We all know that there are two versions of written Chinese
characters. People in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan use
traditional characters. And on the Chinese mainland we write
with simplified(简化的)ones.
36
However, at this year’s Chinese People’s Political
Consultative Conference (CPPCC), well-known film director
Feng Xiaogang suggested that schools should teach students 50-
200 of the most meaningful traditional Chinese characters. “It is
not to get rid of. .the simplified characters, but to let the
children know about the most important part of traditional
Chinese culture,” said Feng.
37
Take two simplified characters as an example, “亲”
(meaning dear, or relatives) and “爱” (meaning love). The
traditional version for “亲” is “親”, which has an extra “見”
meaning “see”; while “爱” is written as “愛” in the traditional
way, which has an extra “心” meaning “heart”. “Love needs
‘heart’ and relatives need to ‘see’ each other,” Feng said. “The
simplified versions of these characters have lost their human
touch.”
38
“Learning traditional Chinese will also help people better
understand Chinese historical works written in traditional
characters,” said Lu Bo, the editor-in-chief of Macao Daily
News. However, many people think it not necessary to do so.
They say simplified characters are easier to learn and write, and
people have got used to them.
39
“Traditional Chinese characters are too hard for beginners,
and students don’t have the language environment outside the
classroom,” Zhang Jian, a Guangzhou primary school teacher,
told the Yangcheng Evening News. “Moreover, the simplified
characters come from the traditional ones, which means they can
also promote and keep traditional culture,” said Chinese
character expert Dang Huaixing.

Artificial intelligence, or AI in short, is the science of
giving computers and machines ability to think and work like
humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool
technologies.
45
AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read
faces. As a result, facial recognition is used a lot in the world.
Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals(罪犯).
Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. AI
also checks the ID of ride-hailing(网约车)drivers and lets
people pay for things with their faces.
46
AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to
be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at
passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars
don’t have this ability. Carmakers are testing a light
47
signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can
show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless
car is yielding(让路), it will flash two white lights side to
side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is
about to speed up.
48
Service robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine
this—you come back home from school and your robot
housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he
teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher.
Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future,
more and more service robots will become good home helpers.
49
AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even
replace us in many jobs.

第三节(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(34至37题每
题答案不超过3个单词,38题须用完整句子回答。)
Bottled water or tap water?
Water plays an important role in our daily life. It makes up
about sixty percent of your body weight. Most of us get our
water at a low price from the taps(水龙头). But some people
prefer bottled water, even though it costs more.
65
Bottled water first appeared in the United States in the
1760s. A company called Jackson’s Spa sold bottled water. It
said that the water could be good for people’s health. Since
then, bottled water has been more and more popular worldwide.
66
Why has bottled water become so popular? Well, this may
have something to do with people’s worries about the purity
(纯净) of tap water. According to one survey, 63 percent of
Americans worried a lot about the safety of their drinking water.
67
However, research suggests such worries are unnecessary.
For most families, bottled water isn’t better than tap water. In
fact, almost half of all bottled water comes from the tap. When
it comes to taste, most of us can’t tell the difference. Once a
blind taste test was done and only a third of the taste-testers
were able to correctly pick out which one was from tap water.
68
Making bottled water, however, requires a lot of things.
Plastic bottles are usually used only once before being thrown
away. Besides, more water goes into the making of a bottle of
water. One study found that companies usually use 1.39 litres
(升) of water to make one litre of bottled water.
69
It’s time to change your mind! Bottled water is more
expensive. However, it isn’t much better than the water you get
from your kitchen tap.
