East China Normal University in Shanghai is home to at least 13 stray dogs (流浪狗). Every night, members of the university’s animal protection club are happy to walk the dogs. As soon as a dog-walking notice is put up in a WeChat group, the walking task will be taken in a few minutes.
“We make a plan for walking dogs at the beginning of each term, but there are always changes, so we will call for help in our WeChat group,” said Xie Yifan, a member of the club. “It seems that this year more students have joined the club, so stray dogs have become ‘rare (稀有的)’.”
The animal protection club was started in 2004. It began to raise stray dogs five years ago, with 13 dogs living in the kennel (狗舍) now. The cost comes from the club’s activity fund and income (收入) from selling creative products. Many members also use their own money because they love the animals. English Language Day is on April 23rd. It was first celebrated in 2010.
April 23rd is thought to be Shakespeare’s birthday. As the English language’s most famous writer, Shakespeare greatly influenced the language. At the time he was writing, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the English language was going through a lot of changes, and Shakespeare’s creativity with language meant he added hundreds of new words and phrases that are still used today. For example, the words “bedroom”, “fashionable” and “lonely” were all first used by Shakespeare. He also invented phrases like “break the ice”, “all our yesterdays”, and “love is blind”
About 1.75 billion people speak English worldwide — that’s around 1 in 5 people. English is commonly used as a way for two speakers with different first languages to communicate with each other. For many people, the need to communicate is much more important than the need to sound like a native speaker. As a result, language use is starting to change. For example, speakers might not use “a” or “the” before nouns (名词), or they might say “informations” instead of “information”.
Are these changes mistakes? Or part of the natural evolution (演变) of the language? Well, some people are starting to believe that the English language doesn’t just belong to native speakers and that it is used and developed by everyone in the world. There are a lot of discussions about whether there should be standard English. What do you think? If you’ re reading this, English is your language, and you should voice your opinions too.
13. What influence did Shakespeare have on English, according to Paragraph 2?
A. He wrote lots of great English works.
B. He added lots of new words and phrases to English.
C. He made more and more people begin to use English.
D. He showed the importance of creativity in English writing.
14. What is the main purpose of using English according to Paragraph 3?
A. To meet more people. B. To make more friends.
C. To communicate with others. D. To sound like a native speaker.
15. The underlined part in Paragraph 3 is used to show that ________.
A. English is changing B. English is used worldwide
C. there should be standard English D. mistakes are common in spoken English
16. At the end of the text, the writer wants us to ________.
A join the discussions B. join an English club
C. avoid some mistakes D. learn a second language

Stray dogs and stray cats were once a problem at the university. The dogs chose to live at the university because of the large green spaces and friendly students there. But they caused safety problems for people. To protect dogs and people at the university, some students then decided to build a kennel.
“Taking care of these stray dogs is not easy” Xie said. Club members need to clean the kennel, wash the dogs, and take them to animal hospitals. The cost comes from the club’s activity fund and income (收入) from selling creative products. Many members also use their own money because they love the animals. Instead of keeping them in the kennel, club members hope the stray dogs can be adopted (领养). They hope to find forever homes for them.
