Cedar Point was an amusement park in Ohio I had been expecting to visit as a child. We lived close to the park, so I often heard the screams of people on the roller coaster, saw the tired kids with their parents when they left. Sometimes, I looked wistfully at the lights through my window at night.
When I was nine, my grandmother managed to save a little bit of money here and there and took me there one day that summer. I yelled, excitement bubbling inside me. As we arrived at the park for the first time, kids were everywhere, eating popcorn (爆米花) and blowing bubbles. My eyes widened in delight at the scene. I wanted to do all those things, but deep down, I knew we didn’t have enough money. We could only afford to buy a ticket only for one ride for fifteen minutes. I pulled my grandmother toward the ticket window to buy a ticket for the carousel (旋转木马).
It was exactly as I had imagined, straight out of a movie. My grandmother smiled fondly and leaned down, giving the ticket to the ride operator, Mr Salas. Letting go, I rushed to the ride, stopping only to pick which horse to sit on. They were all so beautiful, coming in different colors with’ different expressions ‘on their plastic faces. To me, it felt like the decision of a lifetime.
“Come on, sweetie! The ride is going to start!” my grandmother called out, laughing at my indecision. Seeing that, Mr Salas also smiled warmly. Finally, I picked the horse with the pink hair and blue saddle. In the following minutes, I was absorbed in enjoying the ride, forgetting my family was struggling. My grandmother waved each time the ride passed her by. Mr Salas watched me from a distance.
Sadly, the carousel ride ended much too quickly. My grandmother was waiting and took my hand. I got down from the horse unwillingly, feeling bittersweet.

I was at the back of a group of eight horse riders when one of my fellow safari (观兽旅行) camp guides called my name, nodding to the spot behind me. I turned to see a male lion, fully grown, not 10 metres away.
I’d been working as a guide at the safari camp in Botswana for a year and had seen lions a few times, usually in the heat of the day. Guests paid to come on guided rides between tented camps 20 miles apart. It was a very remote area. We left at 7 am that morning; it was three hours later when the lion appeared.
Just as I saw it, the horses ran wildly, leaving riders hanging on as the lion began its chase (追逐). I wasn’t in control of my horse, Acaba, which was heading into a much thicker bush, away from the path and the rest of the group. I realised that the lion had chosen to drive Acaba away from the others.
I thought we were going to die together. I screamed in pure panic. Suddenly, Acaba ran into a really thick bush and stopped without control, throwing me into a bush. By the time I got myself out of the low woody plants, the lion was killing him.
Unbelievable! Acaba hid me in the bushes and left himself in extreme danger! It protected me! Scared... shocked... moved... my mind went blank. I was only two metres away! Acaba was on the ground, feet in front of him. He tried to push himself up. But the lion was on top of him, covering his body entirely, his front feet around Acaba’s neck.
I seized a device hanging around my neck, which is known as a bear banger. It has a spring, and when you pull the trigger (扳机) the spring fires off containers that explode when they land. It’s like a small firework but as loud as a shotgun.
Somehow my panic died down. I found myself moving closer to Acaba and the lion.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Upon Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track (足迹;踪迹) so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine (松树) trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Jasmine lived on a small farm with her parents and her sister Grace. They were poor and made a living selling animals, but they treated the creatures very kindly. Jasmine was quite a help to her parents. She loved riding horses and caring for them. Of all the horses, Madeline was her favorite. She was a white horse with beautiful locks of golden hair. She was the swiftest horse in the stable. Jasmine always dreamt of riding Madeline in a race and winning it. Life was harder for the poor family recently because losses had occurred in the business. All they could do to support their daily life was to sell a horse. Jasmine was not at all happy with this idea. She thought about what to do for a long time, to see if she could come up with an alternative solution.
One day, she saw an advertisement in the local newspaper for a horse race. The winner of the race would get $1,000! She thought that she and Madeline could enter the race. She told Grace about her idea and Grace was also happy with it. They went to the race organizer and added Madeline’s name to the list of horses running in the race. He told them that the race was in eleven days’ time.
The next day, during a routine check, the two girls found Madeline seemed to have lost the color from her face. “She looks pale and unwell,” Grace said, with a worried look. She began stroking her mane (鬃毛). “You’re right, Grace. Go and call mother while I get Madeline some water,” said Jasmine. Grace ran off to inform their mother. Meanwhile, Madeline was getting paler. Grace returned shortly with their mother, who phoned a vet immediately. The vet came quickly and after checking Madeline over, said that she was ill. The whole family was very worried as Madeline’s health continued to get worse. She would hardly eat anything. Madeline’s situation broke Jasmine’s heart. Her only wish was that Madeline would soon get better.

“Mom, where do you suppose they are?” my ten-year-old son Danny asked for the twentieth time as he stared out of the window at the range (牧场). “They” were our horses, Ginger, and her three-year-old son, Charcoal, both of whom had been missing for days.
Our range and woods offered plenty of grass for six horses. However, spring thunderstorms during the past ten days had forced the nearby river out of its banks. The other horses had come to the barn (畜棚) during the downpour, but not Ginger or Charcoal.
When the rain stopped, I took Spot, our dog, to do some first-hand searching. We went through trees and brush in wet lowlands near the river. All my calling and Spot’s smelling were in vain.
The next morning, the sun struggled to shine through gray clouds, but dampness filled the air. Suddenly, Danny shouted, “Mom, come quick! There’s Ginger!” The horse stood at the range gate crying impatiently and moving back and forth as if to say “Follow me”.
“Hurry, Danny,” I said, “get the pot with some oats (燕麦). I will bring a rope.” Ginger walked in front and we followed. “I see him! I see him!” Danny shouted. Charcoal was lying on his side, not moving. His right back leg was badly injured.
“Oh, Mom. How long do you think he’s been lying here with no food and nobody to care for him?” Tears formed in Danny’s blue eyes. “Probably several days, but we’ll never know. Ginger took care of him, though, protecting him from attacks from hungry wolves or other wild animals,” I said.
“What can we do now?” Danny asked anxiously. “There’s no way to drive a vehicle down here in all this mud.” “We just have to get him up and lead him out,” I said, keeping my voice confident. “Afterwards, we’ll have to call the vet (兽医) out.”

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. I moved to a now town with my father, far from my old family and friends, I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.
Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(竞技场). We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.

A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body. I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马), had to be sold.
Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛), an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.

We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with case.

I am a photographer running a studio in the inner city. We are well known for our children's portraits (肖像),and we range from high-end portraits for modelling jobs to fun sibling photos and birth announcements. We do a bit of everything; as such, we are extremely busy, and it states on our website that we do not accept walk-ins. We are usually booked up six months in advance. One day, ten minutes before closing, a mum walked in with a young girl around six or seven behind her. I internally sighed.
The mother said:"Hello. I know you're closing soon, but I have a special favour to ask.”
At that point the little girl peeked around her mother's legs and I was lost for words. Under her thick winter coat and hat, she was skinny with huge dark circles under her eyes. From what I could tell, she had no hair, and a tube taped to her cheek that fed into her nose. It was immediately clear this kid was very, very sick.
The mother said again, nearly teary. " My daughter saw one of your photos taped to the wall at the hospital. She really loves unicorns (独角兽)and the photo had a girl photoshopped onto a horse. I know you're booked up, and it's months before the next appointment, but…”
At that point she actually started crying. I realised that our next available appointment was probably way too far away for this particular kid. The little girl squeezed her mother's hand. I am a very big guy with a beard, but I'm not ashamed to say I needed a minute before I spoke.
I smiled and said with the softest voice I had ever had : ” Ahh, that's just for regular customers I I've been waiting all day to take a photo of someone as beautiful as you! What's your name, sweetheart?"

【答案】
At that moment, Mr Salas approached us with a warm smile on his face. He asked why we didn’t continue to ride the carousel. My grandmother explained to him that we only had enough money for one ride. He nodded in understanding. But then, his eyes held a glimmer of kindness and understanding as he looked at me and my grandmother. He said gently, “Excuse me, ma’am. I couldn’t help but notice the joy on your granddaughter’s face as she rode the carousel. It’s moments like these that make this job worthwhile.” Having said that, he went to the ticket window.
After a while, Mr Salas returned, with an all-inclusive ticket for Cedar Point for the entire day. He gave it to us and explained that with the ticket, I would have unlimited access to all the rides and attractions in Cedar Point for the entire day. When my grandmother took the ticket from Mr Salas, tears of gratitude filled her eyes. “Thank you,” my grandmother whispered, her voice choked with emotion of gratitude. I was more than delighted that I was able to ride the carousel as much as I wished that day. Moreover, Mr Salas even offered to buy me popcorn and blowing bubbles. By the time this day ended, we expressed our gratitude to Mr Salas again for his kindness. It was the sweetest memory I had in my childhood.

【答案】
I pulled the trigger, and it worked. The loud bang echoed through the bush, scaring the lion momentarily. It paused its attack on Acaba, giving me a brief window of opportunity. Without hesitation, I fired another round, hoping to distract the lion further. This time, it seemed to have the desired effect. The lion released its palms on Acaba and turned its attention towards me, roaring fiercely.
One of the guides gave me a horse, and I planned to find Acaba. With anxiety flowing through my veins, I mounted the horse and rode back to where I had last seen Acaba. I approached cautiously, aware of the danger but determined to save Acaba. As I got closer, the lion backed into the bush, leaving Acaba wounded but unexpectedly alive. With trembling hands, I helped Acaba to his feet, overwhelmed with gratitude for his bravery and loyalty.

【答案】Paragraph 1
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to run after it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farm house in time for supper.” I thought to myself. After a series of useless attempts to find a way out, we felt hungry and tired.
Paragraph 2
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of us in finding a way home, for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost breaking down when my father said, “Don’t worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally, we found the river and got back to the house along it. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Whenever Jasmine had time, she went to check on Madeline and take care of her. Jasmine would massage Madeline’s ears, scratch her neck and pat her head before feeding her some fresh water and hay. Slowly but surely, the white horse regained her appetite and strength. A week later, she was fully recovered from the illness. Jasmine was more than happy to see Madeline looking healthy again, but she was not sure whether or not Madeline could participate in that race. There were only three days left before the race took place. Jasmine asked Grace what she thought, and Grace encouraged her to go for it. She and Madeline trained hard within the limited time.
On the day of the race, Jasmine headed to the race course with Madeline. As the race began, she stroked Madeline’s neck and the horse galloped along the course. After a strong start, they were passed by several competitors and were soon way behind. Halfway through the race, they sped up and narrowed the gap. In the final lap, they drew level with the leading pair and passed them right before the finish line. What a narrow victory! Everything felt like a dream as Jasmine accepted the prize money. She placed her arms around Madeline’s neck and wept tears of joy. “We’ve made it!” she choked, “Now we don’t have to be apart anymore!”

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
With our encouragement and the attraction of oats, Charcoal struggled and managed to stand up. Though his eyes were dull with pain, he was brave enough to respond to our efforts. This was surely the force of life over death! Danny, with the pot, marched up the rocky slippery path through the woods, and I steadied injured Charcoal, encouraging him to follow. The hike which was ordinarily just 30 minutes now took over two hours. Charcoal could only hop with three legs for a few yards, and then rest, while we encouraged him to continue. Finally, our barn came into sight.
Paragraph 2:
Upon arriving at the barn, Danny started creating a bed for Charcoal. I hurried to phone the vet to come as soon as possible. After cleaning Charcoal’s wounds and medicating him, the vet told us, “His injury would heal, but you’ll need to treat the leg every day for several weeks, maybe longer.” He showed Danny exactly how to apply the medicine and cover the wounds. When I was watching my son carefully tend Charcoal, a thought just naturally came to mind: Bad things may happen somewhere, but love is everywhere, not only between humans, animals, but also between humans and animals.

【答案】
My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.
As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地).

My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy's big red neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped around it and with perfect precision rounded the second and thundered on to the third. We tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. With the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy horse! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.

【答案】
I locked the front door and invited them to the changing room. I spent the next three hours taking photos of this kid in every princess costume I have in my closet. She was the sweetest, most well-behaved kid I had ever worked with. Once we were done, she lay on the couch in my office and fell asleep while I loaded up the photos for her mum to see and choose the ones she liked best.
The other thanked me over and over and came up front, holding out her credit card. I refused to accept it, say: “I feel very honored to take a photo of such a lovely angel. I’m not taking money for this, but I hope you can allow me to put one of her photos in our showcase, because she has the most beautiful and warmest smile. Many years later that photo of a sick little girl on a giant pink unicorn is still in a frame in my shop, always reminding me to show kindness to those who really need it.

My aunt Tina cooked us a delicious dinner. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast.
“Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

【答案】
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. The horse reared up in surprise, nearly throwing me off. I clung tightly to the reins, my heart pounding with fear. My father quickly came to my side, calming the horse with gentle words. He guided us back to the trail, assuring me that everything was alright. However, as we continued our ride, I realized we had wandered off the path in the confusion. The landscape around us was unfamiliar, and panic began to creep in as we ventured deeper into the wilderness.
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. The sun dipped below the horizon, and shadows stretched across the ground. I could feel the chill of the evening air and hear the distant howls of coyotes. My father suggested we follow the river back, as it would lead us to familiar territory. We moved cautiously along the riverbank, our eyes straining to spot any landmarks. After what felt like hours, the warm glow of Uncle Paul’s farmhouse lights welcomed us from a distance. Relieved, we guided our horses towards home, grateful for the adventure and the safety of the farm.
