Some time ago, I was chatting with a Chinese friend about the famous places of interest in New York. When he asked me to compare two art museums, I said, “Ah, they’re just like chalk and cheese.” My answer left my friend confused. The expression was clearly over his head. At that moment, I realized it’s easy to puzzle people from non-English-speaking countries with our idioms (习语). But learning idioms can be fun!
Let’s start with “like chalk and cheese”. It means two things are completely different. Just think about it. Cheese is soft and smooth, while chalk is dry, hard and dusty. What a big difference!
Then what does “like a dog with a bone” mean? If you’ve seen a dog protecting its bone, it will be easy to understand. This idiom means someone is stubborn (固执的) and won’t give up a topic or task. Got it?
There’s also another idiom “as the crow flies”. I made a mistake about it in a school exam. It refers to the shortest distance between two points, which is a straight line or the most direct route (路线).
There are many interesting idioms to explore in one short article. If you’re interested, you can look up the meanings of “a dog’s dinner” “the bee’s knees” and “beat about the bush” and learn to use them.
Idioms make language more interesting. Have fun with them!
31. What does the underlined word “confused” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Puzzled. B. Frightened. C. Worried. D. Relaxed.
32. The idiom “like chalk and cheese” means ________ according to the text.
A. two things are very similar B. two things are completely different
C. two things are hard to find D. two things are both food products
33. How did the author feel about learning idioms?
A. Boring. B. Difficult. C. Exciting. D. Enjoyable.
34. According to the passage, what can you do if you want to learn more idioms?
A. Ask your English teacher. B. Watch English movies.
C. Look them up by yourself. D. Travel to English-speaking countries.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. To discuss the history of English idioms. B. To compare English idioms with Chinese idioms.
C. To show how to use idioms correctly. D. To introduce various English idioms.

White Cane Safety Day (白手杖安全日) falls on October 15 every year. The festival was set up for visually impaired people (视障人士). Besides guide dogs, cane dogs also help the visually impaired. In China, there are more than 17 million visually impaired people, but only about 400 guide dogs. Luckily, help will come soon from a robot guide dog. (The robot is named Xiaojiao.)
It was developed by a team at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The robot is about the size of an English bulldog (斗牛犬), but a little wider. It has six legs and walks stably (稳定地). Xiaojiao uses AI to plan routes and recognize (识别) traffic lights, and it can remember routes once it learns them. The robot can walk up to three meters per second. A cane is connected to its body. Its owner can push the cane forward to make the robot go faster. When the owner pulls the cane back, the robot slows down.
Xiaojiao can recognize words, so it can listen and talk to its owner. It can answer in less than one second, and it can give correct answers 90 percent of the time.
Because Xiaojiao is a robot, it may be placed into more places than real dogs. And unlike real dogs, Xiaojiao doesn’t need to be trained or raised. This saves users’ time and money. NOT many years ago, there was a world without smartphones. There was a time with no smartphones. It was a simpler time—a time of face-to-face conversations, physical maps and alarm clocks. Let’s go back to that pre-smartphone age.
The first stop is communication. Communication was more personal. People wrote letters and sent faxes. Making a phone call meant dialing on a keypad and waiting. Words were the only way to express feelings, because there were no emojis (表情符号).
Next, let’s talk about navigation (导航). In the past, people depended on physical maps compasses to find their way. There was a joy in spreading out a large map and using their finger to find their way.
Entertainment was very different as well. People read books, played board games or went outside. There were no online video apps.
In the pre-smartphone age, people also had a different relationship with time. We depended on watches and wall clocks. We had to set our alarm clocks by hand every night before going to bed. And we used calendars to mark important dates and events.
In short, life before smartphones was different but not necessarily worse. It made us more patient, more focused on the present. Maybe in the future, we’ll look back at the pre-AI days like we do now. But for now, we should value the process that has shaped our current lives. It shows us how technology has changed our world, but also makes us remember the simple joys we once had.

C To show how to use idioms correctly. D. To introduce various English idioms.
C
What’s more, the scientists will produce this robot in large numbers, so the price will be lower. They will produce a number of test robot dogs by the end of this year.
36. What is the size of the robot guide dog Xiaojiao?
A. The same size as an English bulldog. B. Smaller than an English bulldog.
C. Twice the size of an English bulldog. D. A little larger than an English bulldog.
37. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Routes. B. Cane dogs. C. Traffic lights. D. Visually impaired people.
38. What can we know about Xiaojiao from the text?
A. It can recognize all traffic lights correctly and walk 5 m/s.
B. 17 million visually impaired people in China use it now.
C. It needs to be trained like a real dog and is very expensive to produce.
D. It can answer any question within one second and get 90% of the answers right.
39. The main purpose of the text is to ________.
A. encourage people to use robot guide dogs
B. introduce a new robot guide dog
C. compare help types for the visually impaired
D. show technology’s role in helping the visually impaired
40. According to the text, we can predict (预测) that in the future Xiaojiao might ________.
