B Like almost every set of new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started snapping pictures of their son, Noah, practically from the moment he was born. When he was about three months old, Elizabeth noticed something odd. The flash on their digital camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash was being reflected back at the camera by something. When Elizabeth took Noah to an eye doctor, Noah was diagnosed with retinal (视网膜) cancer with the white reflection as a sign. He endured months of treatment, but it was too late. Noah’s cancer is treatable if caught early. Bryan Shaw wondered whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every baby picture of Noah he could find and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently. “By the time he was four months old, it was showing up in 25percent of the pictures taken of him per month,” Bryan recalled. Later, Bryan was determined to put his hard-won insights to good use. He created a database that recorded the cancer’s appearance in every photo of Noah. He also collected photos and compiled the data from eight other children with the same cancer. Armed with that data, he began to work with colleagues to develop a smartphone app that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for white eye and can be used as a kind of ophthalmoscope (眼底镜). Called White Eye Detector, it is now available for free on Google Play and in Apple’s Apple Store. “I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this,” Bryan said. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only could this software save vision, but it can save lives.” 4. Why did Bryan and Elizabeth take pictures of Noah? A. To record his growth. B. To celebrate his birth. C. To test their digital camera. D. To collect evidence of eye diseases. 5. Which word can best describe Bryan’s feelings in paragraph 3? A. Terrified. B. Regretful. C. Lonely. D. Exhausted. 6. What can the app do to help? A. It serves as a detector. B. It presents expert advice. C. It saves photos on users’ phones. D. It provides a worldwide database. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. How a boy lost his eye. B. How a new app works. C How a father saved his son. D. How an app came into being. C According to new research, babies are not only capable of creative thinking well before starting to speak, but this sort of thinking may be important for language learning. In the study, the researchers set out to explore the origins of human creativity and productive thinking to try to find out how people arrive at completely new thoughts and ideas. They found that babies were able to very quickly learn new words that describe small quantities and combine these with familiar words to fully understand a phrase. Lead researcher, Dr. Barbara Pomiechowska, said: “Human creativity is limitless: it has taken us to the moon and allowed us to cure deadly diseases— but despite its importance, we don’t yet know when and how this impressive ability to combine ideas and invent new things appears. This research shows that we must go right back to the beginning of language learning to solve this puzzle.” In the study, the researchers worked with 60 babies, all around the age of 12 months. They started by teaching the babies two novel words describing quantity: “mize”, to mean “one”, and “padu”, to mean “two”. Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object names, for example to identify “padu ducks” from some pictures. By teaching novel words to represent quantities, the researchers were able to test the babies’ ability to combine concepts in real time, rather than simply recall combinations of words that they already knew from previous experience. By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about. According to Dr. Barbara, this ability to combine different concepts is likely to help babies not only to understand the language input, but also to learn about different aspects of the physical and social world. 8. What puzzle did the researchers want to solve? A. The origin of creative thinking. B. The ways to cure deadly diseases. C. The limitations of creative thinking. D. The importance of language acquisition. 9. What were the babies asked to do in the study? A. Create novel words. B. Count numbers in order. C. Point out the number they knew. D. Match objects with what they heard. 10. What did the researchers use in the study? A. Previous data. B. Advanced technology. C. Professional concepts. D. Regular examinations. 11. For Dr. Barbara what is the effect of babies’ ability to combine different concepts? A. Very bad. B. Quite impractical. C. Greatly beneficial. D. Pretty impressive. D Before becoming a therapist (治疗师), I had no idea what it meant to “hold space” for somebody. Now, the term is widespread on social media and serves as the foundation of my work. Holding space is the backbone of supportive relationships and bridges the gap between two people when one person is in hardship. The term “holding space” was first popularized by Heather Plett, a writer in Canada. In a 2015 blog post, Plett described holding space as “the act of being fully present with someone else, without judgment or distraction, so that the person can share their experiences and perspectives. This looks like creating a safe, accepting environment, engaging in attentive listening and offering non-judgmental support.” Research shows that holding space can reduce stress and anxiety, enhance relationships, and improve mental health and well-being. Holding space is no easy task. It requires the patience to be calm, to delay a response even when someone has upset or frustrated you. It also requires radical acceptance, a release of your ideas about who the other person should or can be, and openness and honesty about who they actually are. These skills require us to know ourselves as well. “Holding space is a form of attunement(调和)or the ability to be aware of our own state of mind and body while also tuning in and connecting to another person,” the University of Pennsylvania professor Edward Brodkin said. But “holding space” doesn’t ask us to honor others’ feelings without comment or response. Instead it is a baseline of love and acceptance from which a deeper, more genuine connection can grow. As Brodkin puts it, “It’s a way of investing in your relationship, developing it and enabling it to grow. In order for the relationship to grow, you need to be able to see them for who they really are. If you can’t, then how can you know them with any depth?” 12. Why is Heather Plett’s description mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To explain the definition of “holding space”. B. To indicate the challenges of “holding space”. C. To reveal historical facts about “holding space”. D. To present the skills required for “holding space”. 13. What does “radical acceptance” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. A skill to keep distance with others. B. An emotional reaction to the cruel reality. C. An ability to find opportunity in adversity. D. An effective way to process your emotions. 14. What does Brodkin advise us to do? A. Pick an investment account. B. Show the greatest tolerance to others. C. Build a healthy relationship with others. D. Stop being affected by others’ comments. 15. According to Brodkin, what will happen if we don’t see others truly? A. We can deeply understand them. B. We might worsen the relationship. C. We won’t be able to know them better. D. We may have wrong ideas about them. While a hobby is anything you do in your leisure time that brings you joy or pleasure, not all hobbies are good for you when it comes to health and happiness. He kicked chunks of snow with his new Nike shoes. He only pretended to listen to the chat of his friends, Norm and Ed, as they all got on the number 10 bus after school. Frank and his friends sat down at the back of the bus along with several other high school boys, some from other schools. The bus headed west on Blue Mound Road. He still remembered another cold, gray day just a month ago in November when his world crashed down around him, as he read the team list, searching desperately for his name. It wasn’t there. The bus braked suddenly and Frank naturally pressed his Nikes against the floor. “It must have been my size,” he thought, “Five-feet-four. Since I’m new at Marquette High, the coach must have taken one look at me and my shoes and decided I was too small to join the basketball team.” He had been a star athlete in all the sports in primary school. Now, it seemed he was a nothing. The bus stopped at the County Institutions grounds. Frank glanced up at the driver, who had a nickname “Kojak” because of his bald head. An elderly woman hung onto the handrail and slowly pulled herself onto the bus. As she sank into the seat behind the bus driver, her feet kicked up, and Frank saw that she was barefoot. As Kojak got the bus back into traffic, he yelled over his shoulder, “Where are your shoes, lady? It was below 10 degrees out there.” “I can’t afford shoes,” the woman answered. She pulled her worn-out coat collar around her neck. Some of the boys at the back exchanged glances and laughed. “I got on the bus just to get my feet warm,” the woman continued. “If you don’t mind, I’ll just ride around with you for a bit.” Kojak scratched his bald head and shouted “Now just tell me how come you can’t afford shoes?” “My husband is badly ill in the hospital, so we only have money for food and necessities,” the woman said in a low voice. Frank looked down at his new Nike basketball shoes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then Frank hurried to the door and was about to step down. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年度第一学期期终高中二年级教学质量测试 英语科试题 本试题共8页,满分130分,考试时间120分钟 说明:1. A If you are planning to start a career in the field of education, science, or culture, then an internship (实习) at UNESCO will be ideal for you. This research shows that we must go right back to the beginning of language learning to solve this puzzle.”(该研究的首席研究员Barbara Pomiechowska博士表示:“人类的创造力是无穷无尽的:它让我们登上月球,还使我们能够治愈致命疾病。 故选A。 根据文章第五段“Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object names, for example to identify “padu ducks” from some pictures.(随后,研究人员要求婴儿将这些新的数字单词与不同的物体名称相结合,例如从一些图片中识别出“padu 鸭子”。)” 根据文章第六段“By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about.(研究人员利用眼动追踪技术来监测婴儿的视线方向,结果表明婴儿能够成功地将这两个概念结合起来,理解他们所被询问的内容。)” 根据文章最后一段“According to Dr. Barbara, this ability to combine different concepts is likely to help babies not only to understand the language input, but also to learn about different aspects of the physical and social world.(据Barbara博士称,这种组合不同概念的能力不仅可能帮助婴儿理解输入的语言信息,还有助于他们了解物质世界和社会世界的不同方面。)” C。 D Before becoming a therapist (治疗师), I had no idea what it meant to “hold space” for somebody. “Holding space is a form of attunement(调和)or the ability to be aware of our own state of mind and body while also tuning in and connecting to another person” the University of Pennsylvania professor Edward Brodkin said. A 13. D 14. C 15. 根据文章第二段“The term “holding space” was first popularized by Heather Plett, a writer in Canada. In a 2015 blog post, Plett described holding space as “the act of being fully present with someone else, without judgment or distraction, so that the person can share their experiences and perspectives. This looks like creating a safe, accepting environment, engaging in attentive listening and offering non-judgmental support.”(“留出空间”这一说法最初由加拿大作家Heather Plett推广开来。 故选A。 根据第三段中“It also requires radical acceptance, a release of your ideas about who the other person should or can be, and openness and honesty about who they actually are.(它还需要radical acceptance,即释放你对另一个人应该或可以成为谁的想法,以及对他们实际上是谁的开放和坦诚)”可推知,radical acceptance指的是一种对他人真实身份的接纳,不带有预设或偏见,接受他人的真实状态,这更像是一种处理我们对他人的情绪和反应的有效方式,以便我们能更好地为他们留出空间。与D项“An effective way to process your emotions.(处理情绪的有效方法)”含义一致。 根据文章倒数第二段““Holding space is a form of attunement(调和)or the ability to be aware of our own state of mind and body while also tuning in and connecting to another person,” the University of Pennsylvania professor Edward Brodkin said. But “holding space” doesn’t ask us to honor others’ feelings without comment or response. Instead it is a baseline of love and acceptance from which a deeper, more genuine connection can grow.(宾夕法尼亚大学教授Edward Brodkin说:“留出空间是一种协调能力,即在关注自身身心状态的同时,感知并与他人建立联系。” 根据文章最后一段“As Brodkin puts it, “It’s a way of investing in your relationship, developing it and enabling it to grow. In order for the relationship to grow, you need to be able to see them for who they really are. If you can’t, then how can you know them with any depth?”(正如Brodkin所说:“这是一种对人际关系的投入方式,促进关系发展并使其能够成长。 While a hobby is anything you do in your leisure time that brings you joy or pleasure, not all hobbies are good for you when it comes to health and happiness. To choose how you spend your time, ask yourself how you feel when you finish doing a particular activity. Many hobbies enhance your sense of satisfaction. ___16___ I know many people’s hobby is just scrolling through social media, but the reality is that they feel lost or even worse afterward. ___17___ When you play video and mobile games, you just sit still or lie down without any movement, which increases your risk of many health issues. You need to be aware of that and strive for balance. So how do you choose a hobby? Just look at it through the lens of the seven pillars of health: sleep, nutrition, movement, emotional mastery, thoughts, relationships and purpose. We need them all for an ideal lifestyle. ___18___ What hobbies are right for you will vary greatly based on your personality, interests, abilities and resources, but most people have a gut instinct of likes and dislikes. ___19___ For instance, if you’d like to add more movement to your life, improve your memory and build friendships, you might enjoy a group exercise hobby like Zumba, paddleboard, yoga or “star tour” night hikes. Your options are limited only by your imagination. ___20___ The answer is individual. Some people focus all their energies on the one thing they are super passionate about, while others enjoy a variety of activities. Regardless, it’s good to try something new every once in a while, as the novelty is good for refreshing boring life. A. Is there a right number of hobbies to have? B. How do hobbies benefit our body, brain and spirit? C. However, some only add to your emptiness and tiredness. D. The other downside of electronic hobbies is little or no exercising. E. A good way to pick a hobby is by considering what you want to improve. F. Luckily, nearly all hobbies can provide measurable positive health benefits. G. Doing a hobby that engages you in these aspects will make you happy and healthy. C 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 根据前文提到的“Many hobbies enhance your sense of satisfaction(许多爱好能提高你的满足感)”以及后文提到的“I know many people’s hobby is just scrolling through social media, but the reality is that they feel lost or even worse afterward. 【17题详解】 根据后文提到“When you play video and mobile games, you just sit still or lie down without any movement, which increases your risk of many health issues.(当你玩视频和手机游戏时,你只是坐着或躺着不动,这增加了你患许多健康问题的风险。)” 【18题详解】 根据前文提到的“Just look at it through the lens of the seven pillars of health: sleep, nutrition, movement, emotional mastery, thoughts, relationships and purpose. We need them all for an ideal lifestyle.(只是从健康的七大支柱来看它:睡眠、营养、运动、情绪控制、思想、人际关系和目标。 【19题详解】 根据前文提到的“What hobbies are right for you will vary greatly based on your personality, interests, abilities and resources, but most people have a gut instinct of likes and dislikes.(什么样的爱好适合你,取决于你的个性、兴趣、能力和资源,但大多数人都有一种本能的好恶。)” 【20题详解】 根据后文提到的“The answer is individual. Some people focus all their energies on the one thing they are super passionate about, while others enjoy a variety of activities. 故选A。 I play tennis a lot. The bus braked suddenly, and Frank naturally pressed his Nikes against the floor. “If you don’t mind, I’ll just ride around with you for a bit.” Kojak scratched his bald head and shouted, “Now just tell me how come you can’t afford shoes?” “My husband is badly ill in the hospital, so we only have money for food and necessities,” the woman said in a low voice. Frank looked down at his new Nike basketball shoes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then Frank hurried to the door and was about to step down. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Frank looked down at his new Nike basketball shoes. His feet were warm and cosy. When he glanced at the woman who was dressed in rags, a sense of sorrow swept over him. With a complicated mood, he slipped the shoes off under his seat. When the bus stopped, Frank waited until everyone else had got off. Then he reached under his seat and picked up his basketball shoes. He walked quickly up to the woman and handed them to her, looking down and saying, “Here, lady, you need these more than I do.” Then Frank hurried to the door and was about to step down. He heard the woman exclaim, “Look, they fit me just perfectly!” Then he heard Kojak said, “I’ve never seen anything like that in the 20 years I’ve been driving this bus.” The woman was crying. “Thank you, young man,” she said. He smiled at the woman. “It’s no big deal.” He hurried off after Norm and Ed. It seemed to him that the grayness had lifted. On the way home, hardly could he feel the cold beneath his feet at all. 词汇激活 行为类 ①看了一眼:glance at/peek at ②脱下鞋子:slip the shoes off/take the shoes off ③对……微笑:smile at/beam at 情绪类 ①一种悲伤的感觉:a sense of sorrow/a feeling of sadness ②复杂的心情:a complicated mood/a mixed emotion 【点睛】【高分句型1】When he glanced at the woman who was dressed in rags, a sense of sorrow swept over him.
