话题:全球首个红树林中心落户深圳
难度:★★★★☆ 正确率:___ /4
Over the last 20 years, China has put a lot of effort into
protecting wetlands. All that hard work has paid off. The
world’s first international mangrove (红树林) center was set
up in Shenzhen. Why do mangroves matter? And why did
Shenzhen stand out?
31
Mangroves play an important role in the world. They take
CO from the air and then store it for thousands of years.
Studies show that they can hold five times more CO than
rainforests. People often call mangroves “coast guards”. As
global warming raises sea levels, these trees could help protect
coastal cities from flooding. Besides, they can protect the city
from big wind. What’s more, mangroves offer living places to
animals. Many birds, for example, stop there during their
migrations (迁徙).
Mangroves cover an area of about 14.8 million hectares
(公顷) worldwide. However, they’re disappearing from many
places. China is one of the few countries where mangrove areas
are growing. Their total area has risen from 22,000 hectares in
2001 to 29,200 hectares today. Shenzhen is home to 296.18
hectares of mangroves and has put in a lot of work to protect
them in recent years. Take Futian Mangrove Ecological Park for
example, where nearly 100,000 birds rest in the winter. Among
them, there are more than 20 rare or endangered species.
“Building the Shenzhen center is important,” said a Chinese
official. “It serves as a platform for China to work with other
countries in protecting mangroves.” Shenzhen isn’t going to stop
there, however. It plans to build itself into an international
wetland city by 2035. By then, half of its wetlands will be
protected.
