Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn By Li Bai Leaving at dawn the White Emperor crowned with cloud; I’ve sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day. With monkeys’ sad adieux the riverbanks are loud; My skiff has left ten thousand mountains faraway. Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn was a seven-character poem written by Li Bai, a famous poet (诗人) of the Tang Dynasty. In 759 AD, Li Bai got into some trouble in politics (政治), getting banished (放逐) by the Emperor Xuanzong, to Yelang (in today’s western Guizhou Province). When he stopped shortly on his way at Baidicheng, news came that the emperor had freed him. Excited and eager, he felt like he made it back home, to Jiangling, in just one day. In many poems, poets showed their feelings through a special view. Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn was about a journey taken by boat. It didn’t tell joy directly, but readers can feel the poet’s joy through his writing. The second line compared (比较) a short period of time (“a day”) and a long distance (“a thousand miles”), telling us how fast the boat was moving. But the rapid (湍急的) water didn’t make the poet afraid. Instead, he was excited as the water was helping him quickly reach his destination (目的地). The last line was about a journey, by boat, through ten thousand mountains. If you took this journey, you’d be quite bored. But, on the way home, Li Bai felt the journey passed in the blink of an eye. In ancient Chinese poems, the singing of monkeys usually stood for sadness, and mountains represented difficulties. However, the poet was not sad about these things because he was able to quickly leave them behind. His hope for the future keep him happy. 15. Which word rhymes with “loud”in the poem? A. Day. B. Cloud. C. Faraway. D. Dawn. 16. According to the poem, how did Li Bai feel? A. Afraid. B. Surprised. C. Happy. D. Sad. 17. What can we know from the underlined sentence “Li Bai felt the journey passed in the blink of an eye”? A. Li Bai felt the journey was very slow. B. Li Bai felt the journey was very boring. C. Li Bai felt the journey was very fast. D. Li Bai felt the journey was very exciting. 18. According to the passage which of the following is true? A. The poem was a five-character poem by Li Bai. B. Many poets liked to show their family through special views. C. In many Chinese poems, mountains stood for sadness. D. Li Bai looked forward to getting home as soon as possible. Many people dream of going on a great travel. Most of us keep dreaming; others make it happen. Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel America from top to bottom (底部). He got the idea after he finished a 1, 600-kilometer bike ride. Gregg’s friend Brooks Allen was also a cyclist. The two friends talked and made a plan: They would travel from Alaska to Argentina by bike. To pay for the trip, Gregg and Brooks worked and saved money for years. After four years of planning, they set off. Once they were on the road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in hotels. In many places, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food. Two years, 12 countries, and over 30, Gregg finally reached Argentina, at the southern tip of South America. Halfway through the trip (继续) without him. Gregg and Brooks kept a record of their travel in an online blog. The trip taught both men a lot about traveling. Here is some of Gregg’s advice. •The fewer bags you have, the less you’ll worry about. •Don’t plan everything. You’ll be more relaxed and happy. •Be polite. Nobody wants to fight with a nice guy. 19. Bring many things on your trip so you don’t need to buy anything. D. When you travel in different countries, learn to say “thank you”. What do you want to be when you grow up? Would you like to be a scientist or an artist? If you have brothers or sisters, the order in which you were born may affect (影响) your choice of jobs. The birth order can affect people and their personalities. A group of British scientists studied 500 people from 11 different job groups. They found that older children are more likely to become astronauts (宇航员) and scientists. NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong and British scientist Stephen Hawking are both the oldest children in their families. That’s probably because parents usually treat older children more strictly (严格) than younger children. This gives them a more disciplined (遵守纪律的) personality. The scientists also found that middle children are 30 percent more likely to become CEOs than their brothers and sisters. The scientists said that this could be because middle children need to do more to get attention from their parents. This makes them more competitive (有竞争力的), flexible (灵活变通的) and good at talking. Mark Zuckerberg, former CEO of Microsoft, are both middle children. Younger children, on the other hand, are more likely to be the “softest”. They get attention by learning to pay attention to other people’s thoughts. This makes them sensitive (敏感的). Therefore, younger children are more likely to become musicians. German musician Johann Sebastian Bach and Austrian composer (作曲家) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were both the youngest children in their families. The study results also showed that the only child is more likely to become an artist. They get full attention from their parents and are freer to develop themselves. This makes them more creative and confident. 23. According to the passage, who is more likely to become a scientist? A. The youngest child. B. The oldest child. C. The middle child. D. The only child. 24. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 5? A. Middle children work harder to get their parents’ attention. B. Parents treat older children more strictly than others. C. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are middle children. D. The only child gets full attention from their parents. 25. What may a musician be like according to the passage? A. Strict with themselves. B. Competitive and flexible. C. Sensitive to others’ feelings. D. Clever and confident. 26. What does the writer use most in this passage? A. Numbers. B. Famous people’s words. C. Questions. D. Examples. 27. What can we know from the passage? A. Parents give each of their children full attention in their family. B. Children can be what they want to be when they grow up in their family. C. Parents treat their children in different ways in their family. D. Children can develop themselves on their own in their family. The chrysanthemum (菊花) is a very popular flower in China The beautiful flower has many meanings in Chinese culture. With monkeys’ sad adieux the riverbanks are loud; My skiff has left ten thousand mountains faraway. 23. B 24. A 25. C 26. D 27. This makes them sensitive (敏感的).”及第七段句子“Therefore, younger children are more likely to become musicians.” 根据第三段句子“That’s probably because parents usually treat older children more strictly (严格) than younger children.”、第五段句子“The scientists said that this could be because middle children need to do more to get attention from their parents.”和第六段句子“They get attention by learning to pay attention to other people’s thoughts.”以及第八段句子“They get full attention from their parents and are freer to develop themselves.” The chrysanthemum (菊花) is a very popular flower in China. He kept putting cotton into Martha’s sack (麻袋),” Sambo told Legree that night. “Then we’ll have to give him a lesson.” said Legree. Slowly the tired slaves (奴隶) came into the room for the weighing of the sacks. First Legree weighed Tom’s sack, and it was enough. Martha’s sack was next. The weight was enough, but Legree shouted at her. “You lazy animal! This is not enough! Stay here and wait.” He finished weighing all the other sacks, and then turned to Tom. “Come here,” said Legree, “I want to give you a better job than picking cotton, and you can start tonight: take this woman and whip (鞭打) her—you know how.” “I’m sorry, Master,” said Tom. “I can’t do it.” Legree whipped Tom across his face and then hit him with his fists many times. “There!” he said. “Now will you tell me you can’t do it ?” “Yes, Master,” said Tom, with blood running down his face. “I will work night and day, but I will never whip another person”. “I bought you, and you’re mine, body and soul (灵魂).” he said, kicking Tom. “My soul isn’t yours! _____________ ” “We’ll see,” said Legree, “Sambo, Quimbo, give this dog, a lesson.” It was late at night, and Tom lay bleeding alone, among pieces of broken machinery. He heard a noise. “Who’s there? Please, give me some water!” It was Cassy. She helped him drink and then she cleaned his wounds and put something soft under his head. Tom felt better. —Adapted from Uncle Tom’s Cabin 63. What is Tom? ____________________ 64. What will Tom say in Paragraph 11? We can learn to be kind and not to hurt others. 【63题详解】 根据文中“Slowly the tired slaves came into the room for the weighing of the sacks. 故填He is a slave. I belong to God, not Legree. We can learn to be kind and not to hurt others. I want to be a _______ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文: I want to be an English teacher Have you ever thought about your future job?
