Pangu Separates Heaven and Earth
In the ancient times of chaos, the universe was like a vast egg, enveloped in a state of primal confusion. Within this egg, Pangu, the primal giant, gestated for eighteen thousand years. Upon awakening, he wielded a mighty axe and split the chaos into two, causing the lighter and clearer elements to ascend and form the sky, while the heavier and darker elements descended to create the earth.
Fearing that the heavens and earth might recombine, Pangu stood with his head touching the sky and his feet pressing against the earth. Every day, he grew taller by a zhang (an ancient Chinese unit of length), and the sky and earth expanded accordingly. This continued for another eighteen thousand years until the universe became stable.
After Pangu's death, his body transformed into the myriad things of the world. His breath became the clouds and fog, his voice the thunder, his left eye the sun, his right eye the moon, his blood the rivers, his muscles the soil, his hair and beard the vegetation, his bones the rocks and minerals, and his teeth and bones the precious metals and gems.
Thus, Pangu's creation of the universe through his separation of heaven and earth became a cornerstone of Chinese mythology, symbolizing the birth of the world and the beginning of all life.

Nüwa Creates Humans
In ancient Chinese mythology, there existed a goddess named Nüwa, who possessed immense power and a kind heart. One day, as she wandered across the vast and desolate earth, Nüwa felt a deep sense of loneliness, as there were no other living creatures like her to share the world. Determined to end her solitude, she decided to create beings to populate the earth.
Gathering yellow clay from the ground, Nüwa began to shape it carefully with her deft hands, molding it into the form of humans. Each figure was unique, embodying the diverse forms that life could take. After completing a figure, she breathed her divine breath into it, giving it life. As she blew, the clay figures came to life, opening their eyes, moving their limbs, and starting to talk.
Encouraged by the success of her first creations, Nüwa continued her work tirelessly. She made men and women of different shapes and sizes, filling the world with laughter and vitality. These newly created humans soon began to build their own homes, form families, and create civilizations, turning the once desolate earth into a bustling place full of life and activity.
However, as the number of humans grew, Nüwa realized that she needed a faster method to create them. So, she took a willow branch, dipped it in the clay, and flicked it off, creating numerous clay babies in a much shorter time. These babies, too, came to life and grew up to become part of the thriving human population.
Nüwa watched over her creations with a warm heart, teaching them how to live in harmony with each other and the natural world. She became their guardian goddess, and her creation gave humans endless hope and happiness. Thus, the story of Nüwa creating humans has been passed down through generations, celebrating the unique charm of Chinese mythology and the boundless creativity of the human imagination.

Passage C
My father was busy fixing Belinda’s spaceship all afternoon. In the evening, I went to the landing place. “Dear Father,” I said politely. “Have you found Belinda’s parents yet?”
“Not yet, my dear.” He shook his head.
I felt relaxed. I didn’t want to meet Belinda’s parents—they might be ten times as loud and bossy as she was.
But Belinda had followed me.
“Not yet?” she shouted. “Why not? I’ll send them a message! They’ll listen to me!”
Belinda ran to the radio. She shouted into it so loudly that I had to cover all my four ears. “Mummy! Daddy! I’m on an awful spaceship full of purple people! Come and find me now!”
“Poor Belinda!” my sister came and said. “Her parents must be missing her.”
“Huh!” I snorted (发出哼声). “Missing her? You’re joking! Who would want such a bossy kid back? They probably lost her on purpose.”
Belinda’s face clouded. I thought she was going to shout again, but she didn’t. Instead, something very strange happened — her eyes began to water!
“Oh, help!” said Roa. “Is she dying?”
I felt terrible. “Don’t die, Belinda! I didn’t mean it.”
Then Belinda opened her mouth wide and shouted, “What if it’s true? What if they’ve gone away and left me here forever?”
We were all so busy comforting Belinda that we didn’t notice the soft knock of a ship landing outside. We didn’t see two tall people come out of it until Belinda ran out in excitement.
“Mummy! Daddy!”
Belinda’s parents were even uglier than she was, but they looked polite. “Hello, dear,” the female said. “We’re sorry we kept you waiting.”
We smiled as the three of them boarded their spaceship. “Goodbye!” shouted Belinda. “Goodbye! Thanks for taking care of our baby girl!” said her father.
None of us answered. We waved (挥手) cheerfully as the ship took off and went far away into the stars.

①Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and the ship—the Nautilus. Then, he took me to my cabin(房舱). It was a very comfortable bedroom and was next to his cabin. His cabin had an instrument panel(仪表板), and on this he could see everything that he needed to know to sail the Nautilus.
②He told me that he had found a way to make electricity using salt and mercury(汞). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps(泵)filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise. I was surprised to find that the Nautilus even had a small dinghy(小艇). Captain Nemo could enter the dinghy from the Nautilus while it was underwater and go to the surface. Then, the Nautilus would come up to collect him.

As we walked to the engine room(发动机舱), we passed the large kitchen and crew(船员)room. The door of the crew room was closed, so I could not see how many men were asked to work on the Nautilus.
