Social media often encourages us to paint life in an idealized light, emphasizing optimism, thankfulness, and a positive outlook in all that we share.
I was the king of perfecting life. No fancy restaurant, overpriced coffee, or famous tourist destination was off-limits. I posed at the Eiffel Tower, threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, and rode a camel around the pyramids, showing I was living my best life. Little did I know my ideal was about to change.
This summer, I chose to start a journey in a manner I had never done before. While I had always traveled with loved ones, the idea of exploring a new location alone had always attracted me.
My adventure alone to Portugal did not unfold as expected. I often found myself missing my husband and son. I spent two days ill in bed, eagerly waiting for my return flight. Despite this, the photos I posted on the Internet are only the fantastic scenes. I found myself discussing the weather and landscapes to avoid admitting that my trip was not entirely delightful.
Why did it seem so forbidden to share less-than-perfect experiences? Why was I so used to turning every negative into a positive? Because we are made to feel that we should show hope, gratitude, and positivity in everything we display. While the effort to get inspiring social media stories from the most ordinary experiences is admirable, it takes “positivity” too far.
Since returning from this journey, I’ve come to understand that it’s acceptable to have bad days and that life is composed of imperfect moments. Now, as I view my online releases, I’m reminded that not every picture-perfect post reflects the complete truth. I’ve become better at dealing with the social pressure to idealize every aspect of my life and recognize the importance of sharing the whole story.
4. From paragraph 2, what may we infer about the author?
A. She spent more than she could afford.
B. She dreamed of traveling around the world.
C. She always tried to gain approval from others..
D. She was living her best life by travelling everywhere.
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s journey alone?
A. Delightful. B. Bittersweet. C. Perfect. D. Annoying.
6. Why did it seem forbidden to share imperfect experiences?
A. It was an indication of failure.
B. It challenged social conventions.
C. It made you disconnected with others.
D. It had great negative impact on society.
7. What does the last paragraph emphasize?
A. It’s showing the whole story that matters.
B. It’s a must to perfect every aspect of our life.
C. Each post online of the author reflects the true story.
D. Negative experiences play an invisible role in growth.
C 5. B 6. B 7. A

根据文章倒数第二段“Why did it seem so forbidden to share less-than-perfect experiences? Why was I so used to turning every negative into a positive? Because we are made to feel that we should show hope, gratitude, and positivity in everything we display. (为什么分享不那么完美的经历似乎是被禁止的?为什么我总是习惯于把消极转化为积极?因为我们被灌输了这样一种观念:在我们展示的每件事物中,我们都应该表现出希望、感激和积极。)”可知,分享不完美的经历似乎被禁止是因为它挑战了社会习俗。故选B项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Now, as I view my online releases, I’m reminded that not every picture-perfect post reflects the complete truth. How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to share the bill after a meal, to calculating your household bills. But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils. And girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA) found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing math s problems, 13% said they got nervous doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC she believes giving students good role models is important, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women, who love teaching maths to younger children.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says “It’s not clear why maths arouses more fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s a right or wrong answer — there’s no room for cheating — might make human more worried about unsatisfying performance.” And once we assume we’re not a “maths person”, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that articulating your fears can loosen their influence on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Ideally, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
8. What does the author think of “maths anxiety”?
A. People’s fears of maths don’t mirror their ability.
B. Nearly all people are born with “maths anxiety”.
C. Fears of maths will disappear as people grow up.
D. Maths anxiety’ only influence children at school.
9. How does PISA present its statement in paragraph two?
A. By raising questions. B. By listing figures.
C. By logical reasoning. D. By making classification.
10. What does “articulating” underlined in Paragragh 4 probably mean?
A. ignoring B. denying C. expressing D. grasping
11. Which would be the best title for the article?
A. The Gender Gap: In Maths Performance.
B. Overcoming Maths Fear: Effective Teaching Strategies.·
C. The Difficulty of Maths: Why Students Struggle?
D. Maths Anxiety: Its Origins and Solutions.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第一段“But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’ re not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.(但许多人害怕面对数字和数字的时刻,感到真正的担忧和困惑。这看起来很可怕,但这种“数学焦虑”是完全正常的,而且你并不孤单。无论如何,我们的担忧和恐惧并不一定反映我们的能力)”可知,作者认为人们对数学的恐惧并不能反映出他们的能力。故选A。
根据第二段“And girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA) found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing math s problems, 13% said they got nervous doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult.(女孩可能更容易受到影响。国际学生评估项目(PISA)发现,来自34个国家的15岁和16岁的学生中,约有31%的人说他们做数学题时非常紧张,13%的人说他们做数学作业时很紧张,近60%的人说他们担心数学课很难)”可知,PISA通过列举数字陈述其声明。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat.(心理学家一直在努力研究为什么心算会让我们大汗淋漓)”以及划线词后文“your fears can loosen their influence on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat(你的恐惧可以减轻它们对你的影响,并鼓励孩子把数学考试视为挑战,而不是威胁)”可知,本段主要关于研究心算为什么让我们焦虑,故划线词所在句是在说明解决焦虑的方法,即表达对数学的恐惧可以减轻影响,故划线词意思是“表达”。
根据第一段“But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. The world may be losing its tiny pollinators. Where were the sound of flying insects striking against the lightbulb? Even the cicadas (蝉) or crickets (蟋蟀) had stilled its instruments. Where have all the insects gone?
Our lives rely on a healthy insect population. Research shows that areas with more insect species have better and more stable pollination. As Dave Goulson, a biology professor, explains in his book Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse, about three-quarters of all crops grown by humans need animal pollination, mostly by insects. “We could not feed the global human population without pollinators,” he writes. It’s not just bees and butterflies that are important; other less attractive pollinators like flies, wasps, and soldier beetles are also in decline. These insects not only pollinate but also eat pests that damage crops.
Scientists have been warning about the decrease in insect numbers for years. The reasons are climate change, loss of habitats, light pollution, intensive farming, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers. However, it’s difficult to convince people to take action. We humans have a complex relationship with these six-legged creatures. Remember Kafka’s Metamorphosis, where a man turns into a bug, or the Victorian stories where naughty children become insects? Seen closely, even the face of a butterfly or bee is disturbing. y strange. Perhaps we’ve been pushing insects away.
Some steps may be as simple as turning off artificial light. A recent study in China found that trees in Beijing, lit by street lights at night, seem to have tougher leaves and less damage from insects. In other words, insects are probably being starved out of the area.
We should address our attitudes to insects. Those annoying flies around your food? They use simply doing what they were born for. They’re recycling. Without them we might be wondering what to do about piles of waste. Besides, they’re food for birds, and UK bird populations have crashed in recent years.
12. How does insect diversity influence our lives?
A. It makes our life less attractive.
B. It contributes to our grain increase.
C. It has no significant effect on our life.
D. It results in a decrease in animal pollination.
13. What is implied about our relationship with insects?
A. We have a negative and fearful idea of them.
B. We are completely indifferent to them.
C. We have always been very friendly towards them.
D. We rely on them and really care about their survival.
14. What is one suggested step to lessen insects decline?
A. Introducing more species to control pests.
B. Increasing the use of pesticides to protect crops.
C. Planting more trees to provide habitats for insects.
D. Turning off artificial light to reduce light pollution.
15. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To call on people to preserve insects.
B. To illustrate the necessity of recycling.
C. To show humans’ relationship with insects.
D. To describe the decrease of insects populations.
B 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据第二段中“Research shows that areas with more insect species have better and more stable pollination. As Dave Goulson, a biology professor, explains in his book Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse, about three quarters of all crops grown by humans need animal pollination, mostly by insects.(研究表明,昆虫种类更多的地区有更好、更稳定的授粉情况。正如生物学教授戴夫·古尔森在他的《寂静地球:避免昆虫末日》一书中解释的那样,人类种植的大约四分之三的农作物需要动物授粉,主要是昆虫授粉)”可知,昆虫多样性有助于农作物授粉,从而促进粮食增产。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“We humans have a complex relationship with these six legged creatures. Remember Kafka’s Metamorphosis, where a man turns into a bug, or the Victorian stories where naughty children become insects? Seen closely, even the face of a butterfly or bee is disturbing. Maybe strange. Perhaps we’ve been pushing insects away.(我们人类与这些六条腿的生物有着复杂的关系。还记得卡夫卡的《变形记》吗,里面一个人变成了虫子,或者维多利亚时代的故事里调皮的孩子变成了昆虫?凑近看,即使是蝴蝶或蜜蜂的脸也很让人不安,也许很奇怪。也许我们一直在把昆虫推开)”可知,我们对昆虫有负面和恐惧的看法。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Some steps may be as simple as turning off artificial light. A recent study in China found that trees in Beijing, lit by street lights at night, seem to have tougher leaves and less damage from insects. In other words, insects are probably being starved out of the area.(有些措施可能像关掉人造光一样简单。
故选A项。

With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can feel like one more thing on our ‘to do’ list. ___16___ The answer is ‘yes’, but it’s easier than you think-no matter who you are, or when you like to work out.
___17___ Many of us have more free time in the morning compared to later in the day, and it may therefore be easier for us to stick to a morning workout routine. A 2010 study conducted by the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found that participants who exercised in the morning, increased their physical activity throughout the day, were less distracted by food, and slept better. Exercising on an empty stomach before breakfast could burn more fat and increase metabolism (新陈代谢) too.
So, good news for early birds, but what if you’re not a morning person? Working out in the afternoon or evening also has benefits, just different ones. ___18___Also, in the afternoon and evening, your reaction time is quickest, and your heart rate and blood pressure are lowest, which reduce your chance of injury while improving performance.
But does any of this change depend on whether you’re a man or a woman? Our bodies are different, after all, so the best time to exercise may be different. A 2022 study from Skidmore College, New York, looked at exactly this question and the results showed that there are some differences. ___19___ Exercise in the morning. Want to improve your heart health and you’re a man? Evening is better for you. But, ultimately, the study found that there are clear benefits for both sexes to exercising at either time of day.
So what time is best? ___20___.
A. So does your amount of exercise count?
B. Want to lose weight and be more charming?
C. There are clear benefits to exercising in the morning.
D. It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!
E. Want to reduce your blood pressure and you’re a woman?
F. For example, your body’s ability to perform peaks in the afternoon.
G. So could exercising at certain times help maximize our fitness goals?
G 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. D
上文“With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can feel like one more thing on our ‘to do’ list. (在我们已经忙碌的生活中,找时间锻炼就像是我们“要做”的清单上的另一件事。)”提到了锻炼的问题,下文“The answer is ‘yes’, but it’s easier than you think - no matter who you are, or when you like to work out. (答案是肯定的,但这比你想象的要容易——不管你是谁,也不管你喜欢什么时候锻炼。)”是对有关锻炼问题的一个回答,选项G中exercising是关键词与上文呼应,所以G选项“那么,在特定的时间锻炼能帮助我们达到最大的健身目标吗?”能承上启下,符合语境。故选G项。
【17题详解】
下文“A 2010 study conducted by the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found that participants who exercised in the morning, increased their physical activity throughout the day, were less distracted by food, and slept better. Exercising on an empty stomach before breakfast could burn more fat and increase metabolism (新陈代谢)too. (《斯堪的纳维亚体育医学与科学杂志》在2010年进行的一项研究发现,早上锻炼的参与者,在一天中增加体力活动,更少被食物分散注意力,睡眠更好。早餐前空腹锻炼可以燃烧更多的脂肪,促进新陈代谢。)”提到了晨练的好处,选项C中exercising in the morning是关键词,与下文呼应,所以C选项“早上锻炼有明显的好处。”能概括下文内容。故选C项。
【18题详解】
上文“Working out in the afternoon or evening also has benefits, just different ones. (在下午或晚上锻炼也有好处,只是好处不同。)”提到了下午或晚上锻炼,选项F中in the afternoon是关键词,与上文呼应,所以F选项“例如,你身体的工作能力在下午达到顶峰。”能承接上文。故选F项。
【19题详解】
下文“Exercise in the morning. (早晨锻炼。)”提到了早晨锻炼,继续说“Want to improve your heart health and you’re a man? Evening is better for you. (想要改善你的心脏健康,而你是一个男人?晚上对你比较合适。)”提到了晚上锻炼,此处上下文是表对比的关系,所以E选项“如果你是女性,想要降低血压?”能与下文构成对比关系。故选E项。
【20题详解】
上文“So what time is best? (那么什么时间最合适呢?)”是询问时间,所以D选项“答案似乎是:任何时间对你来说都是最好的!”是对上文的回答,符合语境。故选D项。

What if I were to tie a ___29___ inside the handkerchief? But that would get me ____30____ upon being detected. Instead, I started ____31____ the handkerchief around itself, making small and tightly packed to prevent it from opening up.

故填have been forgotten。
故填an。

故填to serve。

故填which。

One evening, as she was heading back to her home from a park, Ms. Eleanor suddenly realized that her purse was missing. She retraced her steps, searching every corner of the park. Her heart sank with each passing moment, as the purse contained a treasured photograph of her departed husband, which she carried as a precious treasure.
As the sun set, casting long shadows along the pavements, Ms. Eleanor felt an overwhelming sense of loss and hopelessness. In the meantime, a young man named Tom was walking home from her cherished job at the community library. As he passed by the bookshop which Ms. Eleanor had visited earlier that day, he spotted something nestled in the corner of the pavement. Interested, he picked it up and discovered it to be a well-worn leather purse. Tom opened the purse, seeking some identification to return it to its owner. It wasn’t long before he saw the cash and personal belongings inside. Recognizing the significance of what he held, he decided to wait at the spot where he found the purse, hoping that the owner would return to search for it.
As nightfall blanketed the city, Ms. Eleanor, with a heavy heart, headed back to her beloved bookshop to make her last attempt to get back her purse. Her pace was slow and weary, yet her determination was strong. As she drew near to the bookshop, she noticed a figure standing under a street lamp, hold something in his hands.
“Pardon me, young person. I was wondering if you happened to come across an old purse?” Ms. Eleanor inquired in a low tone The young man’s face brightened and he was about to hand the purse to the elderly lady. Sensing the young man’s worry, Ms. Eleanor decided to confirm her ownership. She described the contents of the purse, mentioning the photograph of her late husband whom she cherished deeply. “It’s a small black and white picture, slightly worn at the edges, but it’s the most important thing.” she explained. Tom, moved by her words and the evident sorrow, handed the purse to the elderly woman. The lady was full of gratitude and asked him to accept the money in her purse for his good deed.
Tom said, “It’s my pleasure. Forget about the money.” As the whole incident progressed, a sense of relief and enlightenment enveloped him. Tom added, “It’s I who should be grateful. Your heartfelt thanks is more precious than any money. You’ve also taught me to value my beloved ones. Nice to know you, Ms. Eleanor.” With those words, Tom prepared to depart, his heart filled with a sense of accomplishment. Ms. Eleanor stood there, a satisfied smile emerging on her face as she viewed Tom’s departure, both having gained a sense of joy from their brief but meaningful interaction.

C

Ms. Eleanor, a senior lady, lives by herself in an urban area. She is a lady with a warm smile and is known for her fondness of bookshops and her habitual walks through the city’s historical region.
