He was a scientist and an inventor.
How is the article organized?
The first paragraph gives the brief introduction of Benjamin Franklin--a scientist and an inventor.
The next three paragraphs introduce some of his brilliant inventions.

1. Benjamin Franklin didn't discover electricity himself. He experiments led to the discovery of some very important findings of electricity.
2. The invention of lightning rod is important because it protects buildings and ships from damage caused by lightning. 书上有答案a curious person always wants to know how things work and is always searching for ways to make them better.)
3. He was a brave man because he dared to experiment with electricity with simple equipment. That was very dangerous. He was also a man with curiosity because he was interested in new things and carried out experiments.
Why does writer write about lightning rod first?
It is the most well-known invention of his.

What kind of person was Benjamin Franklin? Why do you think so?
I think he was a man with curiosity. He was natually curious about how things worked and was always searching for ways to make them better. For example he did experiments on electricity. He also imporved the paving and lighting of the city streets to make the city life better.
I think he was talented and creative. He was not only good at one field, but also was good at a lot of things. He had so many different inventions in different fields. He must be good at maths, physics, mechanics, ship building and so on.
I think he was a great problem solver. Some of his inventions were created due to his real need. He had poor vision and he was tired of taking glasses on and off,so he invented bifocals to solve the problem.
I think he was brave and adventurous. It was dangerous to do experiments on electricity, but he experimented with simple equipment. He did that at the risk of his life.
He was historically important. His inventions have influence on our life today. We still use bifocals to see far and near at the same time. We still build watertight bulkheads. The lightning rods are still in use today to protect buildings and ships from damage caused by lightning.

Think and discuss
an encyclopaedia entry
Is Benjamin Franklin a newspaper article?
Why or why not?
The textbook calls “Benjamin Franklin” a “newspaper article”. What do you think? Do you remember what we discussed in the listening lesson? What is a newspaper article like?
A headline (title) with verb in present tense
A strong lead sentence that captures the reader’s interest.
A body that contains facts, details, interviews (if appropriate) and answers the 5 Ws and an H
If it’s not a newspaper article, what do you think the text is like? I think it is really more like an encyclopaedia entry. It contains known facts and ideas. And most importantly, a newspaper article should be new.
Good point! Although newspapers do cover historical figures, especially if the person is as important to a country’s history as Franklin was to the U.S.
An article related to something or someone in the PAST must be relevant to the PRESENT (It must be timely: done or happening at the right time).
Ben Franklin died in 1790, over 200 years ago. As famous as he was, how do modern journalists make Ben Franklin and others like him “new” and interesting to today’s readers?
Let me show you an example that just does that. It’s a feature newspaper article about Franklin which appeared on Jan. 17, 2017, on his 311th birthday. And this can be your homework. Read and try to figure out how the journalist made it ‘new’.
