In those distant days, almost everyone, Indian or European, kept a pet parrot or parakeet. After many repetitions by whichever member of the household had taken on the task of teaching the bird to talk, verbal expressions were picked up by the parrot over a period of time. But our parrot refused to talk.
“You are no beauty! Can’t talk, can’t dance!” With these words, Aunt Ruby would tease (取笑) the unfortunate parakeet who stared sourly at everyone from his ornamental cage. Neither granny nor grandfather were keen on keeping caged birds as pets, but Aunt Ruby showed signs of losing temper if she did not get her way.
One afternoon, while everyone was indoors enjoying a short nap, I gave the parrot his lunch and then purposely left the cage door open. Seconds later, the bird was winging its way into the freedom of the mango orchard. At the same time, grandfather came and remarked, “I see your Aunt’s parrot has escaped.” “The door was quite loose.” I said with a shrug.
I thought we’d never see the parrot again, but a few days later, I found the bird sitting on the railing, looking expectantly at me. Then, Aunt Ruby emerged from her room, and with a cry of surprise, called out, “Look! There’s my parrot! Come back! He must have missed me!” With a loud sound, the parrot flew out of her reach and staying on the nearest rose bush, glared at Aunt Ruby and screamed at her in my Aunt’s familiar tones: “You’re no beauty! Can’t talk, can’t sing, can’t dance!” Aunt Ruby went ruby-red and dashed indoors. The parrot had learnt to talk after all.
4. What best describes Aunt Ruby’s personality?
A. Warm-hearted. B. Narrow-minded.
C Self-centered. D. Even-tempered.
5. Which is the possible reason why the parrot can’t speak?
A. The family’s loss of care and training. B. The parrot’s mere experience of freedom.
C. The parrot’s lack of practice and repetition. D. Aunt Ruby’s teasing and negative attitude.
6. What can be inferred from the passage?
A Indian or European kept a pet parrot to teach the bird to speak.
B. Environment is as important for animals’ learning as for humans.
C. Aunt Ruby’s family were supportive of keeping the parrot as pets.
D. The caged parrot flew away because the cage door was quite loose.
7. What is the tone of the passage?
A. Ironical (嘲讽). B. Critical. C. Delightful. D. Hopeful.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. A

People from different backgrounds working together at big companies often have trouble understanding each other’s cultures when they talk, whether in person or online. Just making your point clear isn’t enough. You have to truly understand cross-cultural communication for efficient cooperation and business success.
Often referred to as intercultural communication, cross-cultural communication is the study of how verbal and nonverbal communication takes place among individuals from different backgrounds, geographies, and cultures.
Since cross-cultural communication is how people belonging to different cultures communicate with each other, there are bound to be conflicts between different cultures. One way to reduce these conflicts is strengthening diversity when hiring. When people from differing cultures work toward a common goal, the risk of offensive misunderstandings decreases, and the quality of work increases.
Companies with multicultural environments must focus on cross-cultural communication skills to create a positive work culture. With thoughtful cross-cultural communication, you can remove miscommunication and build strong relationships with people from different backgrounds. This multicultural communication enables every stakeholder to benefit from the free exchange of information. Strong intercultural communication can also help companies find opportunities and promote business growth. For example, employees from diverse cultural backgrounds and age groups can share unique insights about their generations’ consumer behavior, preferences, and habits. Their understanding of the target market can help you fuel business growth across markets.
The first and most commonly forgotten step in becoming culturally aware is to reflect on your own culture. In order to learn about others, you must first know about yourself. Perform a self-evaluation and consider the culture with which you identify, what aspects of that particular culture are connected with you, and what style of communication your culture has lent you. Reflecting upon your own culture will help you embrace cultural differences with an open mind. When surrounded by like-minded people, it’s easy to forget that what you do and how you act are not the universal norm. That’s why looking at yourself critically will improve your cultural awareness, thus promoting effective intercultural communication.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By making a comparison. B. By describing a phenomenon.
C. By telling causes and effects. D. By giving an assumption.
9. What is a useful method to cut down conflicts and misunderstandings?
A. Employers hire people from different age groups.
B. Employees try to create a positive work culture.
C. Employers set achievable goals for employees.
D. Employees from various cultures cooperate.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. The significance of intercultural communication.
B. The methods companies use to improve harmony.
C. The understanding of multicultural environment.
D. The present situation global companies encounter.
11. What might the author continue talking about?
A. The importance of reflecting on your own culture.
B. The value of realizing and accepting cultural shocks.
C. Other tips for effective cross-cultural communication.
D More examples of successful intercultural cooperation.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Companies with multicultural environments must focus on cross-cultural communication skills to create a positive work culture. With thoughtful cross-cultural communication, you can remove miscommunication and build strong relationships with people from different backgrounds. This multicultural communication enables every stakeholder to benefit from the free exchange of information. “Mathematical symbolism and metaphor (隐喻) are present in every kind of literature, from fairy tales to War and Peace,” says mathematician Sarah Hart. In Once Upon a Prime, she lays bare some of this hidden math and meaning in a host of poetry, novels and legends.
She starts with nursery rhymes, often full of counting — such as One, Two, Buckle My Shoe — showing how numbers go into our very first encounters with the world of words. This is not just through counting but also through the rhythms and rhyme patterns. It’s also through trebling — where a word or phrase is repeated three times, such as “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”.
The number three is everywhere in common expressions — “Ready, Set, Go!” or “Learning your ABCs.” It’s also central to story structure. Characters tend to come in threes, too, like The Three Little Pigs, and even in jokes.
Hart suggests this emphasis on three has some basis in geometry. Three is the smallest number of sticks that can make a triangle. Therefore the number three is given “a sense of strength and completeness,” Hart writes.
For a book about math and literature, it’s not surprising that Hart focuses quite a bit on poetry, which is often defined by patterns of some sort. Perhaps more meaningful is her look at how math also creates the structure of novels.
Some readers may wonder if Hart’s love of math simply leads her to find these patterns in literature. But the chances must be extremely high for the examples she presents to be only chance.
Hart’s simple breakdowns of both math and literature make the book easy for anyone to follow, no matter their proficiency in either subject. Not everyone will finish the book and discover the mathematical treasures hidden in a book or poem. But that takes little away from the pleasure of reading it.
12. What does the underlined phrase “lays bare” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Picks. B. Creates. C. Uncovers. D. Receives.
13. How does Sarah Hart support her opinions in her book?
A. By referring to a subject. B. By drawing comparisons.
C. By providing examples. D. By using experts’ words.
14. What is a feature of Once Upon a Prime according to the text?
A. It highlights the charm of poetry. B. It focuses on the origin of geometry.
C. It explains a difficult mathematical theory. D. It reveals the mathematical impact on novels.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Glimpse into Mathematics B. The Hidden Math in Literature
C. Strength and Completeness of Numbers D. Mathematical Symbolism and Metaphor
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据前文“‘Mathematical symbolism and metaphor (隐喻) are present in every kind of literature, from fairy tales to War and Peace,’ says mathematician Sarah Hart.(数学家莎拉·哈特说:“从童话到《战争与和平》,各种文学作品中都存在着数学象征和隐喻)”可知,莎拉·哈特认为文学作品中都存在着数学象征和隐喻,所以划线词所在句“In Once Upon a Prime, she lays bare some of this hidden math and meaning in a host of poetry, novels and legends.(在《昔日盛世》一书中,她lays bare许多诗歌、小说和传说中隐藏的数学和意义)”是指,莎拉·哈特在她作品《昔日盛世》揭示了诗歌、小说和传说中隐藏的数学和意义。划线短语lays bare有“揭露、揭示”之意,与“Uncovers”意思相近。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“She starts with nursery rhymes, often full of counting — such as One, Two, Buckle My Shoe — showing how numbers go into our very first encounters with the world of words.(她从童谣开始讲起,童谣里常常充满了数数的内容,比如《一二,系好鞋带》,展示了数字是如何融入我们最初接触的文字世界的)”,第三段中“The number three is everywhere in common expressions — ‘Ready, Set, Go!’ or ‘Learning your ABCs.’ It’s also central to story structure. Characters tend to come in threes, too, like The Three Little Pigs, and even in jokes.(数字三在常见表达中无处不在——“预备,开始!”或者“学习你的ABC”。它也是故事结构的核心。角色也往往以三个为一组出现,比如《三只小猪》,甚至在笑话里也是如此)”等内容可知,莎拉·哈特在书中通过列举童谣、常见表达、故事等例子来支持她的观点。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Perhaps more meaningful is her look at how math also creates the structure of novels.(也许更有意义的是,她研究了数学是如何构建小说结构的)”可知,《昔日盛世》这本书揭示了数学对小说的影响。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“‘Mathematical symbolism and metaphor (隐喻) are present in every kind of literature, from fairy tales to War and Peace,’ says mathematician Sarah Hart. In Once Upon a Prime, she lays bare some of this hidden math and meaning in a host of poetry, novels and legends.(数学家莎拉·哈特说:“从童话到《战争与和平》,各种文学作品中都存在着数学象征和隐喻。”在《昔日盛世》一书中,她揭示了许多诗歌、小说和传说中隐藏的数学和意义)”可知,本文主要介绍了数学家莎拉·哈特在她的著作《从前有个质数》中揭示了诗歌、小说和传说等文学作品中隐藏的数学元素和意义。所以B项“The Hidden Math in Literature(文学中隐藏的数学)”最适合作为文章标题。故选B项。

Love Is The Great Miracle Cure
I know he has arrived before I ever see him. Heads turn in his direction, and if he stops for just a minute, he draws a crowd. He walks through the halls with a swagger that is saved for the truly confident.
His name is Augie. He is a six-year-old Goldendoodle with a strawberry — blond coat that is made for petting, and his manners are perfect. He is a trained therapy (治疗) dog who visit patients in the hospital where I work as a nurse in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I have seen Augie come through the hospital, stopping for anyone who wants to pet him, and I have seen him go into patients’ rooms. But I had never witnessed Augie providing the therapy that he was trained to give until I saw him with Mr. Smith.
Mr. Smith had been in ICU (重症监护室) for many weeks and endured many medical complications (并发症). His wife rarely left his side. Family and former colleagues visited, and I quickly learnt that, in his younger years, Mr. Smith had been a force. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Smith had worked as a police officer who was in charge of the training of police dogs and developed strong bonds with his four-legged partners. Sadly, Mr. Smith had been attending a training program for police dogs when he fell ill.
Although he was awake, there was little indication that he was aware of his surroundings. Mrs. Smith kept talking to him while she exercised his arms, hoping he would make some effort to move them himself. I watched Mrs. Smith work with her husband’s hands, opening and closing them. She told him gently that he needed to move his hands so that he would not lose the use of them, but he did not seem to be able to do it. He moved his eyes to look at her when she spoke to him, but he didn’t, or couldn’t, move his head toward her voice. His bright eyes seemed to shout, I’m in here! I’m trying. When Augie was brought to the door, it was as if he knew he had to make this visit.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Augie sat at the doorway, his eyes fixed on Mr. Smith until he was invited in.

With tears in my eyes, I looked over at Mrs. Smith.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Augie sat at the doorway, his eyes fixed on Mr. Smith until he was invited in. As soon as he was allowed to enter, Augie trotted over to Mr. Smith’s bedside, his tail wagging gently. Mr. Smith’s eyes lit up with recognition. Augie climbed onto the bed and placed his head in Mr. Smith’s lap, as if offering comfort and strength. Mr. Smith’s fingers, which had been so still, began to stroke Augie’s soft fur, and a faint smile played on his lips. It was as if a bridge had been built between two souls that had known each other in a different life. I was touched by this scene.
With tears in my eyes, I looked over at Mrs. Smith. She placed a hand over her mouth, trying to stifle a sob as she witnessed the magical connection between her husband and Augie. The room seemed to hum with an unspoken understanding, a testament to the power of love and companionship. In that moment, I realized that Augie was not just a therapy dog; he was a beacon of hope, bringing light to the darkest corners of people’s lives. And as I watched Mr. Smith and Augie together, I knew that love was indeed the great miracle cure.

C. Self-centered.
A. Indian or European kept a pet parrot to teach the bird to speak.
B. Environment is as important for animals’ learning as for humans.
C. Aunt Ruby’s family were supportive of keeping the parrot as pets.
D. The caged parrot flew away because the cage door was quite loose.
7. What is the tone of the passage?
A. Ironical (嘲讽). B. Critical. C. Delightful. D. Hopeful.

A. Picks. B. Creates. C. Uncovers. D. Receives.

注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Augie sat at the doorway, his eyes fixed on Mr. Smith until he was invited in.
