The Internet is the biggest source1 of information in the world, and it’s accessible2 through a computer. It consists of3 millions of pages of data4. In 1969, DARPA, a US defence5 organisation, developed a way for all their computers to “talk” to each other through the telephone. They created6 a network of computers called DARPANET. For fifteen years, only the US army could use this system of communication. Then in 1984, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) started the NSFNET network. It then became possible for universities to use the system as well. NSFNET became known as the Inter-Network, or “Internet”. The World Wide Web (the web) is a computer network that allows computer users to access information from millions of websites via the Internet. At the moment, about 80 percent of web traffic is in English, but this percentage is going down. By 2020, much web traffic could be in Chinese. The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist, Tim Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television! He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland. Berners-Lee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet, not just universities and the army. He designed the first “web browser”, which allowed computer users to access documents from other computers. From that moment on, the web and the Internet grew. Within five years, the number of Internet users rose from 600, 000 to 40 million. The Internet has created thousands of millionaires, but Berners-Lee is not one of them. Everyone in the world can access the Internet using his World Wide Web system. He now works as a lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. 1.We can achieve almost anything online—with access to the Internet come some truly life-changing advantages. [句式分析] with access to the Internet...advantages是完全倒装结构,介词短语提前,起强调作用,正常语序是some truly life-changing advantages come with access to the Internet。 2.No wonder the Internet has now become the first place that the majority of people turn to for information. No wonder(that)... that the majority of people turn to for information是定语从句,当先行词被序数词或形容词最高级修饰时,只能用that而不能用which来引导定语从句。 3.Gone are the days of searching shop after shop for the perfect pair of boots... [自主翻译] 为了买一双理想的靴子,一家店接一家店去寻找的日子一去不复返了…… 4.However,while the Internet brings many valuable advantages, being connected has its problems. 5.Only in this way can the Internet be a place of discovery, wonder and inspiration for everyone. A Sometimes the stress of work can get to be so high,so it’s nice to get away for a while. However, even on vacation,it can be hard to leave all your worries at the office—especially when you think about the mountain of emails. Iceland now offers a solution with a service called OutHorse Your Email. The service encourages visitors to disconnect and enjoy the country’s beauty while one of several highly trained Icelandic horses replies to any email.“When visitors travel to Iceland we want them to fully experience everything our nation has to offer,” one official said.“Our OutHorse Your Email service lets them do just that.” To use the service, you should fill in a form on its website and your personalized out-of-office email will be written by one horse and sent automatically(自动地).The email explains the sender is away on vacation and that they’ve given their email jobs to one of Iceland’s four-legged animals. It then includes the message created by the animal. But how do horses type an email? They’ve got their own specially designed horse-sized keyboards in the fields and are able to walk across the keys. However, that still doesn’t mean coherency. They’re horses, after all.The result is just meaningless collections of letters. This might seem like a joke, but is actually meant seriously.Nowadays the line between private life and work has become unclear. The service draws attention to the fact that people have the right to be away from work during their holiday. It also sends a message that Iceland is a unique destination by helping tourists go on a real holiday. It’ll surely put a smile on their face and make them want to vacation in Iceland. 1.What is a problem that people face when they are on vacation according to the text? The project, known as Loon, started in 2011.It was managed by Alphabet Inc.It aimed to bring connectivity to areas of the world where ground-based cell towers(手机信号塔) were too expensive or too difficult to set up. “But Loon was unable to reduce costs enough to make its business model run,” the project’s leader,Alastair Westgarth, said in a blog post.“While we’ve found a number of willing partners along the way,we haven’t found a way to get the costs low enough to build a long-term,competitive business,” Westgarh said. “Loon’s shutdown isn’t surprising,” economists said. Loon’s technology sent gas-filled balloons, the size of tennis courts into the air. They usually stay at heights of around 60,000 to 75,000 feet. There, onboard communications equipment sent Internet signals back down to earth. The system was able to offer mobile coverage to an area 200 times larger than a traditional ground-based cell tower. However,a carrier would need several balloons at once, each would cost tens of thousands of dollars and last only about five months. Alphabet wasn’t alone in running projects aimed at offering Internet connection to hard-to-reach areas.Companies such as Amazon.com Inc.and Elon Musk’s SpaceX have been making efforts to provide Internet connection in such places, using satellites in near Earth orbit. Over the last few years,Loon’s technology has proved successful in some suffering communities. In 2017,the project sent balloons into the skies above Puerto Rico after a terrible hurricane damaged the island’s communications facilities. Two years later, soon after a 7.8 earthquake struck parts of Peru,Loon’s balloons began to provide the locals with mobile connectivity. Rich Devaul,a founder of the project, said the need for mobile connectivity was rapidly rising recently. This made cell towers more cost-effective than he had expected ten years ago, reducing the need for Loon,“The problem got solved faster than we thought,” he said in an interview. 5.Why is Alphabet shutting down Loon? A.It was too difficult to set up the systems. B.It was too costly to continue the project. C.The technology was no longer advanced. D.Many local communities disliked the project. B。 6.How does the author introduce Loon’s technology in paragraph 5? A.By describing difficulties in using it. B.By providing research results about it. C.By explaining its advantages and disadvantages. D.By showing its differences from traditional ones. C。 7.What can we learn about the technology of Loon? A.It helped areas hit by natural disasters. B.It suited the need of developed countries. C.It was unable to work in terrible weather. D.It was less elective than traditional system. A。 8.What was unexpected for Rich Devaul? A.Communications problems became worse. B.The Internet connections were getting faster. C.Other companies would run similar projects. D.Cell towers became more economical in a short time. 根据最后一段中的“This made cell towers more cost-effective than he had expected ten years ago, reducing the need for Loon,‘The problem got solved faster than we thought,’ he said in an interview.” C (2023·安徽高一联考) A growing number of people are using ChatGPT,an artificial intelligence(AI) program,to create books for sale.Although sales have so far been slow, human writers are worried that ChatGPT-created books might hurt the writing and publishing industry. Until recently,Brett Schickler never imagined he could be a published author. But after learning about the ChatGPT AI program,Schickler decided that he had a good chance. “The idea of writing a book finally seemed possible,” said Schickler,a salesman in Rochester,New York.“I thought ‘I can do this.’” Using the AI software,Schickler created a 30-page illustrated children’s e-book in a few hours. He offered it for sale in January through Amazon’s self-publishing department. The e-book,which is named The Wise Little Squirrel:A Tale of Saving and Investing, has made Schickler less than $100. While that may not sound like much,it is enough to make him want to create other books using the software.“I could see people making a whole career out of this,” said Schickler. There were over 200 e-books in Amazon’s Kindle store as of mid-February that say ChatGPT is a writer or co-writer.And the number is rising daily. But because of the nature of ChatGPT and the fact that many writers didn’t concede that they had used it,it is nearly impossible to get a full count of how many e-books may have been written by AI. Some professional writers are becoming worried about the effects that ChatGPT could have on the book publishing industry.Mary Rasenberger is the executive director of the Authors Guild,a writer’s group. She said,“This is something we really need to be worried about—these books will flood the market and a lot of authors are going to be out of work.” 9.What can we learn from Schickler’s story? A.He has always dreamed of becoming a writer. B.ChatGPT is making writing easier than before. C.He plans to make a whole career out of writing. D.ChatGPT has produced more books than humans. 根据第四段中的“Using the AI software,Schickler created a 30-page illustrated children’s e-book in a few hours.” B。 10.What does the underlined word “concede” in paragraph 6 probably mean? A.Promise. B.Remember. C.Admit. D.Appreciate. 根据第六段中的“But because of the nature of ChatGPT and the fact that many writers didn’t concede that they had used it,it is nearly impossible to get a full count of how many e-books may have been written by AI.” C。 11.Why do professional writers get worried? A.They may lose their job. B.ChatGPT will reduce their creativity. C.People will not take writing seriously. D.People will lose interest in reading books. 根据最后一段中的“She said,‘This is something we really need to be worried about—these books will flood the market and a lot of authors are going to be out of work.’” A。 12.What is the best title for the text? A.ChatGPT Has Become Friends of Authors B.More People Have Taken up Writing as a Career C.AI Technology Is Controlling the Publishing Industry D.More People Use ChatGPT to Create and Publish Books 答案 D 解析 标题归纳题。根据第一段中的“A growing number of people are using ChatGPT,an artificial intelligence(AI) program,to create books for sale.” Ⅱ. The Internet has the power to connect people across the world to a single shared community.Billions of people in different parts of the world have joined it already, and obviously many more will follow. 1 One of the greatest advantages of the Internet lies in the quick and easy access to a huge amount of information. 2 With the click of a mouse or the touch of a button,it is possible to find out almost anything we care to know, from food to travel packages, from news to learning resources. No wonder the Internet has now become the first place that most people turn to for information.
