The crime(犯罪活动) took place(发生) in a seaside suburb(海滨郊区) of
Cape Town(开普敦). Spotting(发现) the car with its window
left open, the greedy thief(贪婪的窃贼) didn't hesitate(犹豫).
Within seconds, he had reached inside and run
away with a bag of shopping. No matter how
many(无论多少) crimes he committed(犯), the police were
powerless to arrest(无法抓捕) him. You see, this was no
ordinary criminal(普通的罪犯), it was a chacma baboon.
Once almost unheard of, scenes(场景) like this one
in Cape Town are now common all over the
world. With foxes(狐狸) in London, mountain lions
in San Francisco and wild pigs in Hong Kong,
it is almost as if(好像) our cities are being taken over(占领)
by wild animals.
People often wonder(想知道) about the reasons behind this mass(大规模) urban migration(迁徙).
Most of us would assume(认为) that urban
development and climate change are
responsible for(对…负责) pushing(推动) the animals out of
their natural habitats. However(无论多么) true this is,
we also need to consider that some of these
so-called(所谓的) “urban animals” have never moved
at all(根本不) -- it's we humans who have moved into
their territory(领地). Wherever(无论哪里) they go, animals find
towns and cities in their way. With nowhere
else to make their homes(安家), they have no choice
but to move(别无选择只能搬) in with us.
Yet, for its newest and wildest inhabitants, a city can offer man benefits.
As our cities become greener, they offer
increasingly appealing(吸引人的) spaces to animals
looking for new habitats. Out of reach
from(远离) many of their natural predators(捕食者), these
newcomers(新来者) often flourish(蓬勃发展) in their new city
lives. Today, foxes can be seen all over
London -- one even being found living on the
72nd floor of the Shard building(夏德大厦) when
it was under construction(在建的)! What's more,
hungry animals are finding plenty(大量) to eat
in our gardens and in the leftovers(剩饭剩菜)
we throw away(扔掉).
One thing crucial(至关重要的) to the increasing number of "urban animals" is their ability
to adapt(适应能力).
There is evidence that(有证据显示) urban racoons(浣熊) are
more intelligent(聪明的) than their wild cousins,
as they frequently(时常) have to figure out(弄清楚)
difficult problems such as how to open
rubbish bins(垃圾桶) and other containers(容器) which
they would not find in the wild. Some
animals have even changed their living
habits to fit in with(适应) their new homes.
Although naturally active at night, urban
foxes come out in daylight(白天) if the reward(回报)
is good enough. Their city location also
means that they are getting a taste for(尝试)
the multicultural(多元文化的) cuisine菜肴 on offer(提供) from
the garbage(垃圾), such as hamburgers, lamb
kebabs(烤羊肉串) and even garlic bread(香蒜面包)!
For those animals that don't adapt, the city can be a dangerous or even deadly(致命的) place.
Unable to distinguish(分辨) between blue sky and glass, birds crash into(撞向)
windows at speeds of(以…的速度) about 30 miles per hour. Recent studies(最近的研究)
estimate(估计) that between 400 million and 1 billion birds die from(死于) window
impacts each year in the US alone. Shockingly令人震惊的是, these deaths amount to(等于)
around ten per cent of the total US bird population. Some species are
more affected than others. One theory behind this is that these birds have
yet to(还没有) change their migratory routes(迁徙的路线) that take them through cities with
high-rise buildings.
However they adapt to(适应) our ways of urban living, it's important that
we get a better understanding of and even learn to appreciate(欣赏) our wild
neighbors. Only then can we look towards(部分倒装) harmoniously sharing our
urban habitats. Whatever(无论什么) the reasons behind these species entering our
cities, one thing is for sure(确定) -- as it's often a means of their survival(生存), they
could be with us to stay.
