I’m in trouble.
Last week, we had a football match, and we lost. We played well, but one teammate didn’t do his best, I think. It was like he wasn’t even on the court! Disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend. But he told everyone else what I’d said. I’m really angry with my friend-what should I say to him? And should I say anything at all to my teammate?

There is an old American saying, “Loose lips sink ships.” This means that if you speak too much about something, especially to people who you don’t know so well, it’ll cause all kinds of trouble. Maybe now you’re in this situation. Forget all these unhappy things.

Perhaps most importantly, think about your own behaviour. When filled with anger, you would say whatever comes to your mind. You might hurt others. Take a deep breath, calm down, and always remember: think first, speak later.

Here’s what you need to do. First, apologise to your teammate. Have a chat with him, and tell him directly and honestly that you were talking without thinking. Then tell your friend you’re angry with him for repeating what you said and making the situation worse, but you hope your friendship will move on.

Do all vegetables need lots of sunshine?
Mark Hoffmann and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse and they often serve their guests fresh food from the garden. They have been growing food and flowers for over twenty years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffmann has been experimenting and working with shade (阴凉) planting. He says, “As is known to all, most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, here is a new way. ”
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffmann says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct sunshine, especially the morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients (营养素) and water.
Mr. Hoffman says only plants with wider leaves do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun. Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem, so Mr. Hoffmann does not have to use pesticides. He planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get the morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part of the day is when they do the worst of their damage to the plants.
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings — these all influence how much sunlight falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “shade” can be different amounts of darkness and different things in different places.
29. The underlined word “pesticides” probably means chemicals that can ________.
A. offer light B. avoid light C. kill insects D. feed insects
30. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To show the process of shade planting.

“My name is Kelly. I’m from Canada. Where are you from?” she said as she waved to me. “China,” I said as I shook her hand.

Reply

Mark Hoffmann and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse, and they often serve their guests fresh food from the garden.
B. To explain the reasons for shade planting.
C. To introduce an unusual way of planting.
D. To give advice on different kinds of planting.
31. We may read the passage in a magazine on ________.

When a woman took the seat beside me on a plane, I felt uncomfortable. Because of her size, she had to lower herself slowly, trying her best to fit into the small space.
“My name is Kelly. I’m from Canada. Where are you from?” she said as she waved to me. “China,” I said as I shook her hand.
Kelly kept talking with me. She was thoughtful. When we were served drinks and meals, she made sure that I had enough room in my seat.
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable with my elephant size!” she said sincerely. I couldn’t help but let down my guard.
As we talked I was surprised by what she said. She had read many books and was very smart. I asked her if she ever thought about losing some weight.
“Aren’t you worried about the diseases that come with being overweight?”
“Not at all. I eat healthily and walk regularly,” she said. “I believe in my heart, the people who get diseases are the ones who worry. You see advertisements from exercise centers that read, ‘Free yourself from your extra baggage, so you are free to be yourself.’ You’re free only if you’re comfortable with who you are!”
I suddenly realized that Kelly was the most beautiful and clever woman I had ever met in my life.
