Beauty in My Eyes
Beauty can be found everywhere in our life. Each person has own understanding of it. In my eyes, the beauty of a delicious meal cooked by my mom is the most touching.
Last week, I had a really tough time at school. I was under great pressure because of the coming exams. When I got home, my mom was busy cooking my favorite dishes in the kitchen. While we were eating, my mom listened patiently to my complaints and comforted me with kind words. At that moment, I realized that the meal was not just about the delicious food, but also about my mom’s love and care.
The meal made me feel warm and loved. My mom’s delicious meal is the most beautiful thing in my eyes.

I love snakes, while my mother does not. Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never seen one. Neither has my mother. So where does the fear come from?
To find out the answer, scientists put pictures with snakes, pandas, cats, flowers and many other things in front of a group of people of all ages, even babies. People found snakes faster than flowers. It wasn’t just snakes. They found “black faces”, another example, spiders (蜘蛛), faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems we find things that might be dangerous to us faster. Maybe we are born to be afraid of them.
Scientists also found people learned to fear snakes faster. Why did they fear snakes? Most of them said that in their experiences, they were influenced by the scared voice and faces of those who met snakes, but wasn’t bitten by snakes. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why is it important whether we are afraid of snakes or not? It may not matter much to us, but it is really very important to snakes, People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as pandas, but they’re just of the same importance to the environment. Snakes eat insects and mice that are pests (害虫) to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals so, when we kill snakes, we’re breaking the balance.
How can we reduce our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a study recently. Some volunteer students went on a field trip. With the help of safety tips, everyone could safely touch and hold a snake, It turns out that snakes aren’t so bad when you know the way to stay with them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren’t afraid afterwards. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favourite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mum on the next field trip.
54.In the writer’s opinion, what are “black faces”?
A.Things make people feel dangerous. B.Faces of animals in the pictures.
C.Things that have black faces. D.Faces of people in danger.

A.We might never see any snakes. B.We are not in danger any longer.
C.We might not fear snakes any more. D.We might already be killed by snakes.
56.How do the scientists help people reduce the fear of snakes?
A.By teaching people skills of killing snakes. B.By driving snakes away through a field trip.
C.By teaching them the right way to stay with them. D.By giving snakes a chance to show they are good.
57.What can we learn from scientists after reading the passage?
A.Don’t be afraid and find chances in danger. B.Always remember to give people safety tips.
C.Face failures bravely and never give up trying. D.Find problems and do research to solve them.

When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.
After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels ( 通 道 ). I was very surprised that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day something terrible happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Though the ants remained alive after the earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up to build their tunnels. They began to carry bodies to a corner of the farm.
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not understand why tunnels were gone. Although much time has passed, I still kept thinking of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to understand the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not learn until I met my problem recently. Adversity is a natural part of life and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot lose our heart when we are sad. We have to know that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.

a. Never give up. b. Respect for other’s hard work.
c. The importance of teamwork. d. A good beginning is half done.
A.abc. B.abd. C.acd. D.bcd.

ChatGPT is an AI system that can have a discussion and create written work. It can create material based on (基于) what it has learned from digital books and online passages. Now three high school students in Cyprus have developed an unusual robot with the help of their teachers. It is special as it uses ChatGPT AI technology.
The robot is named Ainstein. It is the size of a small adult and even has a screen for a face that appears to show human facial (面部) expressions. Its peaks a North American form of English. And it can tell jokes, like “Why was the math book sad? Because it had too many problems.” The robot enjoys reading science books and spending time playing the violin.
The creators of Ainstein want to use the technology to improve learning experiences in the classroom. In fact, there might be a place for robots in education after all. British education expert Anthony Seldom predicts (预言) that robots will get control of the classroom in 2027 and teachers will work as their helpers.
One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren’t enough teachers and 9-16 percent of children under the age of 14 don’t go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots, because they can teach anywhere and won’t get stressed, or tired, or move somewhere for an easier, higher-paid job.
66.What have the three high school students in Cyprus done?
A.They have written an AI system. B.They have helped their teachers.
C.They have created a special robot. D.They have discussed digital books.
67.The basic introduction to Ainstein can be found in ________.
A.Paragraph1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.
68.What can we learn from Anthony Seldon’ predicts?
A.Human teachers will no longer get stressed or tired.
B.Human teachers will get a higher payment very soon.
C.Robot teachers will take the place of human teachers.
D.Robot teachers will improve their own learning ability.
69.What might be the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the robot teacher?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Curious. D.Unclear.

“Brain Rot” has become a hot topic. It was chosen as Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2024. It was first used by writer Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden in 1854. In recent years, “Brain Rot” is used to show worries about people, especially young people, who are the most influenced by social media.
Test yourself to see if you are experiencing “Brain Rot”: 1. You spend 2 or more hours watching short videos on your phone.
2. You talk with your friends on Wechat or QQ for a long time instead of talking to them face to face.
3. You keep checking your phone, even when you know there’s nothing new.
4. When reading a book or studying, you keep thinking of some unimportant things, such as the videos that you have watched on your phone.
5. You give up difficult problems easily. To solve them, you usually check your phone for answers.
How many of the above can apply to you? If the answer is three or more, maybe you are experiencing “Brain Rot”.
How can we avoid “Brain Rot”?
Mike Black
I think we can avoid “Brain Rot” by making some rules about using our phones. We can set limits (限制) on screen time, like using our phones for 1 hour a day. Also, we can delete some apps from our phones, like TikTok, and turn off unnecessary messages for news and social media.
Hu Binbin
I think we can avoid “Brain Rot” by going after non-digital interests. Exercising with friends, playing the guitar, going camping with family and being volunteers are all non-digital interests. For me, connecting with people face to face is a good way to avoid it

55.What does the writer mean by saying “we might learn our lesson too late” in the third paragraph?

62.细节理解题。根据“My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not understand why tunnels were gone.”可知,我妈妈说蚂蚁们因悲伤而死,它们根本无法理解为什么隧道不见了,由此可知,玻璃农场里的蚂蚁开始死亡是因为它们不明白隧道为什么消失了。故选C。
63.词句猜测题。根据“Adversity is a natural part of life and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot lose our heart when we are sad. We have to know that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.”
根据“I was very surprised that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.”可知,我很惊讶每个人都知道该做什么,每个人都有自己的工作,由此可知,蚂蚁团队合作时各有各的工作,选项B“他们在团队合作时都有自己的工作。” 符合题意。故选B。
65.细节理解题。根据“Over the years, I came to understand the importance of teamwork.”明白了团队合作的重要性及“I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.表明要尊重他人的辛勤工作,再结合最后一段“Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.” 说明不能放弃,由此可知,选项A符合题意。故选A。

Hu Binbin
