Bhutan is one of the world’s most mysterious(神秘的) countries.Visiting it can be challenging, but there’s a new drive to finally cross it off the bucket list in 2022,as its breathtaking Trans Bhutan Trail(小径)will be reopening to travelers for the first time in 60 years.
According to the Bhutan Canada Foundation—the main donor to the restoration project—the 250-mile route connects nine districts,28 local governments, one national park and 400 historic and cultural sites.Travelers who follow the entire trail route will cross 18 major bridges and climb 10,000 stairs. It will be possible to walk or mountain bike there.
“This is a community-based project in both its building and operation which will restore an ancient cultural treasure and provide a sustainable, net zero carbon experience in the country for travelers,” says Sam Blyth, chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation.“The Trans Bhutan Trail also reflects the country’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness and will allow the children of Bhutan to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors.”
The trail’s westernmost point is the town of Haa,which is near the border with Tibet,China. The easternmost point is Trashigang, near the border of India’s Arunachal Pradesh state.According to a representative for the Bhutan Canada Foundation,an ambitious walker could cover the whole trail in about a month, but most tourists will likely enjoy shorter parts of the trail on three-,four-,or seven-day trips.
Due to its “high value, low impact” tourism strategy,Bhutan averages just a few thousand visitors in a typical year.As part of its aim to avoid overtourism, the country charges a mandatory(强制的) $250 per day fee, which includes land transport, accommodations, food and guide service. The cost makes it somewhat prohibitive for many people to visit. And walkers to the Trans Bhutan Trail will have to apply for a permit. They can do this beginning in April.

At the foot of Egypt’s Sinai mountains, once a small fishing town,Dahab is now one of the Red Sea’s top diving resorts(潜水胜地),attracting a lot of nature lovers. It also provides a stress-free seaside atmosphere where visitors can just sit back and enjoy its waters. There are affordable accommodations, tour operators, multicultural restaurants and cafes.
Dahab is also one of the few places in the area with Internet access, making it attractive to remote workers looking for a peaceful “office” by the sea.Rahma Zein, who chose to go to Dahab on the advice of friends, said,“On a normal day,I wake up,make breakfast,go for a free dive, hang out on the beach, take a hike, eat and then sleep.” She added,“In between sessions,I make phone calls and do my work.”
Located on the edge of the Red Sea,the Blue Hole is one of Dahab’s most famous sites and one of the world’s most famous diving sites.Going down to a maximum depth of 328 feet and easily accessible from the shore, the Blue Hole is not influenced by the currents,so its waters are relatively calm. The conditions here are perfect for free divers,as well as advanced divers looking to push their limits in a race.
To reduce the traffic here,a local group of divers have created an underwater museum filled with giant statues(雕像) made of recycled materials. The most impressive statue is a life-sized elephant weighing 700 kilograms which has gained the attention of countless tourists.
There are also limitless options in shallower waters for those who want to avoid crowded diving spots.Travelers can hike or ride camels to Ras Abu Galum National Protectorate, which covers 400 square kilometers of coastline and offers a better view of sea life.

Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself during your winter vacation? In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan Province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel—an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu’s type of work—has attracted more attention.
Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others, according to Wise Tour,an online provider of tourist information.
It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation.Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s,when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas(VSO),an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself depicts, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years.Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living.Yang Yan,a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons.By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve.Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban dwellers (居民) to get a taste of rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution. In this way,as Yang comments, travelers can catch some relief from their busy lives, while rural communities also benefit by receiving more customers for local tourism industries and temporary high-quality labor.

With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train?Compared to other alternatives,it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 1 But no matter when you travel,it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.
Use a travel agent.Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations.A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. 2 Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 3 In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week,so missing yours can be a disaster. 4 Note:The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun. 5 Read a book, knit,do a crossword puzzle,or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do,divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you’re going 67.92 mph.
A.Train trips aren’t for impatient types.
B.You’ll have views from both sides of the train.
C.The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D.That’s particularly true during busy summer months.
E.You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F.Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G.He may also book you in a sleeping car that’s right next to the diner.
2.答案 G
解析 根据下文“Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.”可知,你会节省从卧铺到餐厅的距离,G项中“book you in a sleeping car that’s right next to the diner”与下文对应,因此推断“他可能还会给你预订餐厅旁边的卧铺车厢”符合语境。故选G。
5.答案 A
解析 根据下文“To calculate your speed as you do...”可知,本段讲述如何度过乘车时间,A项中讲到火车旅行不适合没有耐心的人,与下文要计算速度,用不同的方式打发时间对应。故选A。
