My grandfather often said “I won’t” to show his dislike of dishonesty (不诚实).
When he was young, he worked as a furniture maker. One day, a neighbour invited him to make some furniture. When arriving, he noticed the wood provided was a little wet, so he said, “I won’t start right away.” He chose to let the wood dry for a month. He knew working with wet wood could cause problems later on.
Around the same time, another furniture maker was also asked for a similar (类似的) job by a different family. Unlike my grandfather, he began working right away. As a result, the neighbour started doubting (怀疑) my grandfather, thinking he was trying to make more money by putting off the work. However, my grandfather waited patiently. He wanted the best quality (质量) for the furniture he was making.
A month later, the other furniture maker received his money and went back home. My grandfather began to make strong and beautiful furniture when the wood was completely dry. A few months passed and the furniture made by that maker began to break. The neighbour then regretted doubting my grandfather and said sorry to him. People came to understand his honesty and skill, spreading his fame (名望) far and wide.
Influenced by my grandfather, my father also follows the value of “I won’t”. He always provides the freshest food, which makes his restaurant very popular in town. Once a trader wanted to sell some cheap but smelly seafood to my father, he said “No!” and stopped the business.
Now, my brother and I keep in mind what our grandfather and father taught us. Through ups and downs in life, we’ve come to deeply understand our family value behind this saying—to be truthful and honest.

headphones
Headphones are helpful. We use them to listen to music without disturbing (打扰) others. Many kids use them in school. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise.
microscope
How hearing works
There are cells (细胞) inside the ear that help you hear. They can only be seen with a microscope. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark said. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. She studies how loud noise affects our ears.
Sound is invisible (看不见的). But it moves in waves. It makes the hair cells move back and forth. Think of the wind in the leaves.
Loud noises can damage (损害,伤害) these cells. The cells scrape (刮擦,擦碰) against the ear. This makes them twist (弯曲,变形). And once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back.
Protect your ears
One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus (耳鸣). It’s a ringing in the ears. “It’s like someone is playing a note on the flute for a long time,” Clark says. “There’s no getting rid of it.” And the damage affects more than your ears. It can cause anxiety and stress.
How can you protect your ears? Keep the volume on your headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds around you. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from your headphones. “If I can hear what you’ re listening to when you’re wearing your headphones,” Clark says, “it’s too loud.”
Sounds are measured in units called decibels (分贝). Raindrops are 30 decibels. Fireworks are 140 decibels. What about your headphones? Listening devices can go higher than 100 decibels. That’s too loud. To protect your ears, keep your device at about half volume. And don’t listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.
27. Loud noises can make the hair cells inside the ear ______.
A. get twisted B. grow longer C. increase in number D. become stronger

Learn to love who you are
Expect to be treated with kindness, respect and love from a good friend? You shouldn’t have to go far to find them. Start by being you own friend.
Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Imagine your best friend is worried or upset, then think about how you’d support him or her and try to make him or her better. Self-love means giving yourself the love, care and respect you might give your friends and family. Becky Goddard-Hill is the author of Create Your Own Confidence. He says self-love means valuing yourself at all times. “It’s speaking to yourself with kindness and encouragement, and it means taking really good care of your body and mind.”
Learning to love who you are strengthens (增强) your self-esteem (自尊). This makes you believe in yourself and feel that you deserve (值得) good things—such as kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you do face challenges, they’ll be easier to overcome. Studies show that self-love can help friendships, schoolwork and health. “There is always someone looking out for you,” says Goddard-Hill, “because that person is you.”
Love yourself better. Start by being kind, especially if you make a mistake. Instead of being angry, tell yourself that everyone gets things wrong sometimes. Then work out what you could do differently next time. Try not to compare yourself to others and remember that no one is perfect. Focus on (专注于) yourself instead. Goddard-Hill suggests writing down your advantages and asking your family and friends for their thoughts. “Keep the list somewhere safe and look at it often to remind yourself you are amazing,” she says. Before you go to bed, think about three things that went well for you that day. “This will help you see the positives (积极的方面) in your life, ” says Goddard-Hill.
Give affirmations to yourself. Goddard-Hill suggests doing this three times every morning to give yourself a boost (激励) . Here are some ideas. Can you think of any more?
●I like who I am.
●I can do this.
●I am a good friend.
Take time out for you. You can spend 15 minutes a day giving yourself the attention you deserve, starting with:
●Listening to your favourite music.
●Going for a walk or bike ride.
●Cuddling (搂抱) your pet.
●Reading a book in bed.

A. What self-love means. B. To be kind to yourself.

26. What has the writer learned from his grandfather and his father?

28. According to the passage, which of the following is the right way to protect our ears when using headphones?

C. We can listen to music at 100 decibels for 50 minutes a day.
D. We can listen to music at about 50 decibels for no more than an hour a day.
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

Learn to love who you are
Expect to be treated with kindness respect and love from a good friend?
30. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. What self-love means. B. To be kind to yourself.
C. Why self-love matters. D. To give yourself love, care and respect.
31. What does the word “affirmations” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Strange ideas. B. Encouraging words.

A. Watching TV all day. B. Helping others with their problems.
