction of the surrounding people that the boy must have spread some thankful words.
Al that moment, people around me began to buy the boy’s newspapers. A moment later, all the newspapers the boy had were sold out, and he stood there with a look of surprise and joy. I had never imagined my simple action would make such a significant difference. My mood lifted and the boy made my day. He had no way to know what effect his shouted thanks would have on me - it changed my lonely Christmas into one of my finest. It dawned on me that sometimes the easiest way to reconnect with happiness can be as simple as doing someone a kindness.

Several technologies have been raised to fight against the issue of urban overheating including cool pavements and roof coatings.

13 What was Klaus Baader astonished by?
A. The limited food choices in concerts. B. The lack of availability of concert tickets.
C. The popularity of top singers and famous bands. D. The overall high expenses for attending concerts.
14 What does the example of the tour in Stockholm show?

I gestured for the boy to come over
