Growing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted to do and it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. In high school, I hated writing essays. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my scattered thoughts into fluent sentences and I often received papers marked with numerous corrections. I began to wonder if I was simply not cut out for writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
I focused instead on my love for math and science. I took comfort there, knowing objective truth could be found if I searched methodically. In college, I studied engineering and joined a research lab to gain hands-on experience. My first project was to improve the efficiency of a magnetic component. Despite initial disappointing results, I continued through numerous designs. Eventually, we developed a design that halved energy losses. I was delighted — until my professor told me to write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted to become a researcher, I would need to spend time penning papers. But I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was searching for an efficient design?”
I polished my paper’s outline into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Though my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjoyed the process of improving it. Writing has since become one of my favorite parts of research, helping me organize my thoughts. I’ve even started writing popular science articles, which I never could have imagined during my early struggles with essays.

C
A can of soft drink and two large eggs may have a similar number of calories, but the eggs will provide us with protein, vitamins and other nutrients, and satisfy our hunger, while a fizzy drink provides little more than calories. The important concept here is nutrient density (密度), which refers to the number of nutrients we take in for each calorie consumed. No one would suggest replacing sweet drinks with eggs, but what can we do to increase nutrient density in our diet?
“Have you had your five a day?” on British supermarket shelves is a reminder to customers to ensure they are eating at least five slices of fruits and vegetables per day, promoting a healthy diet. Many countries have launched similar campaigns to encourage people to eat more healthily. Fresh, natural produce is usually very dense in nutrients. Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important, so some advice focuses on including different colors of food in our diets. “Eating a rainbow” could be one way to get more nutrients.
Other advice recommends that we should be more adventurous in what we eat. Cooking food that we haven’t eaten before can lead us to use ingredients that we don’t usually consume. This can give us a wider range of nutrients. It’s not just about fruit and vegetables. Even flavorings such as garlic, ginger or turmeric can have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while also leading people to use less salt. Dairy products such as milk and cheese, are high in calcium, while in limited amounts, meat can be a good source of protein.
If you’re not feeling that adventurous, then swapping food items can be beneficial. Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white bread or rice can increase fibre intake. Unsalted nuts provide more nutrients than snacks such as crisps. Possibly surprisingly, popcorn is a wholegrain snack that is high in fibre.
So, fresh fruit and vegetables, swapping the worst things, and just a little bit more adventure could be the secret to a more nutritious diet.
8. What does “Eating a rainbow” suggest?
A. Focusing on low-calorie foods.
B. Avoiding white and black foods.
C. Adding variously colored foods to what we eat.
D. Including rainbow-colored snacks in our diets.
9. What can happen if we are more adventurous in our food choices?
A. We reduce calories in our diets. B. We eat more fruits and vegetables.
C. We consume more unhealthy food. D. We gain access to diverse nutrients.
10. Which of the following is the healthiest swap?
A. Swapping white rice for wholegrain rice.
B. Swapping two eggs for a can of soft drink.
C. Swapping popcorn for wholegrain bread.
D. Swapping unsalted nuts for white bread.
11. Which of the following serves as the best title?
A. Eating a balanced diet is essential
B. Nutrient density is key to a healthy diet
C. Eggs are a better choice than sugary drinks
D. Fruits and vegetables are always the best choice
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第二段中“Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important, so some advice focuses on including different colors of food in our diets. “Eating a rainbow” could be one way to get more nutrients.(吃各种各样的水果和蔬菜很重要,所以一些建议侧重于在我们的饮食中加入不同颜色的食物。“Eating a rainbow”可能是获得更多营养的一种方法)”可推知,这里强调通过在饮食中加入不同颜色的食物来获取更多营养。故选C。
9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Cooking food that we haven’t eaten before can lead us to use ingredients that we don’t usually consume. This can give us a wider range of nutrients.(烹饪我们以前没有吃过的食物会导致我们使用我们通常不吃的食材。这可以给我们提供更广泛的营养)”可知,通过尝试新食物,可以获取更多种类的营养。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white tread or rice can increase fibre intake. Unsalted nuts provide more nutrients than snacks such as crisps.(选择全麦面包或大米代替白面包或大米可以增加纤维的摄入量。不加盐的坚果比薯片等零食提供更多的营养)”可知,选择粗粮代替白米饭是最健康的选择。故选A。

In early August, the sandy hills along the coast of La Libertad, in northern Peru, are alive with bluish-purple fruit. The region, thought unsuitable for blueberries just over a decade ago, is now placing Peru at the forefront of the global blueberry market.
Alvaro Espinoza, an agricultural engineer, was among the first to experiment with blueberries in Peru 15 years ago, when the fruit was unknown in the country. “People called me crazy,” he recalls. Since then, Peru’s blueberry industry has been growing rapidly, from planting only a few hundred acres of blueberries in 2012 to the world’s top exporter of fresh blueberries for the last five years.
Inspired by the success of their Chilean neighbors, Peruvian entrepreneurs began exploring a local blueberry market in the early 2000s. However, conventional wisdom held that blueberries needed temperatures below 45℉ to thrive, which the Peruvian coast lacks.
Peruvian entrepreneur Carlos Gereda, a pioneer in the industry, began traveling to Chile in 2006 to learn about blueberries. On one of his trips, he brought back 14 varieties to test in Peru’s desert. It took him two years to find the right one, named Biloxi. With this variety identified, he invested $300 to start a company that became a Peruvian blueberry leader, helping Peru’s blueberry industry expand to over 49,000acres. Today, Peru exports over twice as many blueberries as its nearest competitors, with over half heading to the US, where the country supplies 40% of fresh imports.
But last year, this boom faced its first setback. A major heat wave driven by an El Nino event hit northern Peru, severely damaging blueberry crops and causing a 25% drop in production. This experience has accelerated efforts to develop new, genetically improved blueberry varieties that can thrive in even hotter climates. To create these robust varieties, scientists develop new seeds and evaluate them over years to select the best individuals. They aim to create beat-tolerant plants and produce “jumbo” berries-one inch or larger-to meet global demand.
12. Why did people initially think blueberries couldn’t row in Peru?
A. The soil was too salty for blueberries.
B. The climate was thought to be unsuitable.
C. Peru lacked the right equipment for farming.
D. Blueberries were unknown to people in the country.
13. How did Carlos Gerda contribute to Peru’s blueberry industry?
A. He promoted Pera’s blueberries in global markets.
B. He found a suitable blueberry variety for Peruvian climate.
C. He carried out researches into blueberry farming in the US.
D. He created heat-tolerant plants and produced “jumbo” berries.
14. What major challenge did Peru’s blueberry industry face last year?
A. A shortage of new blueberry varieties.
B. A new competitor entering the market.
C. Unusually hot temperature reducing the blueberry output.
D. A significant decrease in global demand for fresh blueberries.
15. What does the undealined word “robust” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Fast-growing B. Good-quality.
C. High in demand. D. Strong and adaptable.
B 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第三段中的“However, conventional wisdom held that blueberries needed temperatures below 45℉ to thrive, which the Peruvian coast lacks. (然而,传统观念认为,蓝莓需要在45华氏度以下的温度中才能茁壮成长,而秘鲁海岸并不具备这样的条件。)”可知,人们最初认为蓝莓不能在秘鲁生长是因为人们认为气候不适宜。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Peruvian entrepreneur Carlos Gereda, a pioneer in the industry, began traveling to Chile in 2006 to learn about blueberries. On one of his trips, he brought back 14 varieties to test in Peru’s desert. It took him two years to find the right one, named Biloxi. (秘鲁企业家Carlos Gereda是该行业的先驱,从2006年开始前往智利学习蓝莓种植技术。在一次旅行中,他带回了14个品种,在秘鲁的沙漠中进行测试。他花了两年时间才找到了合适的品种,即名为Biloxi的蓝莓。)”可知,Carlos Gereda找到了适合秘鲁气候的蓝莓品种,为秘鲁蓝莓产业做出贡献。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“But last year, this boom faced its first setback. A major heat wave driven by an El Nino event hit northern Peru, severely damaging blueberry crops and causing a 25% drop in production. (然而,去年,这一繁荣景象遭遇了首次挫折。一场由厄尔尼诺现象引发的热浪袭击了秘鲁北部,严重损害了蓝莓作物,导致产量下降了25%。)”可知,去年异常高温导致蓝莓产量下降。故选C。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“To create these robust varieties, scientists develop new seeds and evaluate them over years to select the best individuals. They aim to create beat-tolerant plants and produce “jumbo” berries-one inch or larger-to meet global demand.

Tom always wanted to follow in his elder sister Emily’s footsteps, no matter what she did. For instance, when Emily practiced playing the piano, he would sit beside her and randomly press the keys, even though he was in fact a total stranger to music. Each time, Emily would feel a bit annoyed, wondering if he could find something else to do.
This time, it was Tom’s first week at swimming lessons, while Emily had been swimming for two years. Emily stood by the poolside, waiting for her tum to demonstrate freestyle swimming. She frowned as she watched Tom across the pool. Couldn’t he find his own activity? “Emily, it’s your turn!” Coach Susan called out. Emily dove into the water and swam a graceful lap, earning applause from the coach and other kids.
Emily noticed that Tom had wandered away from the beginners’ group to watch her swim. “Tom!” his instructor, Coach Mark, called from across the pool. Tom seemed not to hear. Only after being called three times did he slowly return to his group. It was Tom’s turn to try floating. He looked extremely nervous. When he attempted to float, he accidentally took in some water, causing surprise and laughter among the other children.
Feeling embarrassed, Tom ran towards the changing room. He was gone from the pool area, just as Emily had wished. But this time, it didn’t feel right. After informing Coach Susan where she was going, Emily hurried to the changing room. She found Tom crying. Seeing Eaily, Tom cried even harder. “I don’t want to take swimming lessons anymore,” he sniffled.
This was Emily’s chance. If she said nothing. Tom might quit swimming forever. “Tom, everyone finds things difficult at first,” Emily said gently. “When I started swimming, I choked on water too. But you shouldn’t give up because of one mistake. We can practice together, and I’ll help you get better.”
Hearing Emily’s words, Tom eventually stopped crying and nodded. The siblings held hands and returned to the poolside, ready to face new challenges together.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Standing by the poolside, Tom appeared more relaxed but still somewhat nervous.

“You see, you can do it!” Emily encouraged.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Standing by the poolside, Tom appeared more relaxed but still somewhat nervous. Emily decided the best way to help him was by staying close. “I’ll be right here with you, Tom,” she assured him. Tom took a deep breath and eased into the water, with Emily holding his hand. Coach Mark gave a supportive nod. With Emily’s guidance and encouragement, Tom began to float more confidently. His initial fear started to fade as he felt the water’s buoyancy supporting him. Emily smiled warmly and whispered, “You’re doing great, Tom. Just keep going.”
“You see, you can do it!” Emily encouraged. Tom managed a shy smile as he floated steadily. Coach Mark and the other children cheered for him, making him feel proud and accomplished. Although his technique was not perfect, he tried his best, relying on Emily’s constant support. Over the weeks, Tom’s confidence grew, and he became more comfortable with swimming. Emily was proud of her little brother and realized that helping him succeed gave her a sense of fulfillment. They both learned that perseverance and encouragement were key to overcoming challenges.

4. What did the author initially think of writing?
A. A piece of cake. B. A ray of sunshine.
C. A nut hard to crack. D. A diamond in the rough.
5. What was the author’s main challenge in the research project?
A. Designing the magnetic component.
B. Cooperating with the research team.
C. Collecting the experimental data.
D. Writing the research paper.
6. What did the author learn from her writing and research?
A. Both require trial and error. B. Both consume time and money.
C. Both offer promotion and reputation. D. Both involve burden and stress.

B A new competitor entering the market.
C. Unusually hot temperature reducing the blueberry output.
D. A significant decrease in global demand for fresh blueberries.
15. What does the undealined word “robust” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Fast-growing B. Good-quality.
C. High in demand. D. Strong and adaptable.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
