You’ll need
half a lemon a cup four spoons of water
a cotton swab (棉签) white paper a light bulb (电灯泡)
What to do
1. Squeeze (挤) some lemon juice into water. Mix the water and juice.

Do you know who was described as “superhuman” by the great inventor and astronomer Galileo? It was Archimedes who solved the king’s problem of the golden crown while taking a bath. He was perhaps one of the most outstanding scientists in the world. He was a mathematician (数学家), physicist, engineer, weapon designer and inventor. He was wise in philosophy, active in mathematics (数学) and physics. He was also recognized as one of the finest engineers of his time. He was born on the island of Sicily in the city of Syracuse around the year 287 BC and died in 212 BC.
Archimedes showed great love for mathematics. He made many discoveries. For example, he determined the exact value of pi. He invented and developed methods similar to calculus (微积分) and used them to find the area of a circle and an accurate estimation (估计值) of the value of pi.
Today he is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in history. Archimedes used his mathematical skills and talents to create useful inventions. One of his most famous inventions is called the Archimedes’ Screw. It was a device that could lift water to higher levels. One of its first uses was to pump water out from a leaking ship. It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine.
Can you imagine counting the sand in the universe? Archimedes once tried to calculate the number of sand grains in the universe. Obviously, it was impossible but it goes to show that he was too smart. His intellectual curiosity and achievements to mathematics, in general, would go on to encourage other mathematicians as well. Most of his achievements were by far ahead of his time. Archimedes was in deed a genius.

China’s first 3-D printed bridge came into use in the central park in Putuo District, Shanghai on January, 2019.
The white bridge, standing 1.2 meters tall, 15.25 meters long and 3.8 meters wide, was built by Shanghai Construction Group. It took 35 days to finish building the bridge. According to Chen Xiaoming, top engineer of the Group, this bridge could stand in good condition for 30 years and stand well under the sun and rain. The bridge is very strong as it can carry 250 kilograms per square meter. That is to say, four grown-ups can walk on it at the same time per square meter.
A new 3-D robotic system played an important part in the building process. The team started planning on the system one and a half years ago. 3-D printing is eco-friendly as it needs fewer workers and does not make much dust or construction waste. If parts of the bridge become damaged, the printing system can fix them partly.
This isn’t the first 3-D printed bridge made in China. Tongji University made the first two 3-D printed bridges of China in 2017. But that pair of bridges was built as an experiment, not for use.
26. When was the first 3-D printed bridge made in China?
A. In 2019. B. In 2018. C. In 2017. D. In 2016.
27. How long did it take Shanghai Construction Group to complete building the bridge?
A. Nearly forty days. B. Less than thirty days. C. Two years. D. Thirty years.
28. How many adults can walk on the 3-D printed bridge at the same time per square meter?
A. 250 B. 30 C. 35 D. 4
29. Why is 3-D robotic printing system so important in building the bridge?
A. Because it is eco-friendly and easy to repair the bridge.
B. Because it is very strong though it is printed.
C. Because it only needs a few people.
D. Because it does not make any waste.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The bridge is very strong and will never be damaged.
B. The 3-D printed bridge first came into use in Tongji University.
C. Chen Xiaoming made the bridge.
D. The 3-D printing system is very useful and important.

One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbors came to help him before the fire could spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Tom, Grandpa!” He had forgotten who I was, but he would always be my beloved grandfather.

Migratory birds (候鸟) fly to different places during different seasons. They may fly day and night for months at a time. During this long journey, when and how do they sleep?
In 2016, some scientists studied a group of frigate birds during a ten-day flying journey. They found that frigate birds can sleep while they’re flying! According to this study, these birds take two kinds of short sleep.
The first is called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. It is the deepest period of sleep. In us humans, REM sleep can continue for many minutes. For flying birds, however, REM sleep continues for only a few seconds. Even so, this period of sleep is still very important for their brain health.
The other kind of short sleep is “half sleep”. Frigate birds put only half of their brain to sleep, while the other half stays awake. The eyes of these birds are always connected to the waking part of their brain. In other words, they sleep with their eyes open. It is still a little dangerous to take such a short sleep, though. So these birds prefer to stay awake most of the time. Before reaching land, they spend less than three percent of their time sleeping.
However, not all migratory birds sleep in this way. Many will make several stops on their way to get good rest. Some stay completely awake for their whole journey. Alpine Swifts, for example, can keep flying for nearly 200 days. There are few signs of these birds sleeping during their long trips.
The sleeping habits of birds are different from species to species. This makes the study of migratory birds very exciting for scientists. In the future, we may learn more amazing things about these animals!

阅读下面的短文,根据要求完成文后各小题。

【答案】例文
Nowadays many Chinese students no longer pay much attention to handwriting. They believe their keyboards can do the work. However, I think that handwriting is still important.
Writing is an important part of Chinese traditional culture, so practicing writing helps to inherit culture. Everyone’s handwriting has personal meaning. For example, handwritten letters can express emotions better. I also think handwriting can improve students’ handwriting skills and arouse their interests. What’s more, it can teach students to love Chinese characters.
In my view, practicing handwriting can make students improve both their bodies and minds. For middle school students, it is quite beneficial to write beautiful and generous words. So it is necessary to hold handwriting contests among students.
All in all, it’s everyone’s duty to write characters well and take action to be good at handwriting.
