One of my earliest memories is playing “shops” with my granddad when I was 5 years old. After 11 school at 15, I worked in a fruit shop, but I had no 12 of how to run my own shop back then.
Several years later, I got married. My husband Eric and I heard about a shop for sale in the nearby village. We had a look and decided to have a shop of our own. That was January 1973. Shopkeeping was 13 to us, so we often didn’t know what the 14 were asking for. But we soon learned.
We can tell by the weather how 15 the shop is going to be. On wet days there are very few people around, and when it’s 16 people want bread and milk, as they’re worried about being snowed in. When it’s hot, everyone buys cold drinks and ice cream.
More people shop online nowadays, but they still come here for things 17 from their order. I’ve kept up with technology and have a card reader, but the shop itself hasn’t changed much.
Now, as I’m getting older, it’s open from 7 a. m. to 6 p. m. on weekdays 18 closing at 8: 30 p. m. However, I keep it open until 2 p. m. at weekends.
Eric passed away 16 years ago, but I am 19 getting rid of (处理掉) the shop. I love it all—talking to the customers and getting 20 they want. There are customers who come in two or three times a day, and we see several generations of families. Customers often tell me their 21 and I offer advice if I can.
It was the 50th anniversary (周年纪念) of the shop on January 13 this year. I wanted to do something 22 , so I held a party and had drinks and nibbles with customers. I also 23 a book about my memories in the shop. It’s called Just Ask Jenny, as I’m always the first port of call when anyone wants to know 24 .
This shop has been my life. I never 25 I’d still be here after 50 years, but I love it and the people. It’s what keeps me going, and I’ve got no plan of retiring (退休).

Do you compare yourself to other people? Perhaps your best friend received something you really wanted for your birthday, or you’re not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is. Even though comparisons are normal and can sometimes be helpful, focusing on your own progress is important for your happiness.
Why does focusing on me matter? “We prefer to compare ourselves to others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves,” says psychologist (心理学家) Nicola Abbott. “But comparing your achievements to your past self (where you started) and your future self (where you’d like to get to) can be more positive (积极的) .” This can make you feel proud of what you’ve achieved and excited about what you might do. Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus agrees and says that focusing on your own goals is more worthwhile than always trying to come out on top.
Do comparisons make you unhappy? Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realizing. It can help us to find our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However, it’s important to be realistic (务实的) and remember that nobody is perfect, especially online and on social media. Taking notes of how the comparison is making you feel matters, too.
If you begin to feel quite low, Abbott suggests choosing a different role model or focusing on your own strengths and what you’re good at. Antrobus agrees. She says that asking yourself questions like “What am I good at?” “What do I feel proud of?” and “What improvements can I notice?” can help to improve your self-esteem (how positive you feel about yourself).
“Jealousy (忌妒) is an ordinary feeling,” says Antrobus, “but focusing on improving your own performance can help you feel just as successful. Besides, learning to celebrate your friend’s achievements can help not only to improve your friend’s feeling but can also help you feel good.”
“It will encourage you to build each other up.”

Since I grew up in England with a British father and a Chinese mother, I’ve enjoyed food from both countries ever since I was able to hold a knife and fork—and chopsticks!
Mum has sweet memories of the food from her hometown in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. Because of this, Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. He once told me he was surprised by what he saw on the table when he first visited my mother’s parents in China. He was even shocked (震惊的) at their wedding when he saw how the Chinese ate almost every part of an animal. Even today, he still does not easily take (忍受) to eating things like chicken feet.
But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week, I went to the butcher’s and asked, “Do you have pigs’ ears?” “No,” the butcher (屠夫) said, pulling at his own cars, “just these ordinary ones.” He must have thought I was joking.
Dad can cook a super “full English breakfast” of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter. Mum and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables, but Mum says we’d better not cat too much roast food as it may make us suffer from heat inside our bodies, according to traditional Chinese medicine.
I’ll never forget my visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food, and I did! I loved everything. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I came across stinky tofu, a terrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe. “You needn’t try it if you don’t want to,” Mum said, but I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn’t that bad. It reminded me of blue cheese, a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I’ll fall in love with stinky tofu someday.
People say that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, but I feel at home with different food from both China and Britain. To me, there’s nothing better than a cross-cultural afternoon tea of English biscuits and a cup of Chinese oolong tea in a fine china cup!
33.What do you know about the writer’s taste for food?
A.He prefers British food to Chinese food.
B.He will never get used to Chinese oolong tea.
C.He enjoys British food as well as Chinese food.
D.He can deal with all Chinese food including stinky tofu.
34.What can we infer (推断) from the paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.Almost no people in England eat pigs’ ears.
B.The writer just wanted to play a trick on the butcher.
C.The butcher was more interested in pigs’ ears than others.
D.Pigs’ ears are popular in Britain, especially at their weddings.
35.What do you know about the writer’s father?
A.He isn’t really interested in cooking.
B.He likes easily prepared Chinese food.
C.He always enjoys making meals with families.
D.He likes all kinds of Chinese food especially hot pot.
36.What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 6?
A.A good diet can build up one’s health.
B.Some food can be harmful to health.
C.People ought to try different foods.
D.People have different tastes for food.
D
If you are looking to get a better understanding of the world around you, chemistry is the perfect subject to study. It’s a study of matter (物质), its properties — ways in which it behaves in special conditions, and how it interacts with everything around it. At the heart of all the discoveries, such as medicine, cooking, and several other areas, is one important table that organizes elements based on their atomic number and chemical properties: the periodic table.
Although the first periodic table was published in 1869, it was a work in progress for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Since ancient times, people have been interested in elements such as gold, tin, iron and copper (which are written as Au, Sn, Fe and Cu in the table) in their natural forms. They were dug up from the ground and used to make jewelry, guns, coins, and many other things. Over time, people became more curious about these metals and how they were made up. In ancient Greece, Aristotle and other philosophers said things were made from the elements of earth, water, fire and air. For years, this idea was accepted. Then people began to consider this idea again during the Age of Enlightenment.
In 1661, Irish scientist Robert Boyle described an element as something that “cannot be broken down into a simpler matter by a chemical reaction”. Over a century later, Antone-Laurent de Lavoisier, Father of Chemistry, would publish the first modern textbook on chemistry. In it, he listed some matter which he believed should be divided as elements into two groups: metals and non-metals. Although his work wasn’t completely correct, it represented a big step forward at that time.
Over the next century, scientists started to divide the elements into different groups depending on their properties and atomic weights. However, it is Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev who is usually believed as the first person to make a periodic table. Although other scientists had handed in tables, they were finally refused by the scientific community because they were short of details. Mendeleev put all of the elements in a proper order according to their atomic mass. He was even smart enough to leave empty spaces for elements which hadn’t been discovered at the time. Although Mendeleev’s periodic table wasn’t perfect, it set the way or order which is similar to the one used today.
37.Why did people first become interested in elements?
A.Many people wanted to be like a scientist.
B.They wanted to use metal s to make things.
C.People in ancient times was crazy about science.
D.They thought chemistry are useful for everything.
38.The writer mentioned Antonie-Laurent de Lavoisie ________.
A.to require us to care about the history
B.to encourage us to discover and think
C.to advise us to respect the great chemist
D.to remind us to pay attention to his contribution
39.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The influence of chemistry is the easiest to see in the real world.
B.Aristotle was spoken highly of during the Age of Enlightenment.
C.Mendeleev is usually considered the first person to create the table.
D.Robert Boyle was the one who wrote down every element on Earth.
40.This passage is mainly about ________.
A.what the table is like B.why the table is popular
C.how the table developed D.when the table first appeared

“The only constant (不变) in life is change,” Heraclitus said in about 500 B.C. That could be more true today. We live in a world that is changing every minute. 41 We get plenty of information every day. Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” In fact, there is more information in a newspaper than he would have experienced in his whole life.
42 That’s because our brains want to protect us. After all, who knows what new dangers might appear? However, change is also the only way of development. Nobody can stop it in life. Luckily, our brains become stronger when meeting the unknown. 43 To be more imaginative and creative, you should look for and find environments you have no experience with.
You can learn how to face the changes in daily life. You can try a new restaurant. 44 Small changes can help you gradually get used to uncertainty (不确定). So when bigger things happen, you’ll be more fully prepared for them.
People who fear change often stick to a certain lifestyle. 45 But change comes whether you ask for it or not. If you can move from just accepting it to actively finding it out and dealing with it, you will be successful.
A.Why are we afraid of change?
B.What can you do to face the changes?
C.They believe they can control the future by doing so.
D.Technology is out of date almost by the time we buy it.
E.You can also go to a concert you normally wouldn’t attend.
F.Dealing with the unexpected needs imagination and creativity.

Do you ever find yourself doing something without thinking about it? We do lots of things out of habit rather than for any good reason. Learning to c 56 healthy new habits can help you to reach your goals.
What is a habit?
A habit is something you do often, almost without thinking. Scientists say that habits are formed in the brain and i 57 a cause, action and a reward. If you have a habit of watching TV when you get home from school, the cause would be coming home from school; the a 58 is turning on the TV; and the reward might be the happy, relaxed feeling from watching your favorite program.
This good feeling makes you want to do the same thing after school the next day too, and over time it can become a h 59 .
How are habits good for you?
Turning something into a habit means you don’t have to think about it, which is good news when it’s healthy. Good habits can help g 60 against bad ones too, such as worrying. Sadie who is 11, finds her habit of playing with fidget toys (指尖玩具) r 61 stress. “They help me relax, “she says. Scientists believe that nearly half of everything we do every day is out of habit, s 62 forming helpful habits is also a great way to help you to reach your goals.
How can you start to build healthy new habits?
Dr Radha Modgil notes that it’s important to think about why you want to change. “What exactly do you want to a 63 and how are you going to do it?” she asks. When it’s time to begin, “Try the 1% i 64 where every day you improve or change something by 1%. A Hero in My Heart
Everyone has their own heroes. Some heroes can be great people, while other heroes may be common people. As for me, my father is my hero.
My father is an English teacher. He is tall with short hair. Although he is just an ordinary person, he has taught me a lot during my growth. I still remember one time when I failed my final exam badly. I was so afraid that I wanted to find excuses for my failure. My father was very angry, but not for my failure. Instead, he told me that I should face my problems bravely. To help me, he helped me find out my weaknesses, and think about ways to overcome them. From then on, I knew the true meaning of courage. It doesn’t mean that I am not afraid of anything but I can face my problems bravely instead of running away.
Thanks to my father, my hero, I can face all the problems bravely and become a person like him.
