A World of Unique New Year Celebrations
Most of us spend the final seconds of each calendar year watching a nearly 12,000-pound geodesic ball drop over Times Square in New York City. Close to 60,000 audience gather to see the ball drop in person, but if being one of them is on your dream list, be forewarned: There are no bathrooms, and to get a good view, you’ll likely need to grab your spot and start holding it around 3 p.m.
New Year’s Eve in Scotland is known as Hogmanay. The Scots stretch it into a three-day celebration starting with a parade through Edinburgh on Dec. 30, followed by a housecleaning known as the redding. Then, during “first footing”, friends and family visit each other after mid-night to become the first to set foot in each others’ homes in the new year. For good luck, the first visitor should be a tall, dark-haired man, carrying shortbread, whisky and a lump of coal. So if you find coal in your Christmas stocking, ship it to your friends in Scotland to use a few days later.
Greeks smash pomegranates (石榴), which symbolize renewal in their culture, for New Year’s celebration. But perhaps an even more unusual practice is waking up children on Jan. 1 by tapping them on the head with an onion. It’s considered good luck in many Spanish-speaking nations to eat 12 grapes at midnight — one with each clock strike — on Jan.1. Estonians sometimes swallow 12 meals on the last day of the year. Germans go for marzipan shaped like pigs, thanks to the phrase “schwein gehabt”, which means having good luck. And the French eat crepes, representing the sun, in hopes of brighter days and prosperity in the new year, although they do it slightly later, on Feb. 2, during a festival called La Chandeleur.
1. What should be considered by the geodesic ball drop enthusiasts?
A. Personal safety.
B. Viewing location.
C. Weather conditions.
D. Transportation options.
2. What might people do on the last night of the year in Scotland?
A. Dress up as a coal man.
B. Participate in the redding.
C. Welcome the first guest.
D. Watch the Edinburgh show.
3. Which country has a tradition of overeating on New Year’s Eve?
A. Greece. B. Estonia.
C. Germany. D. France.

When I was young, my dreams were simple. I wanted a dog, a house with stairs, and a four-door station wagon. I used to say I wanted to be a pediatrician (儿科医生) — not because I truly understood what it meant, but because it sounded impressive to adults. I was ambitious, though I didn’t know exactly where I was headed.
Looking back now, I find it odd that adults ask children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It seems as if growing up is finite and at some point you become something and that’s the end. My life has taken many forms. I’ve been a lawyer, a hospital executive, and a charity initiator helping young people. I’ve been a wife, a painful daughter, and a mother learning as I go. And, for eight years, I was the leader of an international nonprofit organization — a role that brought unique challenges and opportunities, humbling and empowering me in equal measure.
The experience of working for the UN allowed me to see the world in its extremes. I visited state-of-the-art offices and met small-business owners who had lost everything in economic downturns, grateful for a steady income. I encountered dishonesty and shallowness but also met incredible innovators, dedicated employees, and young entrepreneurs (企业家) whose passion and optimism reminded me of what truly matters. I learned to manage public opinion, whether it was criticism of my business decisions or rumors (传闻) about my management style. Through it all, I focused on staying true to myself, grounded by the values my mentors (导师) taught me: work hard, think strategically, and honor your journey.
Now, I’m beginning a new chapter. My family recently moved into a modern apartment not far from our office, decorated with items that remind us of our achievements. As I sat on the balcony, watching my children play, I realized that my children are growing into independent individuals. My family is finding their rhythm in a new adventure. And I’m here, enjoying these small, quiet moments and thinking about the stories I still want to tell.

Focusing on eating disorders, an exhibition at the Shanghai Mental Health Center has been displaying the drawings and clay works of eating disorder sufferers as art therapy. These works reveal their complex emotions towards food, with a mixture of dependence, resistance, longing, and fear. The exhibition aims to help the public better understand the diseases and show more tolerance and care.
Chen Jue, director of the Eating Disorders Treatment Center of SMHC, says that there is still much misunderstanding towards eating disorders. “People simply perceive such patients as those who don’t eat well, make a fuss about diets and go to extremes in losing weight.” However, eating disorders are physiological (生理性的) disorders that are closely related to psychological factors.
The number of female patients suffering from eating disorders is universally far higher than male. A 19-year-old woman who finally ended her two-year fight with anorexia (厌食症) says that a main factor is that social culture puts more pressure on women in terms of appearance.
In 2022, as high as 77 percent of anorexia patients hospitalized at the EDTC were younger than 18. People between 13 and 20 years old are the most affected by anorexia. “Children nowadays are brought into proximity with the internet world at an early age. People tend to beautify their photos to make their faces and bodies slimmer,” says Chen. “Also, they will hear adults talking about going on diets and losing weight quite often. Gradually, they’ll form a concept that a slim figure means beauty, attention and self-discipline.” she adds.
The exhibition is harvesting goodwill from the public. “The gallery allowed me to learn for the first time that patients with eating disorders are enduring hardships. I feel that they are very brave and hope they can recover soon.” reads a message in the message book. Zhang Qinwen, who participated in designing the exhibition and was once a patient for years herself, hopes the public can understand the essence of eating disorders through the form of art, but not ignore the pain due to the artistic expressions.
8. What is the purpose of the exhibition?
A. To raise the awareness of the public.
B. To show the artistic talent of sufferers.
C. To promote art therapy among patients.
D. To display various artworks on anorexia.
9. What is the main cause of eating disorder among females?
A. Working burden.
B. Strong urge to diet.
C. Weaker self-control.
D. Social appearance pressure.
10. What do the underlined words “brought into proximity with” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Seriously warned of.
B. Constantly exposed to.
C. Hardly influenced by.
D. Completely separated from.
11. How can we describe the exhibition from the last paragraph?
A. Well-received.
B. Highly-profitable.
C. Terribly-exhausting.
D. Time-consuming.

Stanford University has recently conducted a remarkable study that may hold the key to renewing the aging brain. The research, published in the renowned journal Nature, focused on the GLUT4 gene.
In the normal aging process, neural stem cells (干细胞) in the brain, which are responsible for generating new neurons (神经元), gradually lose their activity. This decline leads to a reduction in the production of new neurons, subsequently resulting in a worsening memory and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The Stanford team, led by Professor Anne Brunet, set out to explore ways to change this trend.
Using the powerful CRISPR gene-editing technology, the researchers screened 300 genes related to the activity of neural stem cells in mice. This was a painstaking and time-consuming task that required thorough attention to detail. After a complex process of removal and confirmation, they eventually identified the GLUT4 gene. This gene plays a crucial role in transporting glucose (葡萄糖) into cells. Interestingly, in the aged brain, neural stem cells are surrounded by high levels of glucose, which might be the cause of their inactivity.
To test their theory, the dedicated research team attentively knocked out the GLUT4 gene in the brains of old mice. Astonishingly, after a few weeks of close observation and detailed analysis, they observed a remarkable doubling in the number of new neurons in the olfactory bulbs (嗅球) of these mice. This unexpected yet significant finding strongly suggests that by precisely regulating glucose levels, it is potentially possible to effectively reactivate the neural stem cells in the aging brain and powerfully stimulate the generation of new neurons.
This research not only opens up new avenues for the development of drugs and gene treatments aimed at promoting neuronal regeneration in the aged or damaged brain but also implies that simple lifestyle advice, such as a low-carbohydrate (碳水化合物) diet, might potentially activate neural stem cells. It is a significant step forward in our understanding of brain health and offers hope for maintaining cognitive function in the elderly.
12. What was the motivation of the Stanford researchers?
A. To prove neural stem cell decline is unavoidable.
B. To find ways to speed up the normal aging process.
C. To turn around the trend of neural stem cells decline.
D. To study the working behavior of neurons in the brain.
13. What is the function of the GLUT4 gene?
A. It affects the delivery of glucose in cells.
B. It decreases the number of anti-aging cells.
C. It changes the structure of neural stem cells.
D. It keeps neural stem cells from some diseases.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The relationship between diet and new neurons.
B. The process of observing new neurons in old mice.
C. The application of the GLUT4 gene in medical fields.
D. The experiment to test the assumption about GLUT4 gene.
15. Why is a low-carbohydrate diet mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To unlock the secret of the aging brain.
B. To show an application of the new research.
C. To confirm the significance of a healthy diet.
D. To demonstrate the drawback of the research.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
A Valentine’s Day joke is a funny but super sweet way to celebrate love without being quite so serious! Old Lady Hayes deserved it. She often screamed at us for “borrowing” some roses from her garden. Well, she had it coming.
At least, that’s the way we saw it as George finished tying the string to the red, heart-shaped box. We giggled(咯咯笑)as Ron added the final touch: two plastic red roses, glued to the lid. George practiced pulling the box by the string. I couldn’t wait to see it fly away when she tried to pick it up.
I was the first to notice my dad in the doorway. I froze. Within seconds, my anxiety was shared by all. Dad walked slowly to the empty candy box. He picked it up, and watched it swing back and forth. Then he looked into the eyes of the frightened boys.
“It doesn’t seem so long ago that I was playing Valentine’s Day jokes.” he said. “One year my cousins and I decided to pull one on our grandma even though we loved her. We just wanted to have some fun. We tiptoed to her doorstep and drew a gift there with red paint. Then we kicked the door and hid behind the bushes. When Grandma finally appeared, she looked down and reached for the fresh paint. Slowly, she figured out our joke. She smiled, absently wiping red paint on her clean and white apron(围裙).”Dad paused and for the first time I noticed that his eyes were wet. “Grandma died later that year. I never had another chance to give her a real Valentine.”
Later that night a red heart-shaped box was placed on Mrs. Hayes’ front doorstep. As we hid behind the bushes, the cool night air wrapped around us, adding a chill to our excitement. “Do you think she’ll scream?” I whispered. “Maybe she’ll think it’s a real gift this time,” George replied, trying to hold back his giggles.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, we heard the door click open.

Hearing the giggles, Mrs Hayes walked up to the bushes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Just then, we heard the door click open. Out came Mrs. Hayes with a lamp in her hand. When her eye fell on the red, heart-shaped box, she leaned closer with a mixture of confusion and excitement. Driven by curiosity, she reached out her hand, picked it up and opened it with trembling hands. On seeing the candy, she could hardly contain her joy. A broad smile spread over her face. Seeing the surprise and happiness in her eyes, we couldn’t help giggling, covering our mouths with hands.
Hearing the giggles Mrs Hayes looked up at the bushes. We had nowhere to hide, so we jumped out of the bushes, yelling “Happy Valentine’s Day!”. She stood rooted to the spot, speechless with surprise. Recovering from the shock, she walked to us and hugged us tightly, saying “Thank you all!” with tears of happiness welling up in her eyes. At the same time, a great wave of warmth swept over us. The box of candy would be treasured as it was a reminder of an amazing Valentine’s Day.

A World of Unique New Year Celebrations
Most of us spend the final seconds of each calendar year watching a nearly 12000-pound geodesic ball drop over Times Square in New York City.
A. Greece. B. Estonia.
C. Germany. D. France.
B
4. Why did the author want to be a pediatrician as a child?
A. She was always there to assist.
B. She had a passion for medicine.
C. It meant more responsibilities.
D. It would make adults admire her.
5. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A. Childhood dreams are rarely fulfilled.
B. People should have lifelong ambitions.
C. Life involves constant change and growth.
D. Adults are unsure about their own future.
6. What belief did working for the UN give the author?
A. Avoid public opinion at all costs.
B. Seek external recognition for success.
C. Consider gaining wealth and social status.
D. Stay true to herself against challenges.
7. What mood does the author mainly convey in the last paragraph?
A. Ambitious. B. Reflective.
C. Anxious. D. Stressed.
C

Instead of reacting, you might take a deep breath, bend down to Sam’s level and say, “I can see you’re disappointed. I feel disappointed sometimes, too.” ____19____ You’re showing him that while his feelings are valid, there are ways to express them respectfully. This shows emotions are manageable and not something to fear.
As an emotion coach, you aren’t punishing your child for their reaction or shutting down their feelings. Instead, you’re guiding him to recognize and handle his emotions, laying the groundwork for better emotional resilience (适应力). The more you practice this, the more your child learns to manage these emotions independently. ____20____
