Oceans make up about 71% of the earth’s surface. They’re
important to the health of the earth and human beings. However,
just 5%of the ocean has been explored and less than 10% has
been mapped by modern technology. While we can send
satellites (卫星) millions of miles into space, then why has
so little of the ocean been studied?
38
One reason is that the ocean is not as simple as it seems
to be. We’ve always been able to study the ocean’s surface. But
we’ve just started looking into the deep ocean within the past
thirty years. Satellites have helped us study the ocean’s surface.
If we want to dig deeper, more advanced (高级) technology
is needed. But when we reach the deep ocean about 200 meters
or more below the ocean’s surface, we will enter complete
darkness. At these great depths, we will not be able to see
anything. It’s also very cold and the pressure is deadly.
39
As you can see, deep sea exploration is tough. But there is
still hope to learn more. Many organizations are making efforts
in ocean exploration by supporting scientists to study unknown
and little-known areas. It’s hard to protect our ocean if we
know so little about it. And there are many reasons why we
should protect it. The ocean produces more than half of the
world’s oxygen (氧气). It also influences climate, provides
food andmedicine as well as supports trade among nations
around the world.

Do you often compare yourself with other people? Are you
happy when you compare yourself with your friend?
Comparisons can help to make decisions but they can also pull
you into a comparison trap (陷阱).
46
Why is it so easy to compare yourself with others?
Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football
or how many books you’ve read, it’s easy to compare yourself
with someone else. Scientists say it helps humans learn from
each other, live happily together and achieve more. Although
comparing can be good for you, it’s not always helpful and you
can find yourself stuck in a comparison trap. This is when you
always compare yourself with others and base(基于) your
feelings on how well they seem to be doing.
47
▲
Becky is a child therapist (someone who helps children
understand their feelings). She tells The Week Junior that
comparisons can make us feel good and bad about ourselves.
“Comparing up” means seeing someone doing better than you
and using that to push yourself and try harder. However, she
says, “Sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself
and knock your confidence.”
48
“Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like
they’re not doing as well as you. “This might make you feel
you’re doing well,” says Becky, “but it can also stop you
wanting to improve.”
49
Get away from the comparison trap
“If your feelings depend on what other people are doing,
spend time with friends who make you confident but not
compare yourself with them,” suggests Becky. Find some people
that make you laugh or show you lovely places. Finally, pay
attention to your own success and how you can improve. “The
best person you can compete with is yourself,” says Becky.

Safety tips about floods
Deadly flooding has swept China’s northern
provinces this summer, causing many
67
losses such as a number of people died and houses were
destroyed (破坏) by floods. Like many other natural disasters,
floods can happen with little or no warning. Flash floods move
quickly and have strong currents (水流). They are known to
take down buildings and trees. Besides, floods can cause power
cuts (停电), traffic jam and other problems. But the flood
itself isn’t the only problem to deal with. After the flood, it
may have deadly results, as it may not be easy to send food
and water to the areas where floods happen.
68
So in the face of a flash flood, what should we do to save
ourselves?
*Don’t use bridges that rapidly moving water is crossing,
as floodwater can cause bridges to break.
*Listen to emergency broadcasts (应急广播) for useful
information. If told to move to another place, do so.
69
*Stay inside the car if the car is caught in the fast moving
water. Only get out if the water begins to flood the car itself,
and then move to the roof (顶部) of the car.
*Stay away from power lines (电线), as they are
knocked down during the strong storms.
Besides, here is something to keep in mind after a flood.
70
*Do not use floodwater to wash food or drink it.
*Use only bottled or clean water for drinking or cooking.
*Return to your home only after the government has said it
is safe.

When I first went into the middle school, I was too shy
to communicate with others. And I was afraid to ask others
questions that I couldn’t work out. I turned to my parents
for help and they gave me useful suggestions. They told me
that I needed to be brave to talk to others and make new
friends. I tried my best to follow their suggestions and
finally I made it.
Now I understand that I need to learn how to get over
difficulties by myself with confidence.
