Matthew Weihmuller, despite being blind from birth, earned his master’s degree in music at Florida State University. He also tours with a band that shows elements of jazz and rock. Additionally, he is a composer, using specialized music technology for the blind. He frequently engages as a speaker, having been a guest lecturer at John Hopkins University.
While explaining his shift from performance to teaching, Weihmuller said, “All great performers teach, and it’s the only way to pass along this craft, especially about jazz music. I found that teaching became more my calling than performing. I wanted to make a difference, and that was really important to me.”
Innovatively, Weihmuller uses a unique teaching method to enhance communication among jazz students. When practising a play, he turns off the lights, removes the visualelements and forces students to rely more on their other senses. They have to feel their instrument with their fingers and hands. Weihmuller’s own blindness has fueled his mastery of other senses, particularly crucial in playing jazz. “You have to turn your disadvantage into an advantage. Where there is a will, there is a way.” Weihmuller said.
Reflecting on his early struggles with sheet music, Weihmuller recalled the challenge of obtaining braille (盲文) music, which was not as accessible then as it is today. To overcome this obstacle, he had to create his own braille music, a process that continued through his college years.
Weihmuller has a strong desire to influence his students with value of perseverance and musical progression. His ultimate goal is to inspire others facing challenges and disabilities. He added, “I do hope that when they leave my classroom, they’re not only better musicians but also better people.”
24. What can we learn about Weihmuller from Paragraph 1?
A. He has multiple roles. B. He owns a music band.
C He complains of his disability. D. He gives talks worldwide.
25. What drives Weihmuller to turn to music teaching?
A. The duty to help performers. B. The strong desire to succeed.

A. To reduce students’ anxiety. B. To train physical abilities.
C. To teach students better. D. To test learning results.

A. Outgoing and caring. B. Courageous and honest.

A group of clams (河蚌) recently caught people’s attention after an article was posted by China Science Communication online. Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland.
Gruba Kaska pumping station, which stands in the River Wisla, helps provide millions of liters of water to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. However, one particular concern for the water quality has been heavy metals, and researchers sought help from nature to solve this problem.
Clams are sensitive to pollutants in their environment as they filter (过滤) water to feed on microorganisms (微生物). They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water.
Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. After the clam “employees” become accustomed to the local water, they are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to a system that records how wide the shells are open. If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will be set off and the water supply will be shut down. The result is reliable because the creatures are considering many different factors at the same time, according to ZME Science.
Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different species of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle waste, according to ABC News. As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.
Similarly, cockroaches are used to deal with kitchen waste at several firms in China, according to a report of The Beijing News. About 300 million cockroaches are fed 15 tons of food waste on a daily basis, and they themselves are a good protein resource for livestock.
28. What is the new usage of clams?
A. To solve the food shortage. B. To relieve people’s anxiety.
C. To remove heavy metals sooner. D. To check the water quality.
29. What does “this” in paragraph 4 probably refer to?
A. The clams are used to the local water.
B. The clams prefer to close their shells.
C. The clams are regarded as delicious food.
D. The clams are sensitive to polluted water.
30. How did the researchers obtain the research finding?
A. By selecting different kinds of clams.
B. By referring to some historical records.
C. By analysing the results of the records.
D. By interviewing some experts of ZME Science.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Animals, Good Helpers of Humans B. Three Kinds of Amazing Animals
C. A Special Way to Test Water Quality D. Animals, Far More than Tasty Food
D
In a response to the threat posed by rising sea levels, South Korea showed the world’s first model of sustainable floating city in Busan.
“Sea level rise poses a threat for some small islands and some low-lying coasts,” says a recent report. The global sea level has risen by eight to nine inches since 1880. What’s more frightening is that one-third of the rise in sea level happened in the last 25 years.
The floating city aims to provide technology for coastal cities facing severe land shortages that are combined by climatic threats. The city will serve as the “world’s first model sustainable floating city” aiming to be “a structure that rises with the sea” supplying its own food, energy and water.
The floating city has six combined systems: zero waste and circular systems, closed-loop water systems, food, net-zero energy, innovative movement, and coastal habitat regeneration. These interconnected systems will generate 100 percent of the required energy through floating and rooftop photovoltaic panels(光伏板).
Each neighborhood will treat and refill its own water, process and recycle resources, and provide innovative urban agriculture. The floating city is the world’s first model of a sustainable floating community. The interconnected neighborhoods spread across 6.3 hectares that can hold a community of 12,000 people. Starting from a community of 3 platforms with 12,000 residents and visitors, it has the potential to expand to more than 20 platforms. The floating platforms have dozens of productive stations with photovoltaic panels and greenhouses that can expand and contract(收缩) over time based on the city’s needs.
“I take seriously our commitment ‘The First to the Future’. Our common future is at risk in the face of sea level rise and its impact on coastal cities,” said Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, who has set a schedule, including turning Busan into a green smart city and compete for World Expo 2030.
This is as frightening as it is exciting to reach such an achievement, but living in a city that is like the communities where people try to survive in the movie Water World is kind of unhappy.
32. Why does South Korea build the floating city?
A To deal with the sea level rise. B. To develop the sustainable energy.
C. To increase the land to grow plants. D. To help reduce the global temperature.
33. What can we know about the floating city?
A. It doesn’t need agriculture. B. It has six separate systems.
C. It produces energy by rooftop. D. It can provide almost everything by itself.
34. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How the floating city will operate in its way.
B. How many people the floating city will hold.
C. How the floating city will produce its energy.
D. How the floating city will recycle its resources.
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Busan witnesses sea level rise. B. Rising sea level threatens Busan.
C. Living in a floating city is exciting. D. The first floating city is on the way.

On a cold and stormy winter day, an old friend invited me out for a cup of coffee. We met by his house, and as we walked down the street, we passed by a small cafe with a sign hanging on the door that read, “Welcome! We have suspended coffee.”
“Suspended coffee?” I asked my friend. “What does that mean?” “Have you never heard of it?” my friend asked. I shook my head. “Follow me,” he said, and we joined the line of people standing in front of the cash register.
“What can I offer you today?” the cashier asked a young couple who were looking at the menu. “I think we’ll take three cups of coffee,” one of them said. “Two now, and one suspended.” The cashier nodded, as if it were an ordinary order. He took their payment and placed two cups of hot coffee on the counter. The couple thanked him, took the two cups and left without waiting for the third. The next people in line were an older couple. “Same order as always?” the cashier asked with a smile. “Yes, thank you,” replied the woman. “But please add two cups of suspended coffee. We haven’t purchased any of those for quite a while.”
A few minutes later, the older couple received their order. It was now our turn to order. “Good morning!” said the cashier. “How can I help you?” “I think we’d like two cups of coffee,” my friend said. “We’ll drink them here.” When our order was ready, we took our cups and sat down to drink. “Will you tell me what this is about?” I asked my friend, but he just said, “Wait and see.”
Our conversation flowed, and before we noticed it, nearly two hours passed. The cafe was almost empty when the door suddenly opened and a tired looking man in old shabby clothes came in and stood quietly in front of the cash register.
