Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Recently, China has made a big stop toward self—driving technology. Since August, 2024, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
Why do we develop self-driving cars?
Self-driving cars bring us many benefits. They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams and better parking of cars. For blind or disabled people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily. According to official statistics, each year, more than 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world, and more are injured. It’s reported that self-driving cars could reduce (减少) road accidents by 90% and save governments a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is the human mistakes. By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose focus like humans do.
But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens self-driving cars can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver could. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars wouldn’t see the lines on the road easily. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system would be broken by someone, causing it to crash or change its direction.
It’s clear that there is still a long way to go to make self-driving cars a common and sate sight on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen, said China Daily.

Plants Crying in Pain
Try to think about this: you sit down and begin to eat a tomato. Suddenly, the tomato starts to scream (尖叫)! This would never really happen. But a new study shows that plants make sounds when they are cut off their stems.
Scientists in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声传声器) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. They listened to three groups of plants.
The first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only made the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the study team told CNN.
Scientists believed that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is stressed and not good for laying eggs on. When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound to choose which one to eat.
The scientists also listened to other crops such as wheat (小麦) and corn. They also made more sounds when stressed. Scientists said the study can help farmers in the future. They can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.
根据短文内容,判断正 (T)、误 (F)。

“The 2026 Winter Olympics might be my last Olympics. Whatever the result will be, I have only one goal to be better than my earlier results, ” 34-year-old Olympic champion Xu Mengtao once said.
Xu was born in Liaoning Province in 1990. Her parents sold mutton skewers (羊肉串) and Xu often helped out during holidays. Xu learned gymnastics (体操) at the age of 4. Xu finally realized her dream at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, by completing triple flips (三周空翻) on her final jump.
In her book, Xu writes down her true feelings about her life over the past years, her memories of heart—stopping international competitions, the number of medals she won, the low points she managed to overcome and her full preparations for each competition. “Plan each jump, review each problem and look for every possibility. The real situation is unpredictable, so I have to be fully prepared, ” Xu wrote in her book.
“I hope my personal experiences can encourage more people to go after their dreams,” Xu added. “Don’t stop trying. It’s hard to say when all your hard work will pay off, but it will when it matters most. ”

If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver could.

The real situation is unpredictable, so I have to be fully prepared, ” Xu wrote in her book.

【答案】例文
Dear Jason,
Welcome to Changchun! I’m glad to introduce some Chinese table manners to you. Firstly, we usually wait for all the guests to arrive before starting to eat. Secondly, it’s impolite to point at others with chopsticks. I hope you will have a good time in Changchun and enjoy Chinese food and culture.

【答案】例文:
Doing Small Things Is Important
I believe doing small things is very important for achieving success.
I have always been weak in math. So, I decided to do a small thing—to solve one math problem every day. At first, it was difficult, but I persisted. Day after day, I found that my math skills were improving. Eventually, I did well in the math exam.
From this experience, I learned that every small step counts. Success comes from continuous efforts and the accumulation of small achievements. As long as we keep doing small things consistently, we can reach our goals.
