My husband and I wanted to visit Cambodia for quite some time. When I was planning our trip, I knew that a visit to the historic Angkor Wat temples was definitely on our list, but I wasn’t sure about what else to visit in Cambodia.
Mrs Wendy Lee from Agate Travel did a really nice job helping us to plan our trip. We had a few conversations with her to describe what we were interested in and she came up with a suggested route and made all the arrangements. From the moment I first contacted her, 6 months before our trip to the end of it, she always replied quickly via email.
Cambodia is an amazing place with so much to see. The country is rich in culture and natural beauty. Every place we visited had something unique and special that made it stand out. Cambodian people are really kind, gentle and their hospitality (好客) is wonderful. The hotels were really good, the service outstanding and the guides and drivers knowledgeable, caring and concerned for our safety.
Of the wonderful places in Cambodia, Siem Reap temples were the most amazing experience made only better by our guide Tork Borany. He was brilliant in ensuring that we not only saw a range of sites, but we also had a lot of background information, giving us detailed explanations about the places, the historical context, the art and meaning of the symbols and writings that cover the walls and piles of the temples. He also explained to us many legends about the places we visited and the people who lived there in those times. I also must note he was particularly good with the timing of our visits to the busier places, which avoided most of the crowds. What an amazing trip!
1. What was the author’s main concern when planning the trip to Cambodia?
A. The cost of the trip.
B. The accommodation in Cambodia.
C. What to visit besides Angkor Wat.
D. How to find a good guide.
2. How did the guide improve the author’s visiting experience in Siem Reap?
A. By shortening tourists’ visiting time.
B. By sharing historical and cultural knowledge.
C. By telling jokes and making up legends.
D. By writing and drawing on the wall of the temples.
3. What is the author’s feeling about the entire trip?
A. It was full of adventures.
B. It was somehow disappointing.
C. It was nearly perfect.
D. It was challenging and tiring.

In many places, the holiday season in December can be a magical time. During this month, many cultures celebrate with festivals of lights. From Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Sydney, Australia; from Lyon, France to many cities in Japan — lights are used to lift the spirits and to celebrate. So, there are a few expressions that use the word “light”.
The first is to be a beacon of light. A beacon of light gives hope and happiness to others. If you have ever been called a beacon of light, take it as a big compliment (赞美). A person who is a beacon of light makes things better for everyone around them. These people can even cast light on the darkness in our lives. When we cast light on something, we make it better. The expression can also mean that we explain something more fully or expose some unknown parts of an issue or problem. After someone casts light on a complex or difficult issue, you might begin to see the light. If you see the light, you understand something. Often, you have realized a difficult truth.
This expression is very different from seeing the light of day — although they sound similar. When something sees the light of day, it is made available to others. For example, some people write stories and poems. But these works never see the light of day. They stay hidden in a desk drawer or notebook. To see the light of day can also mean to be born or to come into existence.
Now, let’s talk about “bad light”. Bad lighting can make even the most beautiful person look bad in a picture or video. So, it is not surprising that seeing something in a bad light means to form a bad opinion of something or someone. Sometimes our habits and attitudes can be seen in a bad light.
4. What kind of person may be called a “beacon of light”?
A. A person who is positively influential.
B. A person who is popular and wealthy.
C. A person always wearing bright clothes.
D. A person fixing the lights on the beacon.
5. What does it mean when a work never “sees the light of day?”
A. It is too bright to look at.
B. It is not made public.
C. It is only shown during the day.
D. It is destroyed secretly.
6. A person who doesn’t get on well with others may ________.
A. cast light on others
B. see the light
C. see the light of day
D. be seen in a bad light
7. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To introduce different festivals of lights. .
B. To explain some expressions related to light.
C. To discuss the importance of light.
D. To compare different cultural views on light.
A 5. B 6. D 7. B
根据第二段中“A beacon of light gives hope and happiness to others. If you have ever been called a beacon of light, take it as a big compliment (赞美). A person who is a beacon of light makes things better for everyone around them.(灯塔之光给予他人希望和快乐。如果你曾被称作灯塔之光,那么请将其视为一大赞美。一个被称为灯塔之光的人会让周围每个人的生活变得更美好)”可知,被称为“灯塔之光”的人是对他人有积极影响的人。他们会给他人带来希望和幸福,使周围的人变得更好。因此,选项A“一个具有积极影响的人”可以被称为“灯塔之光”。故选A。
根据第三段中“When something sees the light of day, it is made available to others. For example, some people write stories and poems. But these works never see the light of day. They stay hidden in a desk drawer or notebook.(当某事物见天日,意味着它被公开或提供给他人。例如,有些人写故事和诗歌,但这些作品从未见天日,它们一直被藏在书桌抽屉或笔记本里)” 可知,作品若从未 “sees the light of day”,意味着它们被藏在抽屉或笔记本里,不被他人知晓,即没有公开。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“So, it is not surprising that seeing something in a bad light means to form a bad opinion of something or someone. Sometimes our habits and attitudes can be seen in a bad light.(所以,see something in a bad light意思是对某事或某人形成不好的看法,这并不奇怪。有时候,我们的习惯和态度会被人以不好的眼光看待)” 可知,“seeing something in a bad light”表示对某人或某事形成不好的看法,一个与他人相处不好的人可能会被他人以不好的眼光看待,即D选修“be seen in a bad light(对某人或某事形成不好的看法)”符合题意。A 选项 “cast light on others(使某事更清楚或让情况变好)” 不符合;B 选项 “see the light(理解某事)” 不符合;C 选项 “see the light of day(公开、诞生)”不符合。
文章第一段“So, there are a few expressions that use the word ‘light’.(所以,有一些使用了“光”这个词的表达法)”引出话题,提到有一些与“light”有关的表达,接着分别解释了 “be a beacon of light”,“cast light on”,“see the light”,“see the light of day”以及“see something in a bad light” 等表达的含义,即本文主要介绍了一些与light相关的表达。故选B。

Do you get your best ideas when you are bored, or when you are out doing new things? What should we look for when we want to be more creative? Boredom and stimulus (刺激) may be opposites, but studies into creativity suggest that actually we might need both.
Writing for BBC Culture, Clair Thorp looks at the role that boredom plays in the creative process. Many writers and artists thinks that being bored helps them have their best ideas — JK Rowling came up with Harry Potter while on a long train journey. Thorp tells us how some researchers believe that boredom drives our brains to find something to do — leading to creative ideas. So, maybe we should take the advice of the musician Questlove and learn to ignore the distractions (消遣) on our phones to keep us in a state of slight boredom for some time.
However, before we all start planning how to bore ourselves into creativity, Sandi Mann, an academic and author, warns that too much boredom can take away the energy we need for creativity. Many experts talk about the importance of finding new experiences in order to be more creative. Actor and writer Kayode Ewumi recommends getting on a bus without purpose and seeing where you end up or learning a new musical instrument as ways to avoid writer’s block. Professor Gerard Puccio, a professor of creativity studies, believes that having to look at new things, or old things in a different light, can force us to make unusual connections and come up with creative ideas.
So, perhaps what we need is a balance — enough stimulus to make us look at things in different ways, and enough boredom to give us the breathing space to work through these thoughts.
8. What can be inferred about the relationship between boredom and creativity?
A. Boredom is harmful to creativity.
B. The more bored one is, the less creative one becomes.
C. A proper amount of boredom may lead to creativity.
D. Boredom has nothing to do with creativity.
9. What can writers do when they have no inspiration according to Kayode Ewumi?
A. Doing something aimlessly.
B. Reading a lot of books.
C. Looking at new and old things differently.
D. Ignoring phone distractions.
10. What is the main idea of this article?
A. Different ways to become more creative.
B. The importance of boredom in the creative process.
C. How to avoid distractions and become more creative.
D. The balance of boredom and stimulus for creativity.

Many experts talk about the importance of finding new experiences in order to be more creative.(然而,在我们开始计划如何让自己无聊到产生创造力之前,学者兼作家桑迪·曼恩警告说,太多的无聊会带走我们创造所需的能量。

通读全文,结合第一段“Boredom and stimulus (刺激) may be opposites, but studies into creativity suggest that actually we might need both.(无聊和刺激可能是对立的,但对创造力的研究表明,我们实际上可能需要两者)”以及最后一段“So, perhaps what we need is a balance — enough stimulus to make us look at things in different ways, and enough boredom to give us the breathing space to work through these thoughts.(所以,也许我们需要的是一种平衡——足够的刺激让我们以不同的方式看待事物,足够的无聊给我们思考的空间)”可知,文章主要讲述了无聊和刺激对于创造力的平衡。

前文“Friendship usually develops during childhood. (友谊通常是在童年时期发展起来的)”提到友谊发展于童年时期,后文“Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. (学生时代交的朋友通常会持续很长时间)”指出学生时代的朋友维持时间长,因此E项“New friends are made when you progress through school. (当你在学校不断成长时,会结交新朋友)”符合语境,说明友谊会在学校时期继续发展,承前启后,其中的school和后文的student呼应。故选E。
【12题详解】
前文“A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” (一个常见的观点是:“你可以通过了解一个人的朋友来了解他。”)”指出一个人所交往的朋友可以反映一个人的情况,后文“If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same. (如果你喜欢运动,你的大多数朋友可能都很活跃。如果你喜欢阅读和购物,你的大多数朋友也一样)”举例说明朋友间的兴趣爱好往往是相似的,因此C项“Friendship is really based on common interests. (友谊实际上是基于共同兴趣的)”符合语境,点明朋友间会有共同兴趣,承接前文,后文是对其例证。故选C。
【13题详解】
前文“Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. (有些人出于不当的理由把你称作他们的朋友)”指出有些人交友的理由是不正当的,后文“They are only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. (他们只是表面上的“朋友”,而不是内心的“朋友”)”说明这类人给出的友谊停留在表面,而非出自内心,因此B项“These people are not real friends. (这些人不是真正的朋友)”符合语境,点明这类人不是真正的朋友,承前启后。故选B。
【14题详解】
前文“True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. (无论你是富有还是贫穷,真正的朋友都在)”表明真正的朋友可以同甘共苦,后文“But they just leave when you are in trouble. (但当你遇到麻烦时,他们就会离开)”有转折,表明有些朋友不能共患难,因此G项“It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. (如果你很富有,很容易拥有很多所谓的“朋友”)”符合语境,指出人富有时会交到很多所谓的“朋友”,承接前文,和后文形成对比,其中的rich在前文有同词复现,so-called “friends”是后文they指代的对象。故选G。
【15题详解】
后文“Sometimes they might not be easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. (有时他们可能不容易找到,所以如果你有一个真正的朋友,你可以认为自己很幸运。这个朋友在任何需要的时候都愿意帮助你。他或她知道你也会为他们做同样的事)”强调真正的朋友难找,以及真朋友的种种好处,因此A项“True friends are valuable. (真正的朋友是很珍贵的)”符合语境,表明真朋友很珍贵,引出后文对真朋友的阐述,其中的True friends是后文they指代的对象。故选A。

As a sixth grader I found it hard to fit in and make friends.
Our teacher had assigned (布置) “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and picked out one. By the middle of the week, everyone had turned this assignment into a competition to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment I walked into my classroom and noticed a package with a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. What’s worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying, “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks (评论) and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean (刻薄的) things like that about someone.
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift, you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum!”
Hearing Janet’s words, I made up my mind to say sorry to her.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing Janet’s words, I made up my mind to say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes. Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.

B
A cast light on others
B. see the light
C. see the light of day
D. be seen in a bad light
7. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To introduce different festivals of lights. .
B. To explain some expressions related to light.
C. To discuss the importance of light.
D. To compare different cultural views on light.
C
B Reading a lot of books.

As a sixth grader, I found it hard to fit in and make friends.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package with a box of powder (胭脂粉).
