Confucianism (儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants (五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues (美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors (祖先). While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious (和谐的) society: without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

Have you ever wondered why so many apps are free to use? After all, they cost money to run. Well, instead of paying with money, you’re paying by sharing your personal data (数据). Then businesses buy and use the data so that they can show you target ads.
What happened to personal information online?
Many free apps get paid by businesses who want to know about the users of the apps. What a business wants is the exact information about customers. Data brokers (数据分析员) collect your data—everything from your name, location and education level to the topics you search for, the websites you visit and the people you follow. And then, sell them to businesses.
▲
The data is valuable. Businesses can use the information from data brokers to target their ads. It means they will show their ads to the people who are most likely to be interested in their products or services.
What can we do about it?
Many countries have made laws to protect personal information. For example, a law in the United States says businesses must get parents’ permission (许可) to collect personal data from kids under 13. China’s law on personal information protection came into effect on November 1st, 2021. At the same time, we should try to protect our data. If an app asks for something like your location, consider saying “No”first. In short, information about you is very valuable. Try to protect it.
27. According to the passages, how can people use some apps for free?
A. By sharing their personal data. B. By buying and using the data.
C. By showing the target ads. D. By talking with friends.
28. According to the passage, which picture can describe how businesses show us target ads?
A. B. C. D.

How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight (视力)? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days.
On the first day, I should want to see the people who have made my life worth living and the books which have been read to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods and admire the beauties of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight permanent (永久的) night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again…But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.

A new collection has put the spotlight on qipao. Hu Sheguang, known for his creative designs and amazing shows, presented 100 fancy qipao dresses at the CP Center in Beijing during the 2024 AW Beijing Fashion Week.
There are four different styles: Flowery Woman, French-style Elegance, Rock’n’ Roll, and Neo-Chinese Style. These new designs changed how people viewed the traditional Chinese dress that had been around for a century and gave a new look to the old-fashioned Chinese dress.
Qipao first appeared in the 1920s as a loose dress like the one-piece gowns that men wore and then became popular among young women. About ten years later, the dress was changed to fit women’s bodies better, making it a must-have among fashionable women, especially in Shanghai, which was considered the fashion capital of China. In the 1940s, qipao became more form-fitting (合身的) with a high collar and tight sleeves. By the 1950s, it had become a symbol of elegance. Today, many women in China still wear qipao for formal occasions.
Traditional qipao dresses are usually made of silk, which can be expensive. However, Hu’s designs used different materials, including cotton, linen and leather, to make sure that more women could afford qipao. Hu also made a change to the dress’s buttons (纽扣). Instead of the traditional knot buttons, which can be difficult to tie and untie, he used zippers (拉链) in his designs. “Chinese qipao is usually custom-made to show the wearer’s individuality. Qipao is also so inclusive that it can be worn for different events, allowing every woman to be fashionable,” Hu said.

How time flies and this term is coming to an end. During this term, I have experienced a lot.
I used to be weak in PE and always failed in the running test. My PE teacher Mr Li found I was inactive in PE class. He encouraged me to practise more. Also, he told me to run for 20 minutes in the morning. More importantly, he believed I could make it if I kept practising. Deeply moved by Mr Wu’s encouragement, I decided to change myself. I keep running every day and make progress little by little! Now, I can even get full marks in the 800-metre race!

Recently I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” she replied.
At midnight permanent (永久) night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
