B About 20 years ago while on the way to a student’s house, Zhang Guimei, then a rural teacher in Huaping county, Lijiang, Yunnan province, noticed a girl sitting on the hillside. The girl, 13, told Zhang she was about to get married though she wanted to go to school. It was arranged by her parents. Zhang went to her house and tried to persuade her parents to let the girl return to school and promised to pay for her tuition herself. However, they didn’t agree. Zhang felt sorry for not being able to help. “We always say that each child should stand on the same starting line, but these girls didn’t even have a chance to get on the track,” Zhang said. It persuaded Zhang to build a free high school for girls with the objective of helping break the cycle that saw women drop out of education, marry early and spend their whole life in the remote mountain. Zhang had spent years trying to raise funds, and in 2008, Huaping High School for Girls, a free public high school, was founded, where Zhang is the principal. Over the decades, Zhang has walked thousands of kilometers, visiting students’ families in the deep mountain, talking to villagers, and persuading girls to go back to school. It has been worth it. More than 1,800 graduates have been admitted to college. It is regarded as a “miracle” in the remote area, as most students didn’t perform well in academic study before the school was established. Though lacking full health, Zhang insists on a daily routine—get up around 5 a.m. to call students to get up with a loudspeaker, accompany students to classes and sleep after senior students’ study ends at midnight. Zhang’s husband died in the 1990s. She doesn’t have children or a house, so she lives at the student dormitory. Besides girls in her school, Zhang also donates all her income to help rural education and poor people. In early December, she was given the honor of the country’s “role model for teachers” and “outstanding woman”. Her commitment to her education career inspires thousands of people. 4. Why did Zhang feel sorry when the girl’s parents refused to let the girl return to school? A. The girl’s family was too poor to pay for her tuition fees. B. The girl had to marry a man who was much older than her. C. The girl didn’t even have the chance to complete her education. D. The girl was unable to find a high school nearby to continue her education. 5. What is probably the biggest challenge for Zhang to build the free school for girls? A. Not many girls want to attend this school. B. Few parents support their girls’ going to school. C. The local government didn’t offer the land for the school. D. It was not easy for Zhang to get enough money to build the school. 6. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Most students didn’t study well before Huaping High School for Girls was founded. B. Huaping High School for Girls was founded. C. Many girls can go to Huaping High School for Girls for free. D. Many girls from Huaping High School for Girls have gone to college. 7. What is the main idea of this passage? A. A teacher shows girls how to reach the top. B. Let girls stand on the same starting line. C. Inspiring stories of girls’ education. D. Huaping High School for Girls. C Forgot your password or your ID? Well facial recognition (FR) technology can help. Using just their faces, people can unlock their smartphones, make payments and take the subway. FR technology has also been used to catch criminals. However, as the use of FR applications has become more widespread, the technology has caused controversy over privacy and financial security risks. A survey said that almost 65 percent of surveyed people think that FR technology is being misused. Even worse, more than 30 percent said they actually experienced financial loss as well as privacy violation due to facial information leaks and misuse. According to “Xinhua”, many application do have loopholes (漏洞) that could lead to leaks in personal and facial information data. Loopholes aren’t the only worry, though. On some online trading platforms, only 2 yuan is charged for thousands of photos of people’s face, but such trade is neither authorized nor legal. In August, two suspects were arrested in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, for stealing and reselling personal information. This has raised concerns about the security of personal bio-information. “Physical characteristics, including facial features and fingerprints, are some of the most important identifiers for individuals. Unlike our ID which can be changed, our bio-information stays permanent for life,” Zhang Xin, a professor at the University of international Business and Economics, told CGTN. Therefore, there should be a legal framework that manages the collection, use, storage and transmission of bio-information, according to Zhang. Though China does not have specific rules relating to FR technology, the China Cyber Security Law, which came into effect in 2017, states that personal information can only be collected when individuals are informed and agree to the aims and scope (范围) of the collection. The Civil Code, which was adopted this year, also states that individuals’ permission is required before the collection and processing of personal information. And users have the right to ask to withdraw their personal information, according to Zhu Wei, assistant director of the Communication Law Research Center at the China University of Political Science and Law. Tech companies have been improving their FR algorithm (算法) and the ways in which they collect data. They are now handling security risks with more advanced technology, like federated learning that can train the algorithm without directly accessing the data the company collects. This reduces the possibility of leaks. 8. Why does the author raise a question at the beginning of the passage? A. To state FR technology’s benefits. B. To raise concerns about FR technology. C. To discuss the misuse of FR technology D. To warn people of FR technology’s risk. 9. What is the reason for personal information leaks? A. People’s lack of privacy awareness. B. The misuse of FR technology. C. Imperfection of many apps. D. Illegal offline trading of personal information. 10. What’s the feature of our bio-information? A. Easily available. B. Changeless forever. C. Changing with time. D. Under the protection. 11. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. China has complete laws on FR technology. B. The adoption of laws on FR technology is to protect human rights. C. It’s illegal for users to upload and withdraw their personal information. D. Some people have rights to get personal information without permission. D In Broward County, Florida, the school district’s cellphone ban has caused strong opposition from both students and parents. Since the beginning of the 2024 school year in August, students in Broward County Public Schools have been banned from using cellphones during school hours, including during lunch and breaks, unless given special permission. This policy has caused widespread debate, especially as experts highlight the impact of social media and screen time on young people’s mental health. Studies have shown a link between social media abuse and increased rates of anxiety and depression among youth. However, a recent survey done by the school district, which included over 70,000 parents, showed that nearly one in five parents believe the cellphone ban is negatively affecting their children’s well-being while one seventh of them think there are no bad effects at all. One of the main concerns voiced by parents and students is the inability to communicate with family members, especially during emergencies. This is a significant worry in a district that is home to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of the 2018 mass shooting that claimed 17 lives. School officials have informed parents that students can still use their phones in emergency situations and that teachers have the flexibility to make phone accessible for other reasons as well. Many parents and experts argue that phones are not only essential for staying connected but also serve as valuable tools for accessing online lessons and completing assignments, especially for students who lack school-issued laplops. Broward County’s school officials have acknowledged the challenges of carrying out the policy effectively. Some teachers have found it difficult to monitor students’ phone use, and the policy has raised questions about how to balance the need for phone use with the goal of reducing distractions (分心). Landyn Spellberg, a student advisor to the school board, pointed out that phones can offer significant benefits. He emphasized that the district’s blanket ban is not solving a key issue: teaching students how to use technology in a healthy way. “We need to educate students about the negative effects of technology, not just forbid its use,” he said. 12. What is the policy of cellphone use in Broward County’s schools? A. The students at school can’t use cellphones at will. B. The teachers are responsible for students’ schoolwork. C. The schools ban students from using cellphones at any time. D. The parents are not allowed to buy their children’s cellphones. 13 How many parents think cellphone ban badly influences their kids’ well-being? A. 70,000. B. 50,000. C. 14,000. D. 10,000. 14. What can be concluded from paragraph 3 and paragraph 4? A. Some positive results are spoken highly of by schools. B. Some bad outcomes might happen for cellphone ban. C. Some teachers think it impossible to monitor cellphone use. D. Many parents and experts stress the use of cellphones for contact. 15. What will be probably discussed following the last paragraph? A. The application of cellphone ban to more areas. B. The explanation of negative effects of technology. C. The way to teach students to use cellphones wisely. D. The methods of keeping students away from cellphones. Tricks to Having a Healthy and Balanced Diet Nowadays, many of us spend long hours away from home every day. ____16____ How can we encourage ourselves to eat good brain food? B Let girls stand on the same starting line. C. Inspiring stories of girls’ education. D Huaping High School for Girls. C 5. B 6. D 7. 根据题干可定位到第二段第三、四句“Zhang felt sorry for not being able to help. ‘We always say that each child should stand on the same starting line, but these girls didn’t even have a chance to get on the track,’ Zhang said.(张为没能帮上忙而感到遗憾。张说:“我们总是说每个孩子都应该站在同一条起跑线上,但这些女孩甚至没有机会登上赛道。”)”可知,张桂梅在劝说女孩的父母,让他们的孩子返回学校继续上学,所以get on the track在此处比喻有受教育的机会。因此,张桂梅感到难过的原因是这个女孩甚至没有机会完成她的教育。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。第一、二段中提到了一个女孩辍学,并且其父母反对她继续上学;再根据第三段第三句“Over the decades, Zhang has walked thousands of kilometers, visiting students’ families in the deep mountain, talking to villagers, and persuading girls to go back to school.(在数十年间,张桂梅步行数千公里,走访深山里学生的家庭,与村民交谈,说服女孩儿们回到学校。)” 根据第三段的“More than 1,800 graduates have been admitted to college. It is regarded as a “miracle” in the remote area, as most students didn’t perform well in academic study before the school was established.(1800多名毕业生被大学录取。它被认为是偏远地区的“奇迹”,因为在学校成立之前,大多数学生在学业上都表现不佳。)”可知,It指代上一句“More than 1,800 graduates have been admitted to college.(超过1,800名毕业生被大学录取。)” B。 C Forgot your password or your ID? B 9. C 10. B 11. 由文章第三段中““Physical characteristics, including facial features and fingerprints, are some of the most important identifiers for individuals. Unlike our ID which can be changed, our bio-information stays permanent for life,” Zhang Xin, a professor at the University of international Business and Economics, told CGTN. 由文章第四段第一句“Though China does not have specific rules relating to FR technology, the China Cyber Security Law, which came into effect in 2017, states that personal information can only be collected when individuals are informed and agree to the aims and scope (范围) of the collection. B。 D In Broward County, Florida, the school district’s cellphone ban has caused strong opposition from both students and parents. 13. How many parents think cellphone ban badly influences their kids’ well-being? A. 70,000. B. 50,000. C. 14,000. D. 10,000. 12. A 13. C 14. B 15. It was almost I am. Mrs. Lim was one of my neighbors who lived down the street with her old, sick husband. I immediately thought that Mrs. Lim needed help. “It's my husband. I think he's having a heart attack. Can you help me?” she blurted out(脱口而出). Her eyes filled with tears. With lightning speed I changed my clothes. Then, I followed Mrs. Lim to her house. The whole house was a little musty. As this was my first visit to the Lims' residence, I had a quick glance around the living room. There were wall panels covered with watercolor landscapes, carvings, and cross-stitch(十字绣)pieces. Along the hallway leading to the kitchen was Mr. Lim, sitting in an armchair. He appeared to be out of breath. With Mrs. Lim's help, I managed to carry him to the porch where their car was parked. When we finally managed to get him inside the car, I drove to the hospital. We rushed him to the emergency and casualty ward(临时病室).The doctor on duty informed us that Mr. Lim had suffered a mild stroke. Mr. Lim was admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU). Mrs. Lim and I looked after him all night long. It was then that Mrs. Lim asked me to contact her son and convey the news. I never knew that Mr. and Mrs. Lim had children. I could not recall a time when they ever mentioned a son. I tried to contact the son at the given address, but I was told that he had moved to another town with his wife and children. I could see the pain in Mrs. Lim's face as I told her the news. As I was driving home, I told myself that I would call my own parents ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mr. Lim was discharged(准许离开)from the hospital after ten days ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】As I was driving home, I told myself that I would call my own parents. I had not contacted them for almost a month and my conscience bit me. I had always thought that I had so much work to do and couldn’t spare enough time to visit them. They had devoted most of their time to looking after me for a good part of their lives. I was sobbing terribly all the way home, ashamed of my neglect. Maybe they were suffering from the same scene as my neighbors. Mr. Lim was discharged(准许离开)from the hospital after ten days. He made a speedy recovery. Apart from his unclear speech, he appeared healthy and happy a month after the incident. I didn’t know whether they had contacted with their son, but what I took from the incident helped me a lot. The incident has helped me to know what is important to me. It has also made me realize that when we give a helping hand to those who need our assistance, the world will be a better place to live in. 联系:contact/get in touch with ②.拜访:visit/pay a visit to ③.帮助:give a helping hand/assist sb. 伤心:sob/cry/weep ②.
