Lixia, or the Start of Summer, falls on May 5 this year. It is the seventh solar term (节气) in the traditional Chinese calendar.
As its name suggests, in this solar term, spring is ending and summer is on its way. It’s a time when the temperature increases quickly with heavier rainfall. It’s also a time when crops grow quickly, so the solar term is important for farming.
The ancient Chinese people believed lixia also had something to do with health because of the rising humidity (湿度) and temperatures. For example, in Deqing county in Zhejiang province, people still follow the custom of weighing children on lixia when families go on an outing. A large scale (称) more than 1 meter long is hung on a small chair, allowing the child in the chair to be weighed safely. This custom is to remind people to keep fit and avoid weight loss in summer. Local people believe that after this weighing ceremony, children can survive and thrive (茁壮成长) in the summer heat.
A more interesting food custom on lixia is the way children eat and play with eggs. Parents put boiled eggs into small mesh (网状) bags, and hang them on their children’s chests. Egg fighting starts when a child goes to meet their friends, each holding an egg. They collide (碰撞) each other’s eggs in pairs. The winners continue the fighting. The last one whose egg is not broken is the final winner.
29.What will not happen after lixia?

The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity. The season brings along with its strong winds and snow — an environment that’s never comfortable to be in.
This unpleasant and even frightening part of winter can be often seen in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been driven out by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering (遭受痛苦) things that are usually saved for the poorest and most unlucky human beings.
The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being driven out by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It (1599), is fitting for this poor old man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man’s ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (无人性). There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.
Once winter became less of a danger to human beings, it became more positive in literary works. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations.
The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast (对比) to the fun going on indoors.
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal:
“Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce.”
It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.
Although winter still isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have surely “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days.
32.What can we learn from Shakespeare’s works?
A.Winter is compared with the ugly side of humanity.
B.Shakespeare didn’t like winter for its bad weather.
C.It’s in winter when King Lear drove his two daughters off.
D.King Lear was forced to give away his kingdom in a cold winter.
33.The author mentions Charles Dickens in the passage because _________.
A.a lot of his works are related to winter
B.he started a new way of representing winter
C.he is the most popular author of winter stories
D.his works make people feel cheerful in winter
34.The example of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is used mainly to show _________.
A.Christmas is still a symbol of joy in modern stories
B.traditional Christmas food makes the winter cheery
C.it’s a pleasure to read Christmas-related books in winter
D.winter has become the happiest season in literary works
35.The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to _________.
A.recommend some winter stories in literature
B.explain what winter is like in literary works
C.describe certain customs that are related to winter
D.tell us why winter is described as unpleasant in literature

Like detectives, archaeologists use evidence to solve mysteries. Detectives look for clues to solve crimes. Archaeologists look for clues to help them understand how people lived long ago. In fact, the word “archaeology” means “the study of ancient things”. One type of evidence used to learn about the past is pottery.
People have used pottery for thousands of years all over the world. Old pottery is usually found in pieces called “potsherds”. Sometimes potsherds found in the same place can be put back together to recreate the original pot. Even in pieces, old pottery can teach us about the past. When examining pottery, archaeologists consider not only its appearance but what it was made of and how it was made. With this knowledge, they can get information about people’s lives in ancient times. ①
Pottery is made by first adding water to a kind of soil called clay. When wet, clay can be formed into shapes. It is then heated. This hardens(使变硬) the clay and allows it to keep its shape. To make clay easier to shape and heat, potters(制陶工) use something called “temper”. Different materials can be used as temper. An archaeologist can tell where a pot came from by the types of clay and temper that were used. Sometimes a pot found in one location might have materials from another place. ②
Some of the earliest pots were made quite simply. A piece of clay was hollowed(掏空) out and shaped into a bowl. It was then heated at a low temperature. The finished pot was rough(粗糙), and often undecorated. This type of pot might be used for cooking. ③
Later, coiled pots were made. These were made by first rolling the clay into a long snake shape. The coil was then wound(绕) in circles to form a pot. They were often decorated in different ways. These pots were heated at high temperatures. The higher the temperature, the harder and longer-lasting the pot. Further improvements in pottery-making developed in different times and places. ④
A pot’s shape and decoration can provide clues about the past. Painted pictures might show events from daily life or from ancient stories. Archaeologists know certain shapes and styles that were common in different times and places.
Archaeologists study the differences in types of pottery closely. Because of their work, these daily objects can tell some of the mysteries of the past.
36.When examining pottery, archaeologists consider not only its appearance but what it was made of and how it was made.
The word “examining” means “________” in English.
A.studying B.displaying C.searching D.discovering
37.Why are the words “potsherds” and “temper” written in quotation marks(引号) in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.To remind readers that both words are very useful.
B.To make sure readers understand the words correctly.
C.To show that these words come from other languages.
D.To introduce the words that may be unknown to readers.
38.When is temper added to the clay?
A.Before the clay is shaped. B.After the pot is heated.
C.While the pot is being decorated. D.When the clay is hollowed.
39.We can put the sentence “This can provide clues about how people traded or travelled.” in Blank ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④

As AI art generators (生成器) take the world like a storm, many unexpected things happen at the same time. We don’t know whether it is good or not.

AI painters can create more than 1,000 new works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard.
