When at college, Andrew Westbrook found that he could focus (集中注意力) well when he put his heart into an interesting book, but he could not focus in class. This troubled him a lot. After he graduated, he became a neurologist (神经学家). His research helps us understand why we have difficulty doing certain tasks.
Scientists used to think that mentally (精神上) tiring tasks required more energy than easier ones. For example, solving math problems needs more energy than looking around a room. As a result, these harder tasks would make us lose focus more quickly. However, even when you’re just looking around a room, your brain is handling lots of information and using a lot of energy. But we never think such tasks difficult.
According to Westbrook’s studies, we often think certain tasks are harder than they really are. When we are thinking about doing a difficult task, it often feels much worse than really doing it. And this early “mentally difficulty” can make us unwilling to do it. But if we can get over this difficulty, it will become easier.
Westbrook’s team has found ways to help us. One is to focus on the advantages of finishing the task instead of the effort it takes. Another is to get into a mental state (状态) called “flow”, where we don’t care how hard the task is. One key to entering “flow” is to reduce uncertainty. For example, before you write a report, ask yourself “How much can I finish in 15 minutes?”
Making these mentally tiring tasks a habit can also help. Try doing them at a fixed time and place. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won’t just feel easier — it will be easier.
29. What does the underlined word “handling” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Dealing with. B. Worrying about. C. Giving up. D. Taking away.
30. What can we know from the passage?
A. When you look around a room, your brain needs little energy.
B. When you set a time limit, it becomes harder to finish the task.
C. Westbrook has the ability to focus on the things he’s interested in.
D. Westbrook’s research has nothing to do with his own experiences.

“Never mind!” replied Rat kindly. “I’m always in and out of the water myself, so don’t worry about it. I’ll teach you to row and to swim.”
Mole found no words to say at that moment.
When they got home, they had a good hot dinner in front of a bright fire while Rat told exciting stories of life on the river. We often hear a parent shout, “Tidy your room!”. It’s thought that an unmade bed and messy (杂乱的) floor can make other family members stressed.
A study found that mess and managing it are “central and important to happiness” while a messy living space make people more stressed, especially in women. On the other hand, some untidiness may be the sign of creativity. So what do you think, is it OK to have a messy bedroom? Recently, this topic has caused hot discussion online.
Yes — it’s not a big deal
It is important for children to have their own space where they can be themselves. By allowing children to keep their room as they want, parents are helping children prepare for later life. Also, clearing up your room is a waste of time and there are more important things to focus on, like work and hobbies. Anyway, there is a great chance of getting the room messy again.
No — messiness leads to bad feelings
Research shows that in a messy room, you may feel worried and can’t focus on tasks like homework. A tidy room can improve clear thinking and calmness. It also means you have more space for activities and won’t lose things. What’s more, mess might be dangerous — you can fall down or knock something onto the floor and break it.
In my opinion, we can live according to our own willingness if we live alone. However, keeping our space clean and tidy is an important life skill. It is unfair (不公正的) to other family members if our room is messy as it is part of their home too, and we should respect that.

Soon Rat began to row gently towards home while the sun went down behind the trees. Mole was very excited about the day. He began to think that he knew everything about boats now. So he said, “Rat! Please, I want to row!”
Rat shook his head with a smile. “Not yet. It’s not as easy as it looks.”
Mole was quiet, but he wanted to row indeed. He was sure he could row as well as Rat. Then, before Rat could stop him, he jumped up, and pulled the oars (桨) out of the surprised Rat’s hands. Rat fell off his seat, calling out, “Stop! You’ll have us in the river!”
Mole made a great dig, but the oars never touched the water at all. Mole fell over. Frightened, he tried to hold the side of the boat, and the next moment — splash (落水声)!
Mole and Rat and the lunch basket were all in the water.
Of course, it was Rat who pulled Mole out of the water. Rat turned the boat right way up and got the lunch basket from the bottom of the river. And he laughed and laughed.
When all was ready again the poor Mole sat in the boat very wet. As they left, he said in a low voice, “Ratty, I have been so silly. I am really sorry indeed.”
Then he took Mole upstairs to the best bedroom, and soon Mole was lying warm and comfortable, listening to the sound of his new friend the River running past his bedroom window.
