阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
In today’s digital environment, it’s refreshing to shop at an authentic street market. Here we’ve dug deep to uncover some of the best ones.
Chatuchak Weekend Market — Bangkok Thailand
The Chatuchak Weekend Market is claimed to be the world’s largest weekend market, which makes it hard to navigate for newcomers. As such, grab one of the free market maps from the information booth. It will help you from getting lost! You’ll hear loud music from eclectic fashion stalls, smell the scent of Thai street food cooking, and see groups of people moving about. Everything is pretty cheap here, so don’t feel that you need to get down on price too much.
Souks of Marrakech — Marrakesh, Morocco
As the most famous group of street markets in the world, souks of Marrakech have over 3, 000 stalls and food vendors (摊贩) selling everything from multi-colored Moroccan carpets to spices, antiques and tagines. Valuable goods such as gold and delicate handicrafts are located in the center of the market, and the items become less expensive as you work your way out. It can be hot here, so the best time to visit is in the morning or for a pleasant evening walk.
La Boqueria — Barcelona, Spain
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the typical Spanish city of Barcelona, the local market of La Boqueria is a must. The grand iron entrance welcomes you to a foodie’s paradise of displays that are impressive just to look at, let alone taste. Besides the fantastic local Spanish cuisine, you will find a variety of foods from all around the world.
Las Bóvedas — Cartagena, Colombia
Las Bóvedas is a great place to pick up souvenirs, including hand-woven bags, artwork and hand-made Colombian hammocks. During operations, the area is buzzing (人声鼎沸) , and vendors can be slightly pushy to get your attention and a sale. However, if you are after some traditional and authentic Colombian merchandise, Las Bóvedas is the place to shop.
21. What makes Chatuchak Weekend Market special?
A. Its fame. B. Its location. C. Its size. D. Its service.
22. What should you do when visiting souks of Marrakech?
A. Employ a local as your guide. B. Learn to bargain with vendors.
C. Avoid buying gold handicrafts. D. Choose a proper time of the day.
23. What do La Boqueria and Las Bóvedas have in common?

B
One of my earliest memories is of my father sitting me down at our kitchen table with canvases, paints, and brushes. He taught me how to blend colors and use various materials such as acrylic (丙烯酸的) paints and watercolors. Whenever we felt inspired, we would set out all our materials and paint whatever our hearts desired.
My father grew up in a small village in the Dominican Republic. Despite the scarcity of materials, he created art with whatever was at hand. He saved his money to purchase paints and colored pencils to sketch on the walls around his home. When he was 15, he arrived in America alone and stayed with his aunt in Florida for a while before completing high school in New York with another aunt. He studied extremely hard and eventually obtained his citizenship.
As I grew older, I developed a fondness for drawing people, as I could emphasize the unique physical features that make each person special and beautiful. However, as time went on, I began to be overly critical of my own work. I worried that I could never match my father’s talent. My simple, two-dimensional drawings seemed lackluster compared to his realistic landscapes. I found faults in all my creations, so I became increasingly insecure. Art, which was once my favorite thing, made me feel I wasn’t good at it. Instead of striving to improve, I gave up and stopped drawing.
He noticed it and told me, “Mia, you should audition for the school. I wish I’d had an opportunity to study art like this when I was a child”. Moved by his story and determination, I worked on my portfolio and was fortunate to get in.
Attending the art college was an eye-opening experience. I expanded my artistic range beyond painting. I learned to embrace my individuality and talent, and became more open to sharing my artworks and accepting constructive criticism, thereby boosting my self-esteem regarding my art.
24. What’s the purpose of the author’s introducing her father’s experience in Paragraph 2?
A. To prove that art is the only way to combat poverty.
B. To illustrate the roots of her father’s influence on her.
C. To criticize the lack of educational chances in rural areas.
D. To contrast her life with the difficulties her father endured.
25. Why did the author stop drawing for a while?
A Because the author thought she couldn’t be as good as her father.
B. Because the author didn’t like art anymore.
C. Because the author didn’t have enough art supplies.
D. Because the author was too busy with schoolwork.
26. What kind of person is the author’s father?
A. Brave and carefree. B. Persistent and supportive.
C. Ambitious but dependent. D. Creative but stubborn.
27. What’s the author’s opinion expressed in the passage?
A. Art is about following established rules. B. Talent guarantees admission to art programs.
C. Confidence comes from accepting imperfection. D. Progress can be achieved through trial and error.

Tardigrades, with nicknames like “water bear”, may be the toughest animals on Earth. They have been around for at least 500 million years or so, possibly sharing a common ancestor with arthropods (节肢动物). Over 1,000 species are known today, including marine, freshwater, and terrestrial tardigrades. Tardigrades are near the edge of visibility for most human eyes. A typical tardigrade is about 0.5 mm long, and even the largest ones are less than 2 mm in length.
Perhaps the most famous thing about tardigrades is their strange and mysterious durability. Tardigrades are not immortal, but they have a powerful adaptation that allows them to survive for decades in extreme conditions. To endure environmental stress, tardigrades suspend their metabolism (新陈代谢) through a process called cryptobiosis.
Some tardigrades in a turn can handle pressure as high as 600 megapascals (MPa) . That’s nearly 6, 000 atmospheres, or 6, 000 times the pressure of Earth’s atmosphere at sea level, and it’s about six times higher than the pressure found in the planet’s deepest ocean trenches. Even half as much pressure, 300 MPa, would kill most multicellular life and bacteria.
Two tardigrade species flew into low-Earth orbit on the FOTON-M3 mission in 2007, becoming the first animals known to survive direct exposure to space. The 12-day mission proved that exposure to the vacuum was no problem for them, and the lack of gravity had little effect, either. Some tardigrades even laid eggs during the mission. Research has shown tardigrades can survive roughly 1,000 times more radiation than a human.
Chinese scientists have decoded the key mechanisms that make tardigrades radiation-resistant, which could shed light on how to make human beings stronger against radiation and how to increase the stress tolerance of human cells in the future, according to a study published in the journal Science in October 2024.
28. How does the author introduce the features of tardigrades in Paragraph 1?
A. By making comparisons. B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C. By showing examples. D. By listing figures.
29. Why can tardigrades possibly survive in extreme conditions according to this passage?
A. Because they are immortal.
B. Because they can change extreme conditions.
C. Because they can regain life from death for many times.
D. Because they slow down their metabolism.
30. When tardigrades face pressure or space, what is a possible condition?
A. They can’t handle pressure more than 500 Mpa.
B. They can only survive indirect exposure to space.
C. They are almost not affected by the lack of gravity.
D. They will be killed by the pressure about 300 Mpa.
31. What is the importance of the study of Chinese scientists?
A. Their findings can be applied to help human beings.
B. They focus on the reproduction of tardigrades.
C. They study the dietary habits of tardigrades.
D. They proved tardigrades radiant-resistant.
D
Regardless of what language we speak or whether we are blind or sighted, new research suggests a shared, universal non-verbal communication system comes to life when we gesture without talking.
The study of children aged 3 to 12 years old was led by Șeyda Özçalışkan, a psychological scientist at Georgia State University in Atlanta and a native Turkish speaker who studies language development in different types of learners and different language speakers.
One hundred children were asked first to describe an action with words and hand movements and then to describe the same action without speaking using only their hands (what’s known as silent gesture). Half the children were native English speakers, and the other 50 kids spoke Turkish as their first language. English and Turkish make for a good comparison because they differ in terms of how speakers of each language describe events.
“If you’re speaking Turkish, if you want to describe someone running into a house, you have to break it down into smaller parts. You say, “he’s running and then he enters the house,” explains Özçalışkan. “But if it’s in English, they’ll just say ‘he ran into the house,’ all in one compact sentence.” When children spoke and gestured at the same time, their gestures followed the conventions of their native language: Turkish-speaking children ordered their gestures the same as they structured a sentence, and English-speaking children integrated theirs into one movement.
However, when describing the same scenes without speaking, the sequences of the children’s hand gestures were remarkably similar. Language-specific differences in gestures had seemingly evaporated. Özçalışkan and colleagues also found similar descriptions in earlier work with adults: blind English and Turkish speakers organized their gestures the same as sighted speakers did when they refrained (克制) from speaking.
Past studies in German and English-speaking children have also found silent gestures don’t necessarily follow the structure of a person’s native language. However, those studies didn’t directly compare different language speakers as this new one did. Of course, this research involved researchers interpreting abstract gestures from a few hundred — hardly enough data to support such a big claim, but certainly an interesting idea to explore.
32. Why did the researchers choose Turkish to make a comparison?
A. Due to its similar sentence patterns. B. Due to its distinct description habits.
C. Due to its impact on other languages. D. Due to its different cultural backgrounds.
33. What is the meaning of the underlined word “evaporated”?
A. Disappeared. B. Expanded. C. Remained. D. Multiplied.
34. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Non-verbal communication is structured differently in different languages.
B. Visual ability influences the structure of non-verbal communication.
C. Non-verbal communication has universal similarities when silent.
D. The study’s findings are definitive due to the large sample size.
35. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To summarize the research methods adopted. B. To question the reliability of the study’s findings.
C. To emphasize the significance of the research. D. To suggest potential areas for future research.
第二节 (共5小题;每题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
The comparison thief loves to sneak into our minds without warning and steal our joy or peace. And with social media flooding our lives, it’s easier than ever to find someone “better” to compare ourselves to. Constantly measuring ourselves against others can be an exhausting mind game. ___36___ . We either walk away feeling inadequate (不足的) or get a false sense of fulfillment, believing we are better than others. I constantly struggled with this battle. So, what did I do?
___37___ . I learned the art of seeking inward. At the start of each day, I told myself to love and appreciate myself and give myself confidence instead of looking to others to do that. Getting your mindset right at the beginning of the day sets you up for a successful day of less comparison.
Accept the real self. One of the biggest things that helped me stop comparing myself was finding out who I was and accepting her. When witnessing my friend’s gorgeous and well-organized house, I naturally tended to compare mine with hers. ___38___ , but I’ve accepted my humanity. We are all imperfect beings deserving of love, respect, and appreciation. Celebrating the other person and accepting myself was the opportunity to start again with the truth.
Restrict social media time. I stopped following social media accounts that made me feel inadequate or insecure and set a boundary about my time on those apps. They can become a wormhole and suck up the precious time we have. ___39___ . Better yet, put your phone down and engage with the people whose opinion truly matters.
Be present. I began to train my mind to trust that I did not need to plan, control, and schedule everything. ___40___ . I wouldn’t worry about recording a moment for others to see. Instead, I would choose to focus on seeing and appreciating it for myself.
A. Reset my mind
B. Seek for confidence
C. In it we always lose
D. Set a timer if you must
E. Feelings of failure instantly arose
F. What I needed to prepare was a gift for her
G. All I needed to do was living in the moment

Flora liked nothing better than to spend time with her grandfather. You see, he was always making something and she enjoyed watching, learning, and sometimes even helping him finish whatever he was doing. Now, the two decided to go on a hike in the woods tomorrow.
The next morning, Flora did not need an alarm to wake her. She was up, dressed, and ready to go as the sun rose and the day began. After a great breakfast and a long drive, Flora and her grandfather arrived at the base of a mountain and the beginning of the trail. “This is beautiful, ” Flora said. “Just where are we hiking? ” “To the very top of the mountain where we will have lunch, rest, maybe take a swim, and then hike back down, ” he replied. “Swim! ” Flora said excitedly. “Is there a lake on the top of the mountain? ” “Yes, ” her grandfather replied. “There is a lake surrounded by big flat rocks and it is filled with clear, cold water. ” “Wow! ” was all Flora could say.
As they hiked up the mountain, Flora asked many, many questions. “What kind of tree is that? ” “How high are we? ” “Are there bears around here? ” “Are there any other people up here? ” “What do we do if we get lost? ” And of course: “Are we there yet? ” Her grandfather answered all her questions the best he could and explained that they were in a very natural area. Not many people, all sorts of wildlife, even bears. He helped her understand and respect the natural beauty around them, particularly the animals. He taught her how to use a compass, and things to help them be safer while they hiked. Like whistle a song or make some noise to let the bigger animals know you are in their area. In a soft voice, her grandfather said, “The Earth is our mother. All life is sacred; treat all life with respect. Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more. M: I’d like to learn an instrument, but I quite like the idea of an experience too, You know, like a day racing fast cars or an air balloon ride. But to be honest, those sorts of things rely on the weather a lot, unless it is nice like the day. I’ve heard about lots of air balloon rides being postponed due to rainy conditions.
W: Didn’t your friend do something like that? And it went horribly wrong.
M: It was an exciting speedboat ride but as it was windy. He was throwing overboard. They fished him straight out, but he caught a cold from the experience
W: Em, well. Maybe, we won’t get you that then. How about my idea about learning a musical instrument?
M: Actually, that would be good. As I’d love to play in an orchestra, but not the two instruments you suggested.
W: Okay, leave it with me and it will be a surprise.

【原文】I know you are all wondering why we have gathered here together. Well, I have announcements to make. You are perhaps wondering if we are finishing the term early or maybe you are hoping that I have called you all here to cancel your exams. No such luck, I am afraid. I wanted us to come together and thank our wonderful professor Tony Hopkins, before he leaves Sarah university for bigger and better things after forty years’ service. We are all going to miss him dearly. I asked professor Hopkins what he plans to do with all the extra time on his hands. Most people do something like learn a new musical instrument or take up gardening. Mr. Hopkins is going to follow a new passion. He will be swapping his suit for a full set of protective clothing and producing honey. If you are currently enrolled in one of Mr. Hopkin’s classes for next term. Don’t worry. You won’t need to study alone. I said Mr. Hopkins was almost irreplaceable but not quite. We will be introducing you to Miss Jones early next term. Now as you know, professor Hopkins loves playing the guitar. Let’s watch the step bent perform for one last time as we see farewell.

A. Because the author thought she couldn’t be as good as her father.

【答案】28. D 29. D 30. C 31. A

B. Expanded. C. Remained. D. Multiplied.
34 What can be inferred from the passage?
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。本文主要讲述了新的研究表明,当人们不说话只用手势交流时,会出现一种共享的、普遍的非语言交流系统。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“English and Turkish make for a good comparison because they differ in terms of how speakers of each language describe events.(英语和土耳其语是一个很好的比较对象,因为这两种语言的使用者在描述事件的方式上存在差异)”可知,研究人员选择土耳其语进行对比是因为它在描述习惯上与英语有明显的不同,这种不同使得比较更加有意义。故选B。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第五段中的“However, when describing the same scenes without speaking, the sequences of the children’s hand gestures were remarkably similar. Language-specific differences in gestures had seemingly evaporated.(然而,当孩子们在不说话的情况下描述相同的场景时,他们的手势顺序却非常相似。特定语言间的手势差异似乎evaporated。)”可知,孩子们在不说话的情况下描述场景时,他们的手势顺序非常相似,以至于特定语言间的手势差异似乎不再存在,即“消失了”。因此,“evaporated”在此处的意思是“消失了”,与A选项“Disappeared.(消失了)”相符。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段中的“However, when describing the same scenes without speaking, the sequences of the children’s hand gestures were remarkably similar.(然而,当描述相同的场景而不说话时,孩子们手势的顺序却非常相似)”以及最后一段中的“Past studies in German and English-speaking children have also found silent gestures don’t necessarily follow the structure of a person’s native language.(过去对德语和英语国家的儿童的研究也发现,无声的手势并不一定遵循一个人的母语结构)”可以推断出,不说话时非言语交流具有普遍的相似性。故选C。
35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“Of course, this research involved researchers interpreting abstract gestures from a few hundred — hardly enough data to support such a big claim, but certainly an interesting idea to explore.(当然,这项研究涉及研究人员从几百个抽象手势中进行解读——这些数据几乎不足以支持如此大的说法,但无疑是一个值得探索的有趣想法。)”

C. In it, we always lose
D. Set a timer if you must
E. Feelings of failure instantly arose
F. What I needed to prepare was a gift for her
G. All I needed to do was living in the moment
【答案】36. C 37. A 38. E 39. D 40. G

Enjoy your journey but leave no tracks.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As they hiked a little farther, Flora saw the lake surrounded by rocks. Marveling at the surroundings, she sped to the lakeside, where her grandfather and she enjoyed their sandwiches. The sunshine, filtering through the branches, danced on the water and warmed Flora’s heart. This natural leisure doubled her childlike delight. “I must be dreaming! ” Flora exclaimed. The brisk breeze patted their cheeks and immersed them in the sounds of nature. Flora was so enchanted that she forgot the time.
Flora was sad when she heard her grandfather say, “It’s time to leave. ” A wave of loss swept over Flora. She walked slowly, with her lip dropping. Her grandfather tenderly stroked her hair, “Dear, we can visit this beautiful place next time! ” A question suddenly emerged in Flora’s mind. “Why is the most beautiful scenery always so far away? ” Grandfather’s response resonated with Flora, “in remote areas, beauty often appears more enchanting; because it’s untouched by human presence. That’s why we ought to live in harmony with nature. ” As the twilight approached, they descended the hill with joyful strides, carrying a bag of rubbish to keep the mountain clean.
