(24-25高三上·江苏南通·阶段练习)My 10-year-old son Egbert was a picky eater. He only ate chicken nuggets and yogurt, and 1 to try new things. According to him, it’s because he has strong fears, including heights and the dark. I was hoping to find a way to 2 him without using old sayings like “If you don’t try it, you’ll never know if you like it.” So before our skiing trip to Los Angeles, I 3 a rule: we would say yes to everything, including new foods and experiences.
We said yes from the beginning of our 4 . At the airport café, Egbert began by trying new foods like vegetable meatballs. 5 , he rated it as “not bad”. The next day in the snowboarding school, 6 the fear of heights, Egbert challenged himself to learn how to 7 a chairlift (升降滑车). After skiing, we were both cold and wet, and Egbert suggested the outdoor hot tub. Though it would be a completely new experience for us, I 8 it together with him and the experience proved to be a 9 . I felt 10 of myself for trying something new.
On our summer holidays, we continued the 11 of saying yes. At the competition in Cody, Wyoming, neither of my son and I 12 when we were invited onto the field to join in the horse racing. Though we came back without prizes, we were both laughing, sweaty and 13 . I know it’s a moment we’ll never forget.
Therein lies the 14 of saying yes on vacation: it pushes us out of our comfort zone, though it’s not always possible to say yes to everything in our daily life. Developing a sense of 15 helps us live life to the fullest — even if we sometimes wind up cold and wet.

(24-25高三上·江苏常州·期末)Years ago, I faced a significant challenge with my water bills. As a single man living in my own house, I was astonished by the 1 amounts I had to pay. However, after digging multiple holes without success, I became quite 4 and almost gave up on the idea.
But then, a saying 5 to my mind: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” This 6 me to push through, so I encouraged the engineer to keep digging. After 7 more than 1000 feet into the earth, we finally made it.
This entire experience served as a meaningful 8 for me: in life, we’re all like individuals digging for wells, whether it’s in building relationships, chasing our dreams, or constructing our futures. 9 , we might feel like we’re putting in all our time, effort, and energy without seeing any 10 results. However, if we 11 with it and keep digging, we might find that we’re just moments away from the blessings and rewards we’ve been working so hard for.
So, keep digging in your own life. Don’t give up, even when things are 12 . You are worthy of achieving your goals. And when you finally reach them, celebrate your success and let everyone 13 your worth. Keep pushing forward, and you’ll find the water you’re 14 . Remember, every drop counts, and every 15 you make is a step towards your ultimate goal.

(24-25高三上·江苏苏州·阶段练习)The art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. Many people 1 it this way, “A man comes to this world with his fist clenched (紧握), but when he dies, his hand is 2 .”
Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is amazing, and full of a beauty that 3 your own earth. Sometimes we recognize this 4 only in our backward glance when we suddenly realize that it is no more.
We remember a beauty that 5 , a love that disappeared. But we remember with far greater pain that we did not see that beauty when it flowered, that we 6 to respond with love when it was tendered.
A recent experience re-taught me this truth. I was 7 following a severe heart attack and had been in intensive care for several days. It was not a pleasant place. One morning, I had to have some additional tests. The required machines were located in a building at the opposite end of the hospital, so I had to be 8 across the courtyard on a gurney (轮床).
As we 9 from our unit, the sunlight hit me. That’s 10 . And yet how beautiful it was — how warming, how sparkling, how brilliant!
I looked to see whether anyone else enjoyed the sun’s golden glow, but everyone was 11 to and from, most with eyes fixed on the ground. Then I remembered how often we had been 12 to the beauty of each day, too preoccupied with chores. Life’s gifts are 13 — but we always pay no attention to them. Never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. Embrace each hour, 14 each golden minute. Hold fast to life … but not so fast that you can’t let go. We must 15 our losses, and learn how to let go.
