Period 5 Using language(2)—Listening and speaking Unit 4 Amazing art By the end of this period, you will be able to: broaden students’ horizons of different art forms and evaluate them critically; talk about works of art and artists in English and express personal opinions. Did you know? Since it began in the late 20th century, the Contemporary Art Movement has raised questions and doubts, with people asking, “Is it really art?” This was the case in 1999 with British artist Tracey Emin’s work, My bed—which was, quite literally, her unmade bed. Then, in 2015, cleaners in an Italian gallery threw away an art piece after mistaking the pile of empty bottles, cigarette ends and pieces of coloured paper for rubbish! While some say contemporary art lacks skill, meaning and artistic value, others argue that its worth lies in its ability to stimulate new discussions and understanding of everyday objects. How much do you know about it? The Contemporary Art Movement Time Doubts Example 1 Example 2 Views against it Views for it in the late 20th century Is it really art? My Bed—literally her unmade bed a pile of empty bottles, cigarette ends and pieces of coloured paper Contemporary art lacks skills, meaning and artistic value. Its worth lies in its ability to stimulate new discussions and understanding of everyday objects. 1. Everyone can create art, whatever their background. 2. We can use art to learn about the world. 3. Art means different things to different people. 4. Everyone should try to include art in their lives. Now talk about how Jill and Andrew express their opinions towards contemporary artworks. Listen again if necessary. Andrew Jill What did you think of the art exhibition? I thought there were so many interesting ideas. Learning to learn Pauses give the listener extra time to understand what is being said. Pausing also allows the speaker to emphasise certain words within a sentence. Try to be aware of where and when to pause during a conversation. Jill: Hi, Andrew! What did you think of the art exhibition? Andrew: I thought there were so many interesting ideas! I especially liked the piece called Empty. Jill: Really? But that was just a piece of paper painted all white. I thought it was boring. There was nothing to look at! Andrew: But that’s what’s so clever about it! The viewer can decide what it means. It was really fun to look at. Jill: Hmm... I’m afraid I don’t agree. It had no meaning tor me. Andrew: How about Living Room? What did you think of it? Jill: The one copying nothing but the artist’s living room? I thought that was rather lazy! The artist didn’t actually create anything, so that’s not art! Listening material Andrew: I thought it showed us that everyday objects can also be art. When I looked at the details like the coffee cup and the book, I could tell how the artist lives. Jill: Well, I just wanted to take a rest on that sofa! What did you think of those cardboard boxes called Future? Andrew: That was my favourite piece! I think the artist was asking, “In the future, will art be like the boxes? Like something we can easily get and throw away?” It really explored the nature of art. Jill: If you say so... But to me it was just a pile of boxes anyone can make, and I could only think about how my cat would love to play in them! To be honest, I prefer traditional paintings and sculptures. They’re easier to understand. Andrew: I know what you mean, but I still think art should have different meanings for everyone. Work in pairs. Think of the following artwork and act out a similar conversation. Student A You like the painting very much. Student B You think the painting is boring and meaningless. 9 Student A You like the painting very much. 1. It has a wonderful sense of movement and energy. 2. It is vivid and original. 3. It expresses the artist’s emotions and imagination. 4. Some art critics have described the painting as a form of dance or music. Student B You think the painting is boring and meaningless. 1. It’s just paint poured in random lines and shapes. 2. There is no recognizable form within the painting, so it is difficult to understand. 3. It didn’t require much artistic skill to create. 4. It doesn’t hold as much meaning as more traditional paintings of recognizable subjects. Show Time null 114628.68 $$null
