Scott had just graduated when a job posted on a Harvard mailing list caught her eye: two students had an idea for a company offering on-demand household services. They needed a chief technical officer to design the website and app. Scott joined their company, offered novel ideas and helped it grow to the point where it runs in 28 major U.S. cities, plus more in Canada. “I wanted to make my own money,” Scott said. While still in high school, Scott co-founded a multifunctional network service platform. She sold it to a software company before her freshman year at Harvard.
Scott was interested in entrepreneurship while still in high school. Her father, a businessman, sowed the seeds of entrepreneurship in her mind, while her elementary school teacher introduced her to coding. It wasn’t long before those enthusiasms joined each other.
Always planning to study computer science, Scott chose the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Attending Harvard realized a dream she and her father had shared. Even as she was studying computer science, she was gaining other skills that would pay off in her career as an entrepreneur. “Harvard encourages a multidisciplinary approach to education and comprehensive abilities, which can be beneficial and necessary for entrepreneurs who often need to deal with various aspects of business,” she said.
By day, she does coding at a big company. She’s also become an investor in other small businesses. “When I invest in a startup, I’m looking for a passionate team with an innovative idea that addresses a clear market need,” she said.
It’s been a while since Scott co-founded a company of her own, but that doesn’t mean she’s done with that part of her life. She makes the most of every business experience to acquire new skills. For her, each experience is an opportunity to study. When the next company opportunity presents itself, she’ll just be that much more ready with what she’s gained and gain new insights from it.
24. Which of the following can best describe Scott according to paragraph 1?
A. Strong-willed and outgoing. B. Creative and ambitious.
C. Cooperative and generous. D. Hard-working and independent.
25. What is the function of paragraph 2?
A. To demonstrate Scott’s talents.
B. To describe Scott’s background.
C. To show the sources of Scott’s interests.
D. To reveal the reason for Scott’s success.
26. How does Harvard’s education influence Scott?
A. It inspires her to be an investor.
B. It fires her passion for computers.
C. It equips her with many business skills.
D. It offers her an entrepreneurial platform.
27. What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A. There is no end to learning. B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Good things come to those who wait. D. To be prepared is half the victory.

Grass-powered gas is set to heat thousands of homes for the first time in the coming weeks. Energy firm Ecotricity is expected to begin supplying gas to 5,300 homes from its plant near Reading through the distribution company Southern Gas Networks in April. Research has estimated that the gas can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) release by nearly 90 percent. It is hoped that the plan can be expanded to supply fuel to more homes around the country.
The £11 million plant uses bacteria to break down grasses and herbs, which absorb CO2 while growing, in certain containers. This produces biogas which is then upgraded to biomethane (生物甲烷) for use in the gas network. An organic fertiliser, which is intended to help grow more grass, is also produced.
Ecotricity owner Dale Vince hopes to expand across the country, building plants which reduce the use of conventional fuels while avoiding damage to the environment, and boost energy security.
Green gas has previously been made from food waste or “high-energy” crops such as corn, but both face sustainability issues and problems with a lack of size. “Our mix of grass and herbs makes carbon neutral gas, pulling carbon out of the atmosphere,” said Mr. Vince. “It’s a cycle of carbon rather than net zero release.”
Asked about Ecotricity’s biomethane project, a Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
spokesman said: “Initiatives like this show how the UK is leading in the development of innovations in green technologies that can help increase our energy security, tackle climate change and bring down people’s bills.”
A spokesman for Southern Gas Networks said: “We’ve partnered with Ecotricity to deliver the biomethane to a project at a site in Farley Hill near Reading. The project will supply 5,300 nearby properties with renewable green gas for heat and power, helping to reduce each household’s annual carbon release by about 2.2 tonnes.”
28. What is the feature of the gas from Ecotricity’s plant?
A. It is cost-effective. B. It is eco-friendly.
C. It is free of carbon. D. It is easy to produce.
29. Which aspect of the plant is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?
A. Its financial state. B. Its expected outcome.
C. Its technical process. D. Its breakdown system.
30. What is the disadvantage of previous green gas?
A. Insufficient security.
B. Dependence on old fuels.
C. Contribution to food waste.
D. Unsustainable development.
31. Why are the spokesmen’s words cited in the last two paragraphs?
A. To prove the project’s success.
B. To emphasize the broad support.
C. To explain the project’s potential.
D. To discuss environmental benefits.
D
Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic? If you’re the former, somebody’s probably told you at some point that you’re a left-brained person, and if you’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person?
If there’s no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.
When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial. After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical”? The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves.
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. A free-spirited artist is a right-handed person.
B. The left half of the brain deals with analytical work.
C. Different personalities are determined by the brain.
D. The idea of which half of the brain is dominant is a fiction.
33. Which is a possible reason for people believing left-brained or right-brained dominance?
A. The tendency to classify people. B. Distinctions between different people.
C. Roles of different brain regions. D. The conclusion from daily phenomena.
34. What does the underlined word “congenial” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Reasonable. B. Accurate. C. Random. D. Pleasing.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Science of Different Personalities
B. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance
C. Links Between the Brain and Characters
D. Ways to Tell Right-brained and Left-brained People

I clicked the blue link: Sign up here. This would be my first half-marathon. As demanding as running 13.1 miles seemed, I was going to do it.
I signed up for a training group online, a group of strangers with whom I would spend a few months virtually preparing for the race, and then I was directed to sign up for the actual race. I imagined a course somewhere in sunny Florida or California.
My jaw dropped when the race website opened, and I was greeted with the words “Zion at night, half-marathon in the darkness.” In mountainous Zion in the dark? No. Was it too late to quit? But I’d signed up for a coaching group that was meant to “motivate me through running”. I looked through photos of the race. My heart sank. Runners kitted out with headlamps and rocks on trails filled the computer screen. I cannot do this, I thought. I don’t run on trails or up hills; I’m also afraid of darkness and heights.
A text came through. It was Nicole, our training group’s fearless leader, who has run hundred-mile marathons. “Sign up for the 4 am start time,” she wrote. As I filled in my name and address, I tried to figure out how likely I was to get injured during training. Realistically, that was my best way to get out of this race. I filled out the form and started worrying.
At our first online meeting, four other teammates turned up. Nicole told us how beautiful the course was and discussed running toward the cliffs (悬崖) as the sun rose. And I nodded along, smiling, wondering how I could possibly overcome my fear of flying to get to another state to join the marathon and of trails, animals and the dark to run this race. Anyhow, I made a training plan for my run with Nicole’s help and encouragement.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Para1. The week before the race, I was more anxious.
Para2. I walked to the start line with my teammates on the morning of the race.

Last Saturday, our class organized an uplifting practical activity in labor education on a local farm, whose theme was “Experience Farming Culture, Cultivate Labor Spirit”.
During the activity, we experienced traditional farming culture firsthand. We engaged in various activities such as planting crops, harvesting vegetables and feeding farm animals. Under the guidance of the farmers and teachers, we learned about agricultural processes and the tremendous hard work that goes into farming.
This hands-on experience was incredibly rewarding. It deepened not only my respect for agricultural work but my understanding of the value of labor. Moreover, it taught me practical skills and the importance of teamwork.
续写
Paragraph 1:
The week before the race, I was more anxious. I found myself wishing I would catch a cold to keep me from the run. But the week came and went. The run just two days away, I received Nicole’s text which read “It’s okay. Maybe you’ll be surprised.” Finally, I found the courage to set out. When I landed and met my teammates, I felt some easy. Nicole’s encouragement to us was contagious. After a long chat and dinner, Nicole directed us to the hotel to get a good night’s rest.
Paragraph 2:
I walked to the start line with my teammates on the morning of the race. We started together, but I fell behind quickly. I couldn’t see clearly. In company with Nicole, I ran along the stretch to the mountain trail. My nerves were calmed by the silence and dark. As I neared the end of the stretch, the sun began to rise. I looked from afar, balancing my fear of heights and my desire to see. As I traversed the first of many of these rocks, I was overcome by an emotion: joy.
