Last summer, the Chinese actress Huo Siyan posted a video online. She shared how she discovered an injured dog by the roadside. It turned out that the poor dog had come from a lab. She took it home and named it Pearl. The story has drawn public attention to animals used in lab testing.
Animals have long played an important role in scientific studies. In the 1880s, Louls Pasteur tested on sheep and showed the world that some illnesses are caused by germs (细菌). In the 1970s, treatments for a serious skin disease were used on animals before being given to humans. In 1974, Rudolf Jaenisch put DNA from a virus into mice. Genetic (基因的) study grew quickly after that.
Today, animal testing is required for many products. From medicines to cosmetics (化妆品), new chemicals are often tested on animals first. Some tests even require the animal to die. It is said that over 115 million animals like mice, rabbits, dogs are used in experiments every year.
Back in the 17th century, people had different opinions about animal testing. Many people disliked it. They believed that animals should not be harmed (伤害). In recent years, more and more people are saying “no” to animal research. In some countries, testing of certain products on animals is not allowed. Scientists have been working to offer non-animal methods. For example, they have created 3D chips (芯片) from human cells to find out how human systems respond to drugs (药物反应). Researchers also make use of computer models that can predict how a medicine might affect us. These methods are faster and cheaper than animal testing.
Old habits die hard. But non-animal methods will one day replace experiments on animals. This will be a good thing not just for animals, but for human health in general.
27. Why does the author mention Huo Siyan’s story in Paragraph 1?
A. To provide an example. B. To lead in the topic. C. To support his argument.
28. According to the text, which of the following statement is NOT true?
A. Animal testing has a history of more than 100 years.
B. Animal testing is still often used in scientific studies nowadays.
C. Non-animal methods are not good for human health in general.
29. How many non-animal methods are mentioned in the text?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four.
30 What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.

These days, DeepSeek has received a lot of attention on the Internet. So what is DeepSeek? It’s a Chinese AI company founded by a man called Liang Wenfeng on July 17, 2023. The team of researchers have studied in the top universities in China and have no oversea (海外的) educational background, and most of whom are under 34 years old. They are also very good at math, physics and coding (编程). The company works on AI, especially big models (模型). Think of it like building a super smart brain that can think and solve problems like humans (this is called AGI).

This made the whole world completely surprised, because it costs much less to build. It only took the team $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and 2,048 computer chips, and two months to create it. This shows that good ideas can beat big money. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers around the world started projects to study it. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
As a DeepSeek engineer said “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China tells the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

B. Animal testing is still often used in scientific studies nowadays.

On January 20, 2025, DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. It can help people find information and summarize (总结) it, solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT-40.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China tells the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
