Then a man comes out of the forest. He carries some juice from a white fungus. Carefully, he drips the juice into the boy’s ear. They make tea from one type of red vine (藤蔓). It cures stomachaches. Yellow flowers from another plant are used to treat snakebite. Local shamans have used the curing power of plants for thousands of years. _________ Today, scientists from all over the world want to learn what these shamans know about plant medicines. They are racing to find the secrets of the rainforest before the plants disappear for good. And the rainforests are disappearing fast. Every year, people cut down an area of rainforest as large as Florida. Sometimes they want to use the land for farms. Sometimes they cut down the trees and sell the wood. Now the scientists travel by boat, air, and foot to tiny rainforest villages. Then they spend long hours making their way through the hot and humid jungle (丛林) with the local shamans. The shamans show the scientists which plants can be used as cures. Saving the Rainforest One U.S. company has already found an important new medicine. The season brings along with its strong winds and snow — an environment that’s never comfortable to be in. This unpleasant and even frightening part of winter can be often seen in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been driven out by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering (遭受痛苦) things that are usually saved for the poorest and most unlucky human beings. The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being driven out by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It (1599), is fitting for this poor old man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man’s ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (无人性). There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare. Once winter became less of a danger to human beings, it became more positive in literary works. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations. The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast (对比) to the fun going on indoors. Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal: “Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce.” It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it. Although winter still isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have surely “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days. 33.What can we learn from Shakespeare’s works? A.Winter is compared with the ugly side of humanity. B.Shakespeare didn’t like winter for its bad weather. C.It’s in winter when King Lear drove his two daughters off. D.King Lear was forced to give away his kingdom in a cold winter. 34.The author mentions Charles Dickens in the passage because _________. A.a lot of his works are related to winter B.he started a new way of representing winter C.he is the most popular author of winter stories D.his works make people feel cheerful in winter 35.The example of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is used mainly to show _________. A.Christmas is still a symbol of joy in modern stories B.traditional Christmas food makes the winter cheery C.it’s a pleasure to read Christmas-related books in winter D.winter has become the happiest season in literary works 36.The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to _________. A.recommend some winter stories in literature B.explain what winter is like in literary works C.describe certain customs that are related to winter D.tell us why winter is described as unpleasant in literature 【答案】33.A 34.B 35.A 36.B 【导语】本文主要向我们描述了文学作品中的冬天是什么样子的,以及在不同文学作品中冬天的含义。 33.细节理解题。根据“Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity.”可知,在莎士比亚的作品中,冬天被比作人类丑陋的一面。故选A。 34.推理判断题。根据“Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations.”可推断出,文章提到查尔斯·狄更斯,是因为在他之前的作品对冬天的描述都是残忍的不好的,自他以后,对冬天的描述变得不一样了。故选B。 35.细节理解题。根据“but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter...”可知,作者用《哈利波特与魔法石》的例子主要是用来说明,圣诞节仍是现代故事中欢乐的象征。故选A。 36.推理判断题。通读全文可知,本文主要向我们描述了文学作品中的冬天是什么样子的,以及在不同文学作品中冬天的含义。由此推断出作者写这篇文章的目的是:阐述文学作品中的冬天是什么样子。故选B。 D Crying babies, buzzing mosquitoes (蚊子), ringing car alarms ...They’re all bad noises. But what’s the worst? A recent survey (调查) lists the things we hate to hear. The list of horrible noises has over 100 items. Mobile phone ringing appears near the top. Other noises include barking dogs, electric leaf blowers, loud snoring (鼾) and banging noises early on a Sunday morning. However, Top One on the list was the sound of a dentist’s drill (牙医的钻头).” That just sends shivers down my spine,” said one person: “After a visit to the dentist, I sometimes wake up at night with that sound in my head. It’s horrible,” said another. “I’ve seen patients shaking with fear when I bring out the drill,” explained a dentist. Of course, anyone who goes to the dentist and hears the sound will probably agree with that. But there’s some good news. A new device (装置) developed by experts at universities can reduce the sound of the drill. The small device allows patients to listen to music on an MP3 player without the sound of the drill. However, patients are still able to hear the dentist’s voice because not all sounds are filtered out (被过滤). The theory behind it is simple. Microphones are placed close to the dental drill. These pick up any sounds and transform them into digital signals. Then, electronic filters reduce any unwanted sound waves. However, the great thing is that this technology also allows other noises (such as the dentist’s voice) to come through. It’s easy to use, too. Patients simply plug (插) the device into their MP3 players. Then they can listen to music and hear the dentist’s voice without being disturbed by the noise of the drill. Fantastic! So, next time you go to the dentist, remember to bring your MP3 player. 37.According to the survey, ________ is the first of the list of horrible noises. A.barking dogs B.electric leaf blowers C.a dentist’s drill D.a mobile phone ringtone 38.What does the underlined sentence probably mean in Paragraph 3? A.I feel very sad about that. B.It brings me good luck. C.How excited I feel! D.That makes me very afraid. 39.The fifth paragraph mainly talks about ________ . A.where we put the device B.who invented the device C.what the device is made of D.how the device works 40.Which is the best title of the passage? A.A device which reduces noises B.A new kind of drill C.A dentist’s problems D.A Fantastic MP3 player 【答案】37.C 38.D 39.D 40.A 【导语】本文主要介绍了一种减少噪音的装置。 37.细节理解题。根据“However, Top One on the list was the sound of a dentist’s drill (牙医的钻头).”可知,排名第一的是牙医钻牙的声音,故选C。 38.词句猜测题。根据“After a visit to the dentist, I sometimes wake up at night with that sound in my head. It’s horrible”可知,去看牙医后,我有时会在晚上被那种声音吵醒。这太可怕了。说明这句话表示牙医钻牙的声音让人很害怕,故选D。 39.段落大意题。根据“The theory behind it is simple. Microphones are placed close to the dental drill. These pick up any sounds and transform them into digital signals. Then, electronic filters reduce any unwanted sound waves.”可知,第五段讲述的是设备的工作原理。故选D。 40.最佳标题题。根据“But there’s some good news. A new device (装置) developed by experts at universities can reduce the sound of the drill. The small device allows patients to listen to music on an MP3 player without the sound of the drill.”和文章可知,文章主要介绍了一种减少噪音的装置。故选A。 第二节: 阅读下面短文, 从短文后所给的选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项, 使短文通顺连贯, 其中有两项是多余选项。 The personality is something that makes a person different from others. Today we will look at the “Four Traditional Chinese Cuisines”. Sichuan Cuisine Sichuan Cuisine is the most popular of the four. Mapo tofu and gongbao chicken are two of the most famous Sichuan-style dishes. The cooking style has borrowed from other styles to keep up with its popularity. People often say, “The best food in the world is in China and the best food in China is in Sichuan.” Shandong Cuisine Shandong Cuisine, with its long history and many different cooking methods, represents the cuisine of northern China. It has two styles: Jinan and east Shandong. The Jinan style is famous for its soup, while the east Shandong style depends greatly on seafood. Guangdong Cuisine Guangdong Cuisine has developed in an area where the climate is warm, so food can quickly go bad. For this reason, Guangdong Cuisine pays much attention to the freshness of the ingredients (原料). Guangdong Cuisine is also the best-known style of Chinese food abroad. Huaiyang Cuisine Huaiyang Cuisine refers to the style of cooking popular in Jiangsu, where people prefer a light taste. It is special because of the way the ingredients are cut, and it also needs the ingredients in season. 26.How many cuisines are there in China? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. He carries some juice from a white fungus. Carefully, he drips the juice into the boy’s ear. In some rainforest villages of South America, that’s how earaches are cured (治愈)! Rainforest doctors, called shamans, use many kinds of plants as medicine. It comes from a plant found in the rainforests of Ecuador. This medicine may soon be used to cure lung infections in kids. Rainforest plants might cure many bad diseases, such as cancer and AIDS. So medicine companies are working to save the rainforests. When people buy medicines made from the rainforest plants, part of the money will go to help save the rainforests. If the rainforests survive, someday you may find cures in your home that were made from white fungus and red vines. 29.What does the underlined word “He” in Paragraph 1 most probably refer to? A.Rainforest Doctors B.Rainforest Medicines C.The Medicine Companies D.The Surviving Rainforest C The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity. A.recommend some winter stories in literature B.explain what winter is like in literary works C.describe certain customs that are related to winter D.tell us why winter is described as unpleasant in literature D Crying babies, buzzing mosquitoes (蚊子), ringing car alarms ...They’re all bad noises. A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. 27.Which cuisine is the most popular in western countries? A.Sichuan Cuisine. B.Shandong cuisine. C.Guangdong Cuisine. C.Guangdong Cuisine cares about its different types. D.Huaiyang Cuisine is famous for its heavy taste. B A young boy is crying because his ear hurts. Then a man comes out of the forest. He carries some juice from a white fungus. Carefully, he drips the juice into the boy’s ear. In some rainforest villages of South America, that’s how earaches are cured (治愈)! Rainforest doctors, called shamans, use many kinds of plants as medicine. A.The boy’s father. B.The boy’s teacher. C.A rainforest scientist. D.A rainforest doctor. 30.What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about? A.Many rainforest plants are used as medicines. A.Losing the Rainforest B.Looking for the Medicines C.Learning from the Shamans D.Walking through the Rainforest 32.What is the best title for the passage? A.Rainforest Doctors B.Rainforest Medicines C.The Medicine Companies D.The Surviving Rainforest C The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity.
