Scientists at Georgia Tech are working to improve a musical(音乐的) robot called Shimon. Now Shimon not only plays music, but also writes the words to his own songs and sings them.
Shimon is a musical robot. Even back in 2015, it played with other musicians(音乐家) at the Kennedy Center. What Shimon could do was already pretty cool. Shimon is back with lots of new skills. Now it can write the words to its own songs, and sing them. Shimon learned to write the words for the songs the same way it learned to write music— by learning thousands of examples. Scientists train Shimon on the words to 50,000 songs. Singing the songs is another story. To give Shimon a voice(声音), the Georgia Tech team works with scientists at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain. They use AI to make the voice and it sounds very much like a man.
Shimon’s face has also new features(特点). Shimon’s mouth now moves in time as it sings. It also has eyebrows and it allows his face to show more emotion(情感).
Later this spring, the team plans to put out an album(专辑) of about 8—10 of Shimon’s songs. The album will be put on the music streaming service Spotify. There are also plans for Shimon to go on a tour with a band to play and sing its songs live.
1.What is the name of the robot?
2.Where did the robot play with other musicians in 2015?
3.What can the robot do now when it is back?

Colin Boyle was born in 1973 near Dublin, Ireland. While he was ill in hospital at age 10, his uncle gave him an old violin. He loved it right away. After he left the hospital, he practiced at his school every day after class.
One day in 1987, John Leaf, the manager(经纪人)of several successful musicians, came to Colin’s school. He was having a meeting with the headmaster when he heard Colin practicing. After the meeting, he found Colin and invited him to appear in one of the concerts he was organizing that year. Colin, however, refused Leaf’s invitation because just then he was preparing for some important school exams. Years later, Colin made it to college to study engineering. At college he met Kim O’Malley, who was studying chemistry(化学). Kim was also good at music. Being students, they didn’t have much money and they usually worked in a restaurant on weekends.
One evening in April 1992, while Colin and Kim were at work, they heard that there would be no live(现场演出的)music in the restaurant that night because the singer could not come. Colin and Kim persuaded(劝说)the owner of the restaurant to let them play. Everyone was shocked(震惊)to hear how good they were. After that, they worked hard together and improved greatly in music.

As we know music can not only bring us wonderful enjoyment, but also happiness when we are tired or sad. And many people have the habit of enjoying music when they are free. But to our surprise, one English school allows children to listen to music or even to have the TV on while they are studying, and they find it is helpful to improve the students’ grades.
According to a research at Millfield School, about 20% of teenagers work best with background music, 10% excellent when allowed to finish their work with short walks around the room while up to 80% can concentrate better if allowed to play with a small object.
The research has made the school use a very new way, encouraging students to discover which learning styles suit them best, and then let them do their homework listening to music or even lying down. Some parents don’t believe, but many are now accepting it at home where children are allowed to do their work with the television on.
“I prefer to work on the floor with music on low,” said Sam, a 13-year-old girl. “At first my parents thought I didn’t study hard, but my teacher asked them to look at my homework and when they saw it was okay, they agreed at last.”

When Wang Qi was a young adult, he used to be crazy about almost all kinds of music with his friends. But three years ago, when he was using the Internet, he found a song full of the feeling of missing the motherland. It made Wang Qi think of his hometown and the people there. He came to realize how much he actually cared about them all. Ever since then, he has been a fan of Chinese folk (民间的) music.
Folk music is a traditional kind of music in China. Many areas have their own unique styles (独特的风格). Many songs nowadays are about modern life in China, such as looking for dreams and the challenges of city life, but not about the strong traditions. However, folk music takes us back to the “good old days” when people were simple and truthful to one another. It reminds us that the best things in life are true feelings, friends, family, and the beauty of nature and the countryside.
Wang Qi hasn’t been to those famous places where folk music appeared yet, but it is his dream to go there one day. He has already read a lot about them and done some research. He knows that there are many folk music festivals in some places. There are also a lot of famous musicians and singers who have brought Chinese folk music to the world.

Jordan Benissan starts his performance by drumming. He strikes (敲击) the drums with his hands. Sometimes in the center, sometimes on the side, sometimes with a quick brush of the drum’s surface (表面).
When Benissan was a child, he didn’t have enough money to buy a musical instrument (乐器), so he called on his creativity. He brought an empty coffee can, a string (弦) from a bicycle, and a bow-shaped stick (棒). He tried to make his own instrument by hand. He began to make a hole (孔) in the bottom of the coffee can for the string to go through. Then he tied each end of the string to his wooden bow. When he played it, he sat on the floor with the can between his legs, and strummed (弹拨) the string with his fingers. The sound he made was beautiful.
Benissan uses drums of many shapes (形状) and sizes when he plays. Those different drums, he says, make up a family. His drum family has a father, a mother, an older brother, a daughter, twins, and a baby brother. In Togo, people add a bell (钟) to the drum family. These instruments, Benissan says, give music its heartbeat.
When the drum family works together, it makes a composition (乐曲) more beautiful than any of the instrument can make alone. Benissan believes that the same idea works for people.
“As a member of a community (社区) in Africa, everybody is very important,” Benissan says. “Whether you are small or big, you can do a good job for the whole group.”
Music plays an important role in Togo, which is a country of more than five million people. A master musician in Togo is a performer, a teacher, a historian, a doctor, and a voice for the community. The people of Togo use music to understand and connect to (联接) the past, back to the first musicians centuries ago. Not everyone in Togo can be a master musician like Benissan, but the most Togolese also make music a part of everyday life. When there is a community project to finish, such as building a school, people throughout the community join the work. They come not just with tools (工具) but with instruments and songs.
So the music comes together with the work and brings happiness and enjoyment to the task.
1.Why did Benissan create his own instruments?
2.How many instruments are there in the drum family in Togo?
3.What does Benissan ask the people to do for the whole community?
4.Which do you think is more enjoyable, working with music or working only with the tools? Why?(at least two sentences)
Everyone enjoys music but did you know it could improve the lives of sick kids? A famous musician once said music could change the world! In fact in Australia, a scientist Catherine, has made a music program that’s been putting smiles on the faces of kids in hospitals across the country. “It can make you happy, it can make you sad, it can make you want to get up and dance, and it can make you feel good and take away any stress,” said Catherine.
For thousands of years people have believed that music has a great effect on both the mind and the body, but it was only about 70 years ago that scientists began to study its medical effects. At that time, doctors and nurses found that playing music in hospitals helped sick soldiers feel better. Since then it’s been used to help people with brain problems learn to speak again and help other patients feel less pain and sadness. It’s even been used to help kids in schools get better marks because it allows them to relax and pay more attention.
Now music is being used in a special program called Music Therapy(治疗). It helps people improve their life in many different ways by using music. It can include: listening to music, playing instruments, singing, song writing, action songs and games.
Sophia is eleven. She got bone cancer five months ago, but playing music, learning new songs and singing have become a part of her life. “It takes my mind off feeling sick. More music, please!
Albert Einstein, a famous scientist in the early 1900s, loved to play the violin. Einstein often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem. He believed that playing the violin helped him find answers. He thought there was more to music than just being something fun to listen to. And many scientists today agree with Einstein. They find that music has a power that’s not just for making us feel happy.
Some scientists think that playing music can help your brain (大脑) work better. When you play an instrument, you are giving your brain a workout. For example, guitar players have to do many things at once when playing music. They use their eyes to read the music, their fingers to pick at the strings, and their ears to listen to the notes that they are playing. Different parts of their bodies are working together. This helps their brains get stronger and can help them pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily.
You don’t have to play an instrument to feel good. Just listening to music can also make you happy. If you’re having a bad day, music can make you feel better. When you listen to your favorite music, your brain lets out something that makes you feel good. Listening to light music can also be relaxing. A soft song can help you relax when you are unhappy. For example, many people sing quiet songs to babies, because it can help them stop crying and sleep well.
Studies also show that people feel less pain (痛苦) when they are listening to music they enjoy. When people start listening to music, they pay less attention to other things. Because people are not thinking so much about the pain, they do not feel it as strongly. People have found that the more you like the music you’re hearing, the less pain you feel!
1.When did Einstein often play his violin?
2.Why can playing music help your brain work better?
3.What do people do to help babies stop crying and sleep well?
4.When do you listen to music? Why?

Music and Behavior (行为)
Where did you go yesterday? Did you hear music at any of those places? Today most stores and restaurants play music. You might even hear music in an office or on a farm. Scientists believe that music changes the way people behave.
According to some scientists, the sound of Western classical music makes people feel richer. When a restaurant plays classical music, people usually spend more money on food and drinks. When the restaurant plays modern music, people spend less money. Without background music, people spend even less. Scientists also believe that loud, fast music makes people cat faster. It’s interesting that people would like to chew (咀嚼) their food faster when the music gets faster. Some restaurants play fast music during busy hours. This gets people to eat faster and leave more quickly. In this way, restaurants can make more money.
Some scientists think that music makes students think and learn better. They say that music helps students to be more active. It is true that students learn better when they are relaxed and listening to music can help them relax.

Seba Stephens is only 11 years old, but he’s a very talented musician. He plays the drums, bass, guitar and piano.
Seba and his family live in Memphis, USA—a place famous for music. He grew up with music all around, but his favorite was the drumming from the band. “The Police songs are full of so much cool drumming,” he says.
Before he turned three, his parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. “Drums!” he answered. His parents bought him a junior drum set (儿童架子鼓). He liked it very much. “He didn’t stop playing,” says his dad, Everett.
But soon Seba grew unhappy. He couldn’t get his junior drum set to make the sounds he had heard. Then his parents bought him a professional (专业的) drum set and let him take drum lessons.
In just a few months, his drum teacher said that Seba was learning so quickly that he needed a higher level of lessons.
Seba’s parents encouraged him to play music in other ways. Seba learned the bass, guitar, and piano. As a four-year-old child, he faced difficulties. “I couldn’t see over my drum set,” he says. He also couldn’t find a good bass that was small enough.
Seba started a band in kindergarten. By first grade, he could make money by playing music. In 2020, Seba joined a summer music program at Berklee, a famous college of music. To keep up, he had to practice for 36 hours a week.
After the summer, Seba asked his parents to home-school him so he could keep going to Berklee during the school year. He did school work in the mornings. In the afternoons and at night he worked on music. He studied with some famous drummers, and learned many drumming skills.

The power of music
No one could say that Katy Perry is an ordinary artist. Her songs are not just about sweet romance and heartbreaks, but usually have bigger and more empowering themes. Take the songs Firework (2010) and Roar (2013) for example, where Perry sings about being our own master and discovering our true value.
But actually, these themes are not daring enough, at least not for Perry. Earlier this year, she announced her new album Witness, together with a new idea for pop music. Perry calls her new style “purposeful pop”, meaning pop with a social and political message. It seems that Perry has become tired of simply encouraging people. Now, she wants to educate them politically as well.
Part of her inspiration came during the 2016 US presidential election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Perry was a very public supporter of Clinton because Trump was a candidate with a record of disrespectful behavior toward women.
The best example of Perry’s purposeful pop is probably the song Chained to the Rhythm, in which Perry criticizes people’s obsession with their own ideas and the fact they are unwilling to think more critically about the world. As the song’s lyrics say, “Aren’t you lonely? Up there in utopia. Where nothing will ever be enough. Happily numb. So comfortable, we’re living in a bubble, bubble. So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble.”
Even though the election is long over and Trump won, Perry’s political message seems to be continuing.
But when it comes to the concept of purposeful pop, it is, in fact, something a lot of pop stars have been doing for a while. Beyonce’s 2016 song Formation, for example, deals with various social problems such as the dispute between white policemen and black citizens in the US, hoping to create change through music.
“Formation isn’t just about police brutality—it’s about the entirety of the black experience in America in 2016, which includes standards of beauty, disempowerment, culture and the shared parts of our history,” wrote Jenna Wortham in The New York Times.
To singers like Perry and Beyonce, songs are not just entertainment, but part of a movement. It may have seemed strange when this concept was first introduced, but it’s on its way to becoming normal.
“The truth is, not speaking up in 2017 means you’re part of the problem. It’s no longer OK to be quiet and complacent,” wrote Shannon Carlin on entertainment news website Bustle.

Everyone enjoys music but did you know it could improve the lives of sick kids? A famous musician once said music could change the world! In fact in Australia, a scientist Catherine, has made a music program that’s been putting smiles on the faces of kids in hospitals across the country. “It can make you happy, it can make you sad, it can make you want to get up and dance, and it can make you feel good and take away any stress,” said Catherine.
For thousands of years people have believed that music has a great effect on both the mind and the body, but it was only about 70 years ago that scientists began to study its medical effects. Since then it’s been used to help people with brain problems learn to speak again and help other patients feel less pain and sadness. It’s even been used to help kids in schools get better marks because it allows them to relax and pay more attention.

3.What do people do to help babies stop crying and sleep well?
4.When do you listen to music? Why?
【答案】1.He often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem. 2.Because playing music helps our brains get stronger and can help us pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily. 3.They sing quiet songs to babies. 4.I often listen to music while doing housework because it makes me feel relaxed.

In May 2021, Seba became the youngest person ever to receive a professional certificate (证书) from Berklee. When he’s old enough, Seba hopes to go to college at Berklee. For now, he’s still practicing and playing.
1.When did Seba start to play the drums?
2.What difficulties did Seba face at the age of four?
3.How long did Seba practice a week in a summer music program at Berklee?
4.What does Seba hope to do when he’s old enough?
