They had been best friends since childhood, sharing laughter, dreams, and adventures together. Unluckily, Sarah had a serious illness at the age of 16. When she heard the news, she was shocked. The news shook her and her friends, but it also made them build a powerful strong connection of support among them. As Sarah was in hospital, her friends went there to comfort (安慰) her and cheer her up. Even when Sarah lost her temper and said unpleasant words to them, her friends always found ways to make her happy and encouraged her to stay positive (积极的). Meanwhile, the experience also made Sarah’s friends different. They learned the true meaning of understanding, caring, and the importance of being there for someone in need. Each of them discovered their ways of supporting Sarah, whether it was through lending a listening ear, telling her interesting stories or looking after her. During these days, the connection between Sarah and her friends grew stronger as they experienced the ups and downs together. They celebrated small victories, shared joyful moments, and comforted one another during hard times. Their firm friendship became a source of hope and strength for Sarah on her difficult journey. Finally, Sarah’s health started to improve, and she landed on the path of recovery Her friends continued to be her rock, encouraging her to follow her dreams and never give up. C A 2, 000-year mystery (谜) has moved one step closer to being solved. AI software developed by researchers has successfully deciphered (辨读) the text from a burnt scroll (卷轴) found in the remains of an ancient Roman building in Italy. This could help us better understand the ancient world. In the centuries after the scrolls were discovered, many people have tried to open them, but ended up destroying some of them. Brent Seales, a computer scientist, has been trying to read these hidden texts for nearly 20 years. His team developed software to read the surface of scrolls using 3D CT images (图像). As the results were not satisfactory, they wondered whether machine-learning models might be trained to read the scrolls But making sense of all the information was a huge task for his small team. Luckily, in March 2023, the Vesuvius Challenge was introduced, offering a large prize to researchers worldwide. Researchers were asked to decipher four passages, of at least 140 characters each, before the end of the year. The key to the challenge’s success was the mix of competition and cooperation (合作), with Seales doing his part by sharing his software and images online. Smaller prizes were presented along the way to encourage progress, with the winning machine- learning algorithm (算法) shared at each stage to “level up” the community, so competitors could build on each other’s progress. The turning point came in the middle of last year, when physicist Casey Handmer noticed something that seemed to form the shapes of Greek letters—he called it “crackle”. In late October, an American university student studying computer science used the crackle to train a machine-learning algorithm, uncovering the word porphyras, “purple”. This won him the prize for discovering the first letters. An Egyptian student, who followed with even clearer images of the text, came second. At last, the two young researchers together with a Swiss student worked out over 2, 000 characters from one scroll, sharing the $700, 000 prize. The text of the already-opened scrolls is related to Greek philosophy (哲学), and researchers are likely to find more of the same in the scrolls. Also, the machine-learning techniques pioneered by researchers can now be used to study other types of hidden text. The progress suggested the future decipherment of the hundreds of scrolls that had been given up on before. The real gains are still ahead of us. 27.The Vesuvius Challenge was set up to __________. A.raise more money to develop AI software B.attract scientists to find more burnt scrolls C.collect more information on 3D technology D.involve more people in deciphering the scrolls 28.What can we learn from the passage? A.Casey Handmer won first prize for discovering the word “purple”. B.Researchers volunteered to teach students to read the hidden texts. C.Sharing among competitors helped to make the challenge successful. D.Different machine-learning models were trained to write Greek letters. 29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.AI unlocks secrets of 2,000-year-old scrolls B.Young adults take the lead in AI development C.Technology awakens curiosity about philosophy D.Big prizes bring about technological achievements A café in Toronto refuses to offer Wi-Fi to its customers. Its president, Jimson Biensenstock, explains his purpose is to get customers to talk with one another instead of being buried in their portable devices. What a brilliant idea! Perhaps Mr. Biensenstock knows what medical science has been increasingly proving: Social interaction is an extremely important contributor to good health and long life. In a study begun in 1965, the researchers found that people who were disconnected from others were about three times more likely to die during the nine-year study than people with strong social ties. In fact, they found that those with close social ties and unhealthful lifestyles actually lived longer than those with poor social ties but more healthful living habits. Another study in 1988 showed people who are continually lacking in social contacts are more likely to experience higher levels of stress and inflammation (炎症). These, in turn, can weaken the health of nearly every bodily system, including the brain. Absent social interactions, blood flowing to important organs (重要器官) is likely to be reduced and immune function (免疫功能) may be destroyed. Even how genes are expressed can be affected, damaging the body’s ability to turn off inflammation. In a 2010 report, sociology researchers at the University of Texas reported similar findings. The Texas researchers also pointed out that social interactions can boost good health through a positive influence on people’s living habits. For example, if none of your friends smoke, you’ll be less likely to smoke. Lack of social interactions also damages mental health. The emotional support provided by social connection helps to reduce the damaging effects of stress and can help develop “a sense of meaning and purpose in life”, the Texas researchers wrote. Emma Seppala of the Stanford Center wrote, “People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of anxiety and depression. Moreover, studies show they also have higher self-esteem (自尊), greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative and, as a result, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.” “In other words,” Dr. Seppala explained, “social connection leads to a positive feedback circle of social, emotional and physical well-being.” For those seeking a health-improving lifestyle, it’s not enough to focus on eating your vegetables and getting regular exercise. Don’t forget to connect. 30.What is the finding of the first two studies? A.Usual connection to others helps one live longer. B.Blood flowing in our body needs social interactions. C.Poor social ties lead to weak bodily system directly. D.Healthful living habits can be developed in social ties. 31.The underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”. A.reduce B.improve C.change D.harm 32.The writer probably agrees that ________. A.mental health connects to less purposeful life B.a meaningful life has nothing to do with social ties C.people having more social interactions are likely to be trusted D.social, emotional and physical well-being have the same value in their circle 33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage? A.To encourage people to develop social ties. B.To explain the benefits of social interaction. C.To discuss the bad effects of social interaction. D.To compare the close social ties with poor social ties. 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) How Audiobooks Help Readers and Inspire a Love of Books Not long ago, one of my third graders Jack was struggling (挣扎) to find books he liked. His teacher reported that he kept choosing books that were too simple or too difficult for him to manage on his own. I visited with Jack one morning to find out what he was looking for. He started telling me that he just didn’t like to read, but after a bit of conversation, he shared that he actually loved books about dragons. I thought of the Dragon Masters series. I took the first book off the shelf. When I opened the book, there were pictures to help him understand the story more easily. He was excited. We sat down to read a bit together, but it quickly became clear that it was hard for him to read. He was upset, but I told him I had an idea. We downloaded Sora which is a reading app with audiobooks and searched for an audiobook of the first Dragon Masters book. We printed it and picked up a bookmark to hold under each line as the narrator (讲述者) read so he could follow along. Two days later, he was back in the library happily. The last time I checked, he was nearing the end of the series. I have advised teachers to use audiobooks with struggling readers. However some people hold that audiobooks are not a substitute (替代品) for silent reading. I disagree. When a student struggles to decode (解码), the interest in reading disappears very quickly. Audiobooks can help students by allowing their joy of reading to increase as they continue to improve their reading skills in class. “If we give kids an audiobook, won’t that make them depend on them forever?” The answer is, I deeply doubt it. When we used training wheels, they didn’t prevent us from learning how to ride a bike. They provided support as we got confidence, and we learned to let them go and ride off into the sunset at the end of the street. If a student is enjoying audiobooks as part of their learning, the student will be a real reader when working with teachers to increase confidence in written text. 34.What kind of books did Jack like to read? 35.Why was Jack excited when the writer opened the book? 36.How could Jack follow along with the narrator? 37.Would you like to try audiobooks? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.) 提示词语:reuse, donate (捐赠), benefit, collect, textbooks 提示问题:● Why should we hold this activity? ● What preparations should we make? A.AI unlocks secrets of 2,000-year-old scrolls B.Young adults take the lead in AI development C.Technology awakens curiosity about philosophy D.Big prizes bring about technological achievements 【答案】27.D 28.C 29.A 【导语】本文主要讲述了研究人员开发的人工智能软件成功辨读卷轴中的文字。 27. 根据“the Vesuvius Challenge was introduced, offering a large prize to researchers worldwide. 【答案】30.A 31.B 32.C 33.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了社会交往与人的生理健康、心理健康的相互影响关系,并号召人们保持良好的人际交往活动。 30.细节理解题。根据前文“Perhaps Mr. Biensenstock knows what medical science has been increasingly proving: Social interaction is an extremely important contributor to good health and long life.”可知,文章提及的医学研究都共同证明社会交往对人的健康、长寿至关重要。选项A“正常的交往帮助人们更加长寿”符合语境。故选A。 31.词句猜测题。根据下文“through a positive influence on people’s living habits”可知,社交活动对人的生活习惯产生了积极的影响,将进一步改善人们身体健康。此处improve“改善”符合语境。故选B。 32.观点态度题。根据“studies show they also have higher self-esteem(自尊), greater empathy for others, are more trusting and cooperative”可知,有良好社交活动的人有更高的自尊,更多的同理心,也更加值得信任与合作。选项C“有更多社交活动的人更可能被信任”符合作者的观点。故选C。 33.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“For those seeking a health-improving lifestyle, it’s not enough to focus on eating your vegetables and getting regular exercise. Don’t forget to connect.”可知,作者鼓励人们在保持健康的生活习惯之余,需要保持良好的社交活动。选项A“鼓励人们发展社会关系”符合作者写本文章的目的。故选A。 第二部分 本部分共5题, 共20分。根据题目要求, 完成相应任务。 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) How Audiobooks Help Readers and Inspire a Love of Books Not long ago, one of my third graders Jack was struggling (挣扎) to find books he liked. (Please give two reasons.) 【答案】34.Books about dragons. 35.Because there were pictures to help him understand the story more easily. 36.By picking up a bookmark to hold under each line as the narrator read. 37. Yes, I’d like to. Because audiobooks may help me with some reading difficulties and they may improve my reading skills and interest./No. Because audiobooks may make me depend on them and they are not a substitute for silent reading. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了有声阅读的利弊。 34.根据“He started telling me that he just didn’t like to read, but after a bit of conversation, he shared that he actually loved books about dragons.”可知,杰克喜欢关于龙的书。故填Books about dragons. 35.根据“When I opened the book, there were pictures to help him understand the story more easily. He was excited.”可知,书里有很多图片帮助他理解故事,让杰克感觉很兴奋。故填Because there were pictures to help him understand the story more easily. 36.根据“We printed it and picked up a bookmark to hold under each line as the narrator (讲述者) read so he could follow along.”可知,通过使用书签。故填By picking up a bookmark to hold under each line as the narrator read. 37.开放性答案,回答合理即可。比如说愿意尝试,可以帮助解决阅读困难,提高阅读技巧和兴趣;如果不愿意尝试,阅读有声书会让自己变得依赖。故填Yes, I’d like to. Because audiobooks may help me with some reading difficulties and they may improve my reading skills and interest./No. Because audiobooks may make me depend on them and they are not a substitute for silent reading. 提示词语:reuse, donate (捐赠), benefit, collect, textbooks 提示问题:● Why should we hold this activity? ● What preparations should we make?
