A bunch of strangers showed up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching (拉伸) their arms, but most of us could barely focus. As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision-a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train fora marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions (限制) wouldn’t be easy. I stuck to working out 30 minutes a day, and I didn’t disturb (干扰) my normal routine. Instead, I had to be faced with the tough work of being more creative in my spare time, thus breaking some bad habits.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting” and “doing” are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that’s hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of accomplishment (成就), too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
4. What was the author’s wrong decision?
A. Going to the gym early.
B. Training for a marathon.
C. Eating a lot the previous night.
D. Stopping being lazy for a change.
5. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Some of the author’s bad habits.
B. Some ways of the author’s killing his spare time.
C. The importance of sticking to the normal daily routine.
D. The difficulty of the author’s keeping on with the workout plan.
6. What does the underlined word “sabotage” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. stop. B. hear. C. improve. D. recognize.
7. What did the author learn from the workout challenge?
A. Eating healthy food is more important than exercising.
B. Overcoming a challenge could bring good feelings to him.
C. It’s more important to see what he likes than just feel it.
D. There was no need to feel guilty about things he disliked to do.
C
In case you are considering starting a journey, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (出发) time. It is surprising how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50, but the person at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local money in cash (现金). Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. You can imagine how terrible I felt at that moment.
The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who traveled in heavy suits and raincoats in May when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.
8. Where is the author most probably from?
A. Britain. B. The USA. C. Italy. D. Greece.
9. What did the author do when he found he had no dollars to pay the taxi driver?
A. He tried to pay by credit card.
B. He offered to pay in pounds.
C. He waited for the bank to open with the driver.
D. He asked the driver to give him a free ride.
10 What’s the weather in London generally like in May?
A. Warm and dry. B. Cold and dry. C. Hot and wet. D. Cool and rainy.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How to make life easier. B. How to ensure safety during your trip.
C. How to be well prepared for a trip. D. How to enjoy ourselves on a trip.
D
Due to social events in recent years, the relationship between social media and teenagers mental health has been under heated discussion.
On Sept 30 a British court decided that content on social media platforms contributed to the depression of 14-year-old Molly Russell. Russell interacted with 2,100 posts related to pessimistic, self-harm in the six months, leading up to her depression, reported the Observer website.
The correlation has also been proved by science. A study in 2019 showed that the frequent use of social media by teenagers can lead to a decrease in their mental health.
So, how can we make sure that teenagers won’t get hurt while using social media? Chan, 18, from the University of Macao shared her experience. Chan said that she once came across short videos romanticizing mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. She immediately reported them to the platform.
But she said that the users’ power to regulate videos is still limited. “It is ultimately the responsibility of the social media platforms to filter out content that is potentially harmful.” She also noticed that the age of social media users has become increasingly younger. Society should pay attention to this, she said. “Since it’s not possible to cut off access to social media for younger users, why not introduce a ‘supervision mode’ with which parents can regulate the content to be viewed by teenagers beforehand?” she said.
Wu Chengyu, 18, studies at Tianjin Experimental High School. He said that several years ago he came across a game that lures teenagers to self-abuse and depression. He quickly chose to ignore it so he wouldn’t be influenced. This is the same way he reacts when exposed to negative content on social media.
In Wu’s opinion, teenagers today should improve their social media literacy (素养), telling real from fake and good from bad. “Also, everyone can be a content creator on social media.” he said, “We should all strengthen our awareness of ethics”.
12. What led to Russell’s depression according to a British court?
A. Her interaction with others online.
B. Negative information on social media platforms.
C. Short videos she watched on the Internet.
D. Her addiction to online posts.
13. Which of the following statements does Chan probably agree with?
A. The number of younger Social media users should be limited.
B. Parents should monitor the content to be viewed by teenagers in advance.
C. A supervision mode ought to be introduced by parents.
D. It is the responsibility of the society to romanticize mental illnesses.
14. Who should be ultimately responsible for removing negative content according to Chan?
A. Parents. B. Social media platforms
C. Content creators. D. Social media platforms.
15. What does Wu suggest teenagers should do?
A. Use social media wisely. B. Reduce social media usage.
C. Stay away from online games. D. Learn more about social media.

“Mommy, don’t go,” my threeyearold son screamed as I walked to the door. My fifteenyearold leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms folded across his chest, not screaming, but glaring at me as I pulled his little brother off my legs.
“Are you mad at me too?”
“You spend all your time taking care of other people’s kids, but what about us?” Dylan left angrily.
I was shocked and a little hurt. How could my own child not understand that the work I was doing was saving lives? Then the answer hit me. He didn’t know, because he had never seen what Healing the Children actually did. Dylan had heard the stories of sick children, but had never once looked into the eyes of a child and understood the hard truth—that without our help, the children would likely die.
“Get dressed. You are going with me,” I said.
I spent the drive explaining the case of Hector to my son, who pretended to ignore me the entire time. “He’s seven, only weighs thirty pounds and is very sick. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which could kill him. It is a miracle (奇迹) that he is still alive.”
I went on to explain that it took a team of volunteer medical staff to get Hector to the hospital from his remote village and care for him while he was there. Still, Dylan seemed unimpressed.
We stopped at a convenience store for water and snacks. Dylan had one large and one small Slurpee He said the small one was for Hector. I doubted whether the little guy would be able to drink it, but remained silent. This was the first interest Dylan had shown in being there. I wasn’t about to ruin it.
I stopped at the nurses’ station to check on Hector’s progress while Dylan went to his room. Our patient was recovering physically, but the nurse was concerned that Hector was struggling emotionally. She said, “Kids usually bounce back fast, but he hardly speaks and never smiles.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Imagine my surprise when I heard laughter from Hector’s room
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the way home that night Dylan asked me several times whether Hector would be okay.

根据第一段中“As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision — a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. (当我正在为昨晚的错误决定——一顿大餐——而精疲力竭时,我看到了一张关于健身房21天锻炼挑战的海报,我立即报名参加了)”可知,昨晚作者做了一个错误的决定:吃了一顿大餐,因此作者的错误决定是前一天晚上吃得很多。故选C项。
2.主旨大意题。根据第二段中“It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions (限制) wouldn’t be easy. (在纸上承诺很容易,但三周的推荐锻炼计划和饮食限制并不容易)”可知,将承诺写在纸上是很容易的,但是坚持三个星期的锻炼和饮食限制并不容易,因此该段的主要内容是作者坚持锻炼计划的困难。故选D项。
3.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. A. stop阻止;B. hear听到;C. improve改善;D. recognize认可。 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them.

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards it is still important to have some local money in cash (现金).
I feel sorry for some of my workmates who traveled in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.
10. What’s the weather in London generally like in May?
A. Warm and dry. B. Cold and dry. C. Hot and wet. D. Cool and rainy.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How to make life easier. B. How to ensure safety during your trip.
C. How to be well prepared for a trip. D. How to enjoy ourselves on a trip.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第三段中“The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead.( 去旅馆的唯一方法是乘出租车,但因为我没有美元,所以我提出用英镑代替。)”

C Content creators. D. Social media platforms.
15. What does Wu suggest teenagers should do?
A. Use social media wisely. B. Reduce social media usage.
C. Stay away from online games. D. Learn more about social media.
B 13. B 14. D 15. A

Para. 1:
Imagine my surprise when I heard laughter from Hector’s room. I entered and found Dylan sitting on the edge of Hector’s bed wiping pieces of frozen drink from Hector’s mouth. Both boys were giggling and Hector was apparently enjoying the company. I spent the rest of the day speaking to doctors and watching my son playing with the special little boy. It was truly amazing to watch them interact, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Perhaps to the two of them it was.
Para. 2:
On the way home that night, Dylan asked me several times whether Hector would be okay. I told him this boy would get well but he had a hard road ahead of him. My son seemed to be lost in thought for a while. Then he declared his decision to join Healing the Children as a volunteer to help Hector and other children. I never thought that a moody teenager would take up the voluntary work and never again complain about his mother’s crazy work schedule.
