Being confident isn’t just about what you know or think; confidence comes from how you feel in your body too.
If your shoulders are hunched (驼背的) and your head’s down, you feel differently to the way you feel when you’re sitting or standing straight with your head up and your shoulders back. Try it for yourself. How do you feel now?
Research has found that when you’re hunched with your arms and legs crossed and looking down, your body releases (释放) chemicals that can make you feel more stressed or worried. Young people’s coach Maria Evans says your body and brain are connected. “When you stand with your back tall, legs apart (分开) and hands on hips, your body sends the message to your mind that you feel confident and strong.”
Your body language doesn’t just affect how you feel. It tells other people how nervous or brave you feel too. Think about someone you see as confident. How do they carry themselves? Bring to mind a movie or TV character you admire for being brave or strong and picture how he sits, stands or walks. See if you can do the same.
If you’re feeling nervous, perhaps before you sit a test or do something new, you can feel more confident by taking a power posture (姿势). Sit or stand up straight with both feet planted on the ground. Stretch your arms out above your head. Keep your shoulders down and your head up to help you keep the confident feeling. Evans suggests doing a power posture for a few minutes before school. Notice how it makes you feel and how your mood has changed.
11. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A sitting straight is good B. keeping shoulders down is bad
C. feelings are important to us D. postures may affect feelings
12 What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Chemicals in your arms make you worried.
B. A correct posture makes you feel more confident.
C. Young people prefer standing with their back tall.

It’s hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool’s Day. On April 1st each year, people play tricks on each other. Classmates sometimes tie each other’s shoelaces (鞋带) to their chairs. Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surprise test that makes students feel scared before they realize it’s only a joke. Newspapers report on fake (假的) news (like “UFO” lands in New York City) and announce fake contests (比赛) (such as “Win an elephant!”).
One April Fool’s Day when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and set them free in our school cafeteria (自助餐厅). The chickens ran all around the school, in and out of classrooms and under our feet. Feathers (羽毛) were flying everywhere. Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally they caught four of them. But the chickens were wearing numbered tags (标签) around their necks, and the teachers discovered that they had only caught chickens No.1, 2, 3 and 5. Where was chicken No.4? The teachers looked and looked. They couldn’t find another chicken. After a few hours, they realized that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the first place! They’ve been tricked by the numbers on the chickens. It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool’s Day remains one of my favorite memories from those years.

A few days ago, I ran into a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, “Excuse me too, I wasn’t even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.
Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.
That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue.”
When I heard this, I thought deeply: “While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient.” I felt sad and tears began to fall.
I quietly went to Betty’s bed, “Wake up, my dear.” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them, especially the blue.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated (对待) you that way today.” And she whispered (悄声说), “Mommy, that’s okay—I still love you anyway. ” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”
That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn’t realize how important family life was. I decided to do better in the future.

One April Fool’s Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers.

An Unexpected Day
It was August 8th, a sunny day. I woke up early, planning to go biking with friends. But first, I decided to check my bike. To my surprise, it had a flat tire!
At first, I felt unlucky because it ruined my plans. I had to pump up the tire, but the pump was broken too. Frustrated, I called a friend for help.
Luckily, he arrived soon with his own pump and fixed the tire quickly. We still had time for a short ride before lunch. We laughed and enjoyed the fresh air.
The day ended with a barbecue at a nearby park. Everyone had a great time, and I forgot all about the morning’s trouble.
Looking back, I realized it wasn’t so unlucky after all. I learned that plans can change, but good times with friends are always worth it. Plus, I got better at fixing flats!
