B A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds (葵花子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds” he said. I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so hard just to get one small seed. When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door to door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making. I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. In the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with a fancy table cloth, ready — made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then. I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no. matter how strange they may seem. It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins their breath. They think it’s a delicacy, and it’s connected with their culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition. 4. What lesson can we learn from the passage? A. Eating habits come from a certain culture. B. One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone. C. It is good to form healthy eating habits. D. Changing your eating habits will change your life. 5. What did the writer become aware of? A. What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year? A. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it. B. Children can eat delicious food on that day. C. The families would get together for it. D. The traditions of celebrating it disappear. C New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations. The restoration measures include bringing indigenous plants back to areas where they disappeared, as well as building modern water collection systems.  Local organizations believe the projects will help lessen the effects of land mismanagement and climate change. The efforts seek to slow expanding desertification, which happens when land turns into desert. A United Nations report states that 40 percent of land worldwide is currently degraded. It also predicts that by 2030, 700 million people could be displaced by drought. It blames the problems on land and water mismanagement, poor agricultural methods, mining and city development. Jordan is one of several countries already struggling with the effects of degradation, the report said. But environmentalists in Jordan are already taking steps to prevent further land damage. “We’re working on the water, we’re working on the green cover and we’re working also with the habitats of the creatures, from insects to animals,” said Deyala Tarawneh, who helped create WADI, an organization seeking to repair forests and grasslands and find ways to improve water security in Jordan. “The success rate of these plants is 85 percent, which is considered a very high percentage,” Tarawneh said. “And they only need to be watered once, which is also reducing the amount of water needed for the irrigation of the green areas.” But as WADI’s efforts continue, environmentalists say land restoration in Jordan still faces major difficulties. One of them is a lack of land areas available for restoration. In addition, many people in local communities are not willing to leave the land alone for at least one or two rainy seasons to let it recover. The UN report calls for financial support to strengthen restoration efforts in developing countries. Among other things, it urges the expansion of protected and conservation areas, better water management and improved agricultural methods. But the report also notes that a lack of action could result in up to 16 million square kilometers of land degradation by 2050.That is an area about the size of South America. 7. What does the underlined word “indigenous” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Commercial. B. Native. C. Delicate. D. Large. 8. What are the plants introduced to the land like? A. They are salt-tolerant. B. They are heat-resistant. C. They are drought-tolerant. D. They are disease-resistant. 9. Which measure is good for land but unfriendly to people? A. Building water collection systems. B. Adjusting land management systems. C. Leaving the land alone for recovery. D. Turning to traditional agricultural methods. 10. What can be the best title for the text? A. Food crops help improve soil health B. Jordan is facing severe desertification C. Jordan is at higher climate risk with land loss D. Restoration projects offer hope for saving damaged land Shyness is a sense of uneasiness and discomfort that some people feel in the presence of others. 根据划线词上文“New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations.(中东国家约旦的新项目旨在修复世界上最缺水国家之一的受损土地)”以及后文“back to areas where they disappeared(回到它们消失的地方)”可知,约旦的新项目旨在修复世界上最缺水国家之一的受损土地,说明措施是要把本地的植物带回它们消失的地方,故划线词意思是“本地的”。 根据倒数第三段“And they only need to be watered once, which is also reducing the amount of water needed for the irrigation of the green areas.(而且它们只需要浇一次水,这也减少了灌溉绿地所需的水量)”可知,引进到这片土地上的植物耐旱。 根据倒数第二段“But as WADI’s efforts continue, environmentalists say land restoration in Jordan still faces major difficulties. (但是,环保人士说,随着WADI的努力继续进行,约旦的土地恢复仍然面临重大困难。其中之一是缺乏可用于恢复的土地面积。此外,当地社区的许多人不愿意在至少一两个雨季让土地恢复原状)”可知,让土地自行恢复对土地有利,对人不利。故选C。 【10题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“New projects in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan aim to repair damaged land in one of the world’s most water-starved nations.(中东国家约旦的新项目旨在修复世界上最缺水国家之一的受损土地)”以及第二段“Local organizations believe the projects will help lessen the effects of land mismanagement and climate change. (当地组织认为,这些项目将有助于减轻土地管理不善和气候变化的影响)”结合文章主要说明了约旦的新项目开始致力于拯救受损的土地,列举了一些恢复土地的措施。可知,D选项“修复项目为拯救被破坏的土地提供了希望”最符合文章标题。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Shyness is a sense of uneasiness and discomfort that some people feel in the presence of others. It comes from self-consciousness, low self-respect and fear of judgment. Shy people seem to make bad decisions. They often make unrealistic social comparisons, comparing themselves against the most energetic or outgoing individuals. They believe that others are always thinking of them poorly. They abandon new social opportunities. ____11____. However, shy people can successfully deal with social challenges without changing themselves. ____12____ They are the last one to announce their achievements or let the world know what is amazing about them. When shyness is not extreme, it can make them appear more approachable to others. Shyness, and the modesty nature that go with it, are rarely threatening to others and may allow people to feel more comfortable around them. ____13____ This calmness may have a positive effect on those around them. Shyness is common and is easy to overcome with practice. You can handle shyness with the right tools. Instead of avoiding social events, you can schedule them in advance and practice your social skills ahead of time. Preparing questions and amusing stories for others also helps. This way, you shift your focus from yourself to people around you. ____14____ You might just get a surprise and find out that one of the people you admire for their social abilities is actually just as shy as you. ____15____ When you recognize and understand your shyness, and then act based on that self-awareness, it can also lead you everywhere to success. A. Many shy people are modest. B. Shyness doesn’t disappear on its own. C. Being shy has some unexpected advantages. D. You can even ask socially outward people for advice. E. Feeling sad, I spent the rest of the day thinking about how frightened, helpless and hopeless Eric must feel, facing such a big challenge. How sad Eric’s parents would be! Right then, I decided to make Eric a toy panda for luck and hope. I also made a card for Eric. I told him that he always had a place in my heart and that I hoped that he would recover quickly. The next day after school, I gave the toy panda and the card to my teacher, for she was going to visit Eric at the hospital. She was surprised and thanked me on behalf of Eric’s family. One day, as I passed our meeting room, I saw many people sitting inside. I took a closer look and was amazed. There were almost all of my teachers, and a woman I had never seen before. Then one of the teachers came out and invited me to go in. He told me that the woman was Eric’s mom and that she was asking about me. Paragraph 1: Feeling excited and curious, I walked into the meeting room, following the teacher. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: One morning about twenty days later, entering the classroom, I found Eric looking at me with a big smile on his seat. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Feeling excited and curious, I walked into the meeting room, following the teacher. Eric’s mom stood up and greeted me with a warm hug. Her eyes were red from crying, but she managed a small smile as she thanked me for the thoughtful gifts I had sent to Eric. She told me how much the toy panda and the card had lifted his spirits during his hospital stay. I felt a surge of emotion, knowing that my small gestures had made a difference to him. One morning about twenty days later, entering the classroom, I found Eric looking at me with a big smile on his seat. My heart skipped a beat with joy and relief. Eric was back, and it seemed that a part of our class was finally complete. He was thinner, but his smile was as bright as ever. We exchanged a long, tight hug, and he showed me the well-loved toy panda he had brought back with him. The class gathered around, and there was a palpable sense of happiness and unity. It was a moment none of us would forget. ②交换:exchange/swap ③聚集:gather around/assemble/come together 情绪类 ①情绪涌动:feel a surge of emotion/experience a wave of emotion ②快乐:a sense of happiness/a feeling of joy 【点睛】【高分句型1】I felt a surge of emotion, knowing that my small gestures had made a difference to him.(运用了现在分词knowing 作状语以及that引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】We exchanged a long, tight hug, and he showed me the well-loved toy panda he had brought back with him.(运用了省略关系代词that或which的限定性定语从句修饰先行词toy panda) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
