Introductory Chemistry was taught at Duke University for many years by professor Bonk. One year, two guys took the class and did pretty well on all the exams and mid terms. They each had an A. These two friends were so confident in going into the final that the weekend before finals week, despite the Chemistry final being on Monday, they decided to go to the University of Virginia to party with some friends.
They had a great time there. However, with their hangovers (宿醉) and tiredness, they overslept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found professor Bonk after the final and explained to him how they missed the final. They told him they went up to the University of Virginia for the weekend and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire on the way back and didn’t have a spare. So they were late getting back to campus.
Bonk thought this over and agreed that they could take the final the following day. The two guys, happily and relieved (宽慰的), studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Bonk had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet. He told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem which was something simple about solution (溶解). It was worth 5 points. “Cool,” they thought, “this is going to be an easy final.” They then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on it. The question contained only two words: (95 points) Which tire?
4. Why did the two guys decide to go to the University of Virginia?
A. Because there was a chemistry lesson.
B. Because they were sure of themselves.
C. Because the final would be held there.
D. Because they were afraid of the final.
5. When did they take the final at last?
A. On Saturday. B. On Monday. C. On Sunday. D. On Tuesday.
6. What can we know from the passage?
A. The two guys came back to campus late on purpose.
B. Repairing the flat tire took the two guys lots of time.
C. What Bonk taught was not difficult for students.
D. Bonk didn’t believe the two guys’ explanation.

When people think of Beijing, the hutong style always comes to mind. It is no overstatement to say within hutong lives the city’s history.
The word “hutong” was borrowed from the Mongolian word to mean “water well” about 700 years ago. Later it referred to a place where people live. Hutong we see today are made up of small paths formed by walls of siheyuan. They were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, there were more than 3,000 hutong. Most of the city’s population lived in this traditional housing. But with the modernization of the city in the 1980s and early 1990s, many hutong were demolished to build roads, tall buildings and modern houses.
The government has recognized the importance of hulong to Chinese cultural heritage (遗产). In 2002, Beijing listed 40 protected historical areas and increased its efforts to rebuild some key relics and older streets in the city. Nearly 500 hutong have survived.
Hutong that still exist are like oases (绿洲) of calm in the noisy city. Walking through them, it’s common to see groups of elderly people sitting together playing cards, mahjong (麻将) or Chinese chess. In the early mornings and evenings, they gather to practice traditional forms of exercise such as Taijiquan as well as dancing and singing songs or Peking Opera. Hutong have become a museum of Beijing’s customs and history.

B. Most hutong became historical areas.
C. Lots of hutong disappeared.
D. More hutong were built.

Koalas live in the eucalyptus (桉树) forests of southeastern and eastern Australia. They depend on the eucalyptus tree for both habitat and food. In fact, they seldom leave these trees. When not sleeping, they’ re usually eating. They can eat more than a pound of eucalyptus leaves a day. Eucalyptus is poisonous, so the koala’ s digestive (消化的) system has to work hard to digest it, breaking down the poisons and taking in the limited nutrients (营养). That’s why koalas sleep for 18 to 22 hours a day — they get very little energy from their diet.
Koala numbers decreased in the late 19th and early 20th century from hunting for their fur. Now they face serious threats from habitat loss. Land clearing and bush fires — especially the 2019-2020 Australia Bushfire Season — have destroyed much of the forest they live in. Koalas are easy to be affected by climate change. Increasing greenhouse gas in the air is decreasing the nutritional quality of eucalyptus leaves and causing longer, more serious droughts and wildfires. To deal with drought, koalas are forced to stop sleeping and come down from the trees to find water, putting them at a higher risk of being killed.
Koalas have been identified by the Australian government as one of the 113 animals requiring immediate help. Ensuring there’s the right kind of forest for them to return to is extremely important. State governments should create new koala reserves and persuade landowners not to cut down eucalyptus trees. Meanwhile, getting the public to understand koalas’ living habits and their health will throw light on koala biology, which helps to develop plans to better protect the species.
12. What can we learn about koalas?
A. They like moving around very much. B. They often get ill for eucalyptus leaves.
C. They can be seen everywhere in Australia. D. They have developed smart survival skills.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The possible threats to Koalas. B. Koalas’ newly-formed habits.
C. Koalas’ decreasing population. D. The outcomes of greenhouse gas.
14. What is the most important thing to do right now to protect koalas?
A. Conduct the research on their living habits. B. Realize they’re sensitive to climate change.
C. Reserve the proper habitat they are living on. D. Raise the public awareness of protecting them.
15. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A travel brochure. B. A cartoon book.
C. A nature magazine. D. A sports newspaper.
D 13. A 14. C 15. C
根据第一段“When not sleeping, they’ re usually eating. They can eat more than a pound of eucalyptus leaves a day. Eucalyptus is poisonous, so the koala’ s digestive (消化的) system has to work hard to digest it, breaking down the poisons and taking in the limited nutrients (营养). That’s why koalas sleep for 18 to 22 hours a day — they get very little energy from their diet.(当它们不睡觉的时候,它们通常在吃东西。它们一天能吃掉一磅多的桉树叶。桉树是有毒的,所以考拉的消化系统必须努力工作来消化它,分解毒素并吸收有限的营养。这就是为什么考拉每天要睡18到22个小时——它们从饮食中获得的能量很少)”可知,考拉已经发展出了聪明的生存技能来应对消化道和饮食挑战。故选D。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Koala numbers decreased in the late 19th and early 20th century from hunting for their fur. To deal with drought, koalas are forced to stop sleeping and come down from the trees to find water, putting them at a higher risk of being killed.(在19世纪末和20世纪初,由于猎取考拉的皮毛,考拉的数量减少了。 故选A。
根据最后一段“Ensuring there’s the right kind of forest for them to return to is extremely important.(确保有合适的森林供它们返回是非常重要的)”可知,现在保护考拉最重要的事情是保护它们赖以生存的栖息地。
根据第一段“Koalas live in the eucalyptus (桉树) forests of southeastern and eastern Australia. They depend on the eucalyptus tree for both habitat and food.(考拉生活在澳大利亚东南部和东部的桉树林中。它们依靠桉树作为栖息地和食物)”;最后一段“Koalas have been identified by the Australian government as one of the 113 animals requiring immediate help.(考拉已被澳大利亚政府确定为113种需要紧急救助的动物之一)”以及文章介绍了考拉和考拉面对的生存危机,并提出了保护措施,推测文章来自一本自然杂志。故选C。

They were built during the Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties.

A They like moving around very much.
