Get ready for the 2026 Graceful Envelope Contest-this year's theme is Courage and
Creativity. Please note that your submission includes two parts:the entry envelope and the carrier
envelope.
Requirements for the Carrier Envelope:We ask that all contest entry envelopes (<7x9
inches, with original artwork and calligraphy)be placed inside a plain carrier envelope(any size,
no external art)that is clearly marked on the front with the contest address (see below)and with
correct postage(邮资).
Stamps:The 2026 contest will continue to require at least one stamp on the contest entry
envelope (preferably one that integrates with the design),but it need not have the full correct
postage. For student entries mailed together by a teacher, postage on the contest entry envelope is
not required. However, integration of at least one stamp into the design does strengthen a
submission.
Information:
Write your name,address,email,contest division (Adult,Grades 9-12,Grades 5-8)and
Instagram account (if you wish, for winner publicity)on the back of the Entry Envelope
Incomplete information will cause disqualification.
Submission Evaluation
Deadline:All carrier envelopes must be submitted by May 31 or they will be disqualified.
Address:The Graceful Envelope Contest,P.O.Box 3688,Merrifield,VA 22116.
Judging Criteria:Entries are judged only on the FRONT based on the contest theme,
calligraphy,design,and stamp use.
Prizes:Winners receive certificates and online publication.
A Judge's Perspective
My advice to entrants is to think outside the box regarding the theme-
reject the most
obvious ideas!Really let yourself go in thinking of different approaches to the subject.I see each
entry envelope as a natural integration of three parts:solid lettering;creative design or
illustration;and stamps relating to the theme.
21.What can a carrier envelope be like?

For three decades,Camilleri,a Canadian fashion designer, had made a name for
herself dressing A-listers.Her beautiful,delicate styles from leather,to evening wear,to
custom outfits were featured on the covers of the hottest magazines.
But when Turnbull-a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible
accident left her disabled in 1983-approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes
to fit her body through the seasons,Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring
fashion to a completely under-served community."I had no idea that someone in a chair
had any different clothing needs than you or I,"says the designer."The world was my
market because nobody had ever done this before."In 2004 Camilleri opened a store
specially for people who use wheelchairs.
"Everything we do,the starting point is from a seated frame. So what happens when
you're sitting? What happens to the clothes?Where are they getting together?"Camilleri
explains."We really had to recreate the patterns to suit a seated frame."
Her custom creations have changed lives.Winkelaar has been in a wheelchair since a
car accident two weeks before his fourth birthday.Until he met Camilleri,he lacked
confidence in his appearance and was afraid of entering the clothing stores because he had
trouble finding trousers that fit properly.Salah has spastic cerebral palsy(痉挛性脑瘫).
She says clothing stores are always daunting places full of pieces out of reach.Salah says
she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance.Being able
to have access to fashionable functional clothing gives her a lot of dignity.
"Camilleri's pieces are now part of an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, and her
success in a new rare market has not gone unnoticed in the mainstream fashion world. She
is a truly brilliant technician. She puts fashion and confidence within reach of the disabled,"
Canadian television personality and fashion critic Jeanne Beker says.

In the animal kingdom, counting skills are known to help grab bigger meals or find safety
in group sizes. But clownfish may have uncovered another"value"in numbers:identification.
Despite their cute appearance,.clownfish are territorial and aggressive(富于攻击性的)
When they spot a member of their own species moving towards their place, they attack, biting
and throwing out unwelcome visitors. There are 28 different species of clownfish, however. So
how do they actually tell friends from enemies?
Depending on the species, clownfish can have anywhere from zero to three white stripes
()Previous research suggested the fish pay close attention to these markings. In a 2022
study, scientists found clownfish display more aggressive behavior (e.g.,running after or biting
others)toward fish with vertical stripes compared with those with horizontal stripes.
This time around, ecologist Hayashi and colleagues assumed the fish could actually count
those stripes. They placed 50 young,lab-raised common clownfish-which display the typical
orange pattern like "Nemo"(a clownfish with three stripes from the film Finding Nemo)-into
individual water tanks. Then, the researchers added other clownfish species, which had white
stripes ranging from 0 to 3 and were protected inside a see-through case,in the original
clownfish's territory and filmed their reaction. The "native"fish couldn't run after or bite the
newcomers, but they could still rush them and stare them down. And that's what happened when
the newcomers wore the same number of stripes as the resident clownfish.
They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species
with three white stripes. Those fish were run after and bitten 10 times more than those without
stripes.Attacks on those fish were two times more frequent than on single-striped ones, and 1.3
times more frequent than on double-striped ones.It turned out that the researchers'assumption
had solid evidence.
Even so,biologist Rhodes questions whether the animals are really counting or just
noticing more white coloration on the attacked fish."Maybe researchers could further clarify
clownfish's calculating capacity,"adds Rhodes."An experiment that goes beyond stripes could
help.Could these fish learn, for example,to prefer two squares to three squares?"
28.What new use of counting skills have clownfish demonstrated?
A.Building up a large group.
B.Making out potential threats.
C.Finding reliable food sources.D.Measuring the size of their territory
29.What did the 2022 study about clownfish focus on?
A.The way they defend their territory.
B.The diversity of their stripe patterns.
C.The impact of their aggression on other species.
D.The role of stripe patterns in their behavioral reaction.
30.Which of the following is a Nemo-like clownfish most likely to attack?
A.A three-striped fish.
B.A double-striped fish.
高三英语(共5页)

C.A fish with one stripe.
D.A fish without stripes.
31.What is the author's purpose in mentioning Rhodes in the last paragraph?

C.To show appreciation of clownfish's learning ability.
D.To support the researchers'findings about clownfish.

Having to find a toilet during long road trips is,now,no longer a pain as Chinese
electric vehicle engineers are prepared to roll out a fleet of cars featuring built-in toilets.
They're putting a little restroom in your vroom-vroom.
Seres,Chinese carmaker specializing in high-end electric vehicles (NEVs)and
intelligent technology, has been granted a patent for what it calls an"in-vehicle toilet"that
slides under a passenger's seat for mid-trip use.The feature is meant to "satisfy users'
toilet needs on long journeys, while camping or while staying in the car,"according to the
patent Seres filed with the China National Intellectual Property Administration.
And,as if the ability to relieve yourself while on the run isn't cool enough, the
carmakers reportedly plan to equip the loo (to appear with either the push of a
button or through voice-activated commands.To limit strong,unpleasant smells,the loo
comes with a fan and an exhaust pipe, implemented to channel smells out of the car.Waste
is collected in a tank that has to be emptied manually. The toilet also boasts a rotating
heating element that evaporates urine(蒸发尿液)and dries other waste. When not in use,
the toilet is hidden beneath the seat, making full use of the space inside a car without
requiring more room.
Seres, based in Chongqing, has not announced an official release of vehicles with the
onboard bathroom. It's unclear if cars boasting the luxurious toilets will ever, actually, hit
the Chinese electric vehicle market. It's a booming industry with innovators claiming to
pump out the trendiest, most futuristic frills(),including everything from the ability
to fly down NYC roadways at over 200 MPH to literally flying in the sky.
In-vehicle toilets,however,are much more rare,but not totally unprecedented.A 1954
car Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Limousine, featuring a passenger seat pot by Joseph J
Mascuch, sold for $150,000.The brainchild of the inventor from New Jersey makes it
possible for travelers in their luxurious rides to finalize deals from the inbuilt telephone
before taking a bottle from the gold-plated toilet-cum-champagne cooler under the seat
cushion.
Now that's taking a leak in luxury.
32.Why does Seres roll out cars with built-in toilets?
A.To match car telephones.
B.To beat other carmakers.
C.To promote intelligent technology.D.To meet users'toilet needs on trips.
33.Which aspects of in-vehicle toilet does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A.Price and market.
B.Origin and history.
C.Design and function.
D.Brand and competition.
34.Why is Joseph J Mascuch mentioned?
A.To promote his latest invention.
B.To explain how to make a car toilet.
C.To show his fame in the car industry.
D.To prove in-vehicle toilets are not novel.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Futuristic Frills:Built-in Toilets in EVs
B.Granted Patent:Groundbreaking revolution
C.Flying Vehicles:Amazing Traffic Innovation
D.Outdoor Travel:Convenient Camping Equipment

Nothing is worse than needing rain and then having a number of storms finally roll through
only to leave your yard full of standing water.Fortunately, the easiest way to manage such issue
in your yard is creating a rain garden.
36 They normally contain pollinator )-friendly native plants because they
have deeper roots than non-native decorative plants. So they are better able to absorb water
instead of allowing it to pool and sit on the surface.
Even if standing water isn't a problem, rain gardens offer other advantages.Because they
contain native plants, they provide habitats for important pollinators and attract more birds to
your yard.37 After a storm, runoff from your yard picks up rubbish and sometimes
chemical pollutants, carrying them downhill to the nearest waterway.A rain garden stops this
overflow by trapping the water and using soil and plant roots to purify it.38 This also
prevents flooding,as it keeps heavy rainwater from rushing into waterways all at once.
Then how to make your own rain garden?39 It's easiest to choose an area that's
already lower than the rest of your yard and tends to collect water. However, you'll also want to
make sure the rain garden is at least 10 feet from your house and away from any underground
facilities or tree roots.
Once you've found the perfect place,it's time to dig your garden and choose your plants.
It's a good idea to plant a mixture of different kinds of plants.Luckily, because they're full of
native plants, rain gardens don't need much care besides some weeding and watering during the
first year.40
A.To get started, select the right location.
B.All done, just relax and enjoy a better environment.
C.Many people love growing vegetables in their yards
D.The clean water then recharges groundwater supplies.
E.Rain gardens can also help protect local water systems.
F.Rain gardens are easy-care plots in low-lying yard areas
G.But remember to design one based on local rainfall conditions.

Asher loved spending time in his grandfather's garden.Every evening,he carefully
held the watering can as his grandfather showed him how to pour just the right amount on
each plant."These plants need us,Asher,"Grandpa often said."If we take care of them,
they will take care of us."
Asher loved plants. He loved their bright green leaves, the way they danced in the
wind, and how fresh they smelled after rain.Plants made him feel calm and safe. But when
it came to people,Asher was not so confident. At school,he was one of the quietest kids.
While others laughed and played loudly,he often sat alone, unsure how to join them.
One afternoon during break,Asher walked past the big oak tree (near the
playground.A group of kids stood nearby, pulling leaves from its lower branches and
throwing them into the air."Look!Leaf rain!"one of them shouted, laughing.
Asher's chest tightened. He loved trees. He knew that leaves helped trees breathe and
grow.He wanted to say something, but fear held him back. What if they laughed at him?
What if they ignored him? After a moment,he turned away and walked back to the
classroom without saying a word.
That evening,Asher sat in the garden with his grandfather, watering the plants as
usual, but his mind was not at peace. His silence did not escape Grandpa. After a while,
Asher shared what had happened at school and how he felt.He explained that he wanted to
protect the tree but did not feel brave enough.
His grandfather listened carefully. He told Asher that courage does not mean being
fearless. It means doing what is right, even when fear is present. He reminded Asher that
change often begins with one small voice and one brave choice. Those words stayed in
Asher's mind all night.

Ranking My Career Choice Essentials
Choosing a proper career counts as a life-altering decision for youngsters.I rank
my core career priorities from the most to the least important:interest and passion,
salary and self-development,social recognition and expectations.
My top priority is interest and passion.Genuine interest fuels perseverance amid
hardships, bringing priceless spiritual satisfaction.Jobs without passion will
eventually turn dull.Next comes salary and self-development:salary covers my daily
necessities, while self-development equips me with lasting competitiveness against
ongoing industrial updates.I put social recognition and expectations in third place, for
earning public respect and meeting societal standards serve as powerful motivation.
Overall,I value inner satisfaction and future progress above immediate material
benefits in career selection.

The next day during break,Asher saw the same kids pulling leaves just like before.
This time,he didn't walk away.His heart pounded,but Grandpa's words echoed in his
mind:courage means doing what is right even when you are afraid.Taking a shaky
breath,Asher stepped forward."Hey,"he said,his voice barely above a whisper.
"Please stop."The kids turned,surprised."Leaves help trees breathe,"Asher
continued, trying to sound calm."If you pull them all off,the tree could get sick and
die."For a long moment, nobody spoke. Then one boy dropped the leaf in his hand.
"Really?"he asked."I never thought about that."Asher nodded,feeling a small wave
of confidence.“Instead of hurting it,,”he suggested,.“we could protect it together.”
The kids soon agreed to Asher's suggestion. They fetched cardboard and bright
markers from the classroom and made a large sign that read,"Protect Our Tree-It
Gives Us Shade and Clean Air."Together, they tied it to the oak tree.Over the next
few weeks, the group took turns watering the tree and picking up litter around it.
Asher no longer sat alone during break. He stood and laughed with his new friends
under the spreading branches. One afternoon,Grandpa came to pick him up and saw
the sign. His eyes shone with pride."You see,Asher?"he said quietly."You took care
of the tree, and the tree brought you friends."Asher smiled, feeling the warm sun and
an even warmer sense of belonging. He finally understood:when we take care of
plants, they take care of us in ways we never expect.

W:Everyone should make the change to electric. It would save the planet! And
they're so affordable now.
M:But there aren't nearly enough public chargers available. And not everyone
has the room or the money for a private one.Personally,I think public transport is a
better solution.
W:Why?There's never a bus when you need it,and the trains are always late.
M:I agree. But that's why we should invest in improvements. It would benefit
everyone, including drivers, not least because there would be fewer cars on the road.
W:Yeah,I see your point.Maybe the answer is a mix of both.

W:The other option is to catch the 4:42 train. It's more expensive, but it also
doesn't stop at every single station on the way. What do you think?
M:Can you say that again?Sorry,I can hardly keep my eyes open today.
W:Were you out partying last night?
M:No,my friend's going through a bad time, and I was on the phone with him
until 3:00 a.m.
W:Oh,Jamie! You need to look after yourself.
M:It's fine! What do they say??“I can catch up on sleep later!”
W:But staying up so late is really bad for your health.Lack of sleep can cause
serious problems.
M:Oh,come on.I'm only twenty-three.
W:So?Twelve years ago,my sister ended up in hospital with heart problems
caused by stress and a long-term lack of sleep.
M:Gosh…Really?
W:Yes,and she was thirty-five at the time.Bad habits add up,and poor sleep can
have long-term effects on your heart, brain, and mental health.
M:Wow,okay.Point taken!I'll start taking it more seriously.

M:Helen, have you seen the noticeboard today?
W:No,I haven't gone past it.Is there something new?
M:Yes!The school is organizing a science fair next month. All students are
invited to submit a project to display their talents and creativity
W:Sounds interesting.I could enter my new musical robot.
M:Can it sing?
W:No,but it can use the drum to reproduce any song once it has heard it.
M:How did you manage that?
W:I used an AI to analyze the song.It can not only copy the pattern, but adapt it
as well.Or at least,I hope it will.I'm still working on it.
M:I think you have a good chance of winning the top prize.
W:Thank you.What are the prizes?
M:First place wins a brand new computer.Second and third get a year's
membership to the science museum.
W:I could really use a new computer.Mine keeps crashing when I do complex
programming on it.
M:Well,if you're lucky,you'll win a shiny new one.
W:Luck has nothing to do with it.This requires round-the-clock design and
operation. In fact,I should go home to start on it right now. Thanks for letting me
know.

Good morning, everyone.Your generation finds itself in an interesting situation.
Right now, you're studying for an exam that will hopefully get you into college and
prepare you for a successful career. At the same time, you're watching the world of
work changing and rebuilding itself before your eyes. With thousands of jobs already
lost to AI and robots, how can you ensure that the path you choose won't lead you to
a "dead end"?The answer lies in developing skills that machines cannot easily
replace.
For example, computers can process information quickly, but they still struggle
with creative solutions and complex decision-making.People who can think
independently to find solutions and bring fresh ideas will always be most valued by
employers.
Secondly,no matter how advanced technology becomes, businesses will still need
people who can work well with others, share ideas positively, and build relationships
with a variety of people. Also thanks to working from home, many of us are already
working with people from different backgrounds. So language skills, mental
flexibility, and cultural awareness are becoming more and more important.
Of course, the careers of today may not even exist tomorrow. So,be open to
change and to learning new things,as this is the only way to keep pace in such a
fast-moving world.
