Accompanied by her father, using a combination of aid and free climbing and taking advantage of some special equipment and ropes for protection, 10-year-old Selah made it to the top of El Capitan on June 12 after five days of big wall climbing.
Climbing the challenging and adventurous Nose route of El Capitan was a labour of love for Selah in more than one way. Her parents, Mike and Joy Schneiter, fell in love on this 3,000-plus-foot huge rock and she has always wanted to feel the way that her parents felt when they were up there together. Selah showed great interest in rock climbing at an early age. She wore her first rock-climbing equipment shortly after she learned to walk. She first dreamed of climbing El Capitan when she was 6 or 7.
El Capitan is a famous mountain-sized rock in Yosemite National Park. Getting to its top is no easy task. It’s taller, as reported, than the tallest building in the world — Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. El Capitan, with its difficult Nose route, which runs more than 3,000 feet high up the centre of the rock’s face, is considered one of the world’s hardest big wall climbs and has attracted the best climbers over time. But never before had a youngster accomplished it.
Selah’s achievement caught national attention. Outside Magazine called her the youngest documented person to climb the Nose. Ken Yager, president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, said he also couldn’t think of anyone younger who had done it.
Selah didn’t talk much about her El Capitan accomplishment. “I’m not necessarily a special kid or anything like that, she said. “There were a few times when I would be so worn that it somewhat discouraged me from holding on. But overall, it was just great to keep going.”
Selah shared this advice for other young climbers dreaming of big walls, “It doesn’t necessarily take a super special person to achieve something like that. You just have to put your mind to it.”
19. What do we learn about Selah climbing El Capitan?
A. She got inspired by her family history. B. She began her climbing on June 12.
C. She managed without any external help. D. She was the first female to reach the top.
20. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To arouse readers’ interest in El Capitan.
B. To provide basic information about El Capitan.
C. To stress the challenge of climbing El Capitan.
D. To state the reasons for El Capitan’s popularity.
21. Which of the following words best describe Selah?
A. Realistic and fortunate. B. Flexible and selfless.
C. Efficient and inspiring. D. Humble and determined.
22. What may be Selah’s advice for other young climbers?
A. Nothing is impossible for a genius. B. Dream big and aim high.
C. Chance favours the prepared mind. D. Be committed to your ambition.
A 20. C 21. D 22. D

C
Discussing tech overuse with Gen Z isn’t groundbreaking. We all acknowledge the impact of daily device usage on our health, well-being, and ability to focus. A friend suggests that one day, we’ll regard social media use as smoking — we know it’s harmful, but we might need assistance to quit.
Popular social media and online dating platforms are intentionally programmed to grab our attention and keep us coming back for more. On platforms like TikTok, the “For You” page constantly refreshes with new content. Even making a successful match on a dating app can be as thrilling as winning on a slot machine (赌博机). Research compares humans on social media to rats in an experiment box by psychologist B. F. Skinner. When we share vacation pictures on Instagram, the likes we receive encourage us to repeat the behavior in future.
But beyond app design, the reasons for our inability to disconnect from unhealthy social media are complex. It likely results from a lack of face-to-face social interaction. Even in busy university centers, unscheduled interactions are rare; earbud-clad individuals signal their preference for undisturbed peace.
For many Gen Z members, most social interactions now occur partially online. However, not everyone fits this pattern; some have active offline lives and use phones minimally. But for many, resisting the phone’s temptation is tough — being offline often means feeling alone when everyone else is online.
Royce Branning, a 2018 graduate, founded ClearSpace, an app to reduce screen time, showing Gen Z’s efforts to fight against tech overuse. However, tech-based solutions to tech-based problems are only half the story. Similar to smoking and secondhand smoke, excessive Internet use reduces in-person connection opportunities.
There is a story in my family. My grandfather, who had been smoking for 15 years, quit smoking upon seeing his son playing with cigarettes. Today, young adults swear to avoid raising “iPad kids”. While promising to get rid of future generations’ bad habits is admirable, quitting ourselves beforehand would be even better.
23. How do social media and online dating platforms keep users engaged?
A. By organizing offline activities. B. By designing addictive functions.
C. By keeping connections with users. D. By providing users with platforms.
24. What do the underlined words “earbud-clad individuals” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. People enjoying being alone. B. People tolerating nearby noise.
C. People having an ear disorder. D. People suffering social anxiety.
25. Why is ClearSpace mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. To display the determination of Gen Z.
B. To stress the seriousness of tech overuse.
C. To show the limitations of such solutions.
D. To discuss methods against tech addiction.
26. What is the best title for the text?
A. Solutions to Social Media Detox B. Gen Z’s Struggle with Tech Addiction
C. Gen Z’s Desire to Communication D. Impacts of Tech Addiction on Gen Z
B 24. A 25. C 26. B
由文章第二段中“Popular social media and online dating platforms are intentionally programmed to grab our attention and keep us coming back for more. (流行的社交媒体和在线约会平台被有意地编程,以吸引我们的注意力,让我们回来寻求更多。)”可知,它们通过设计上瘾的功能来保持用户的参与度。故选B。
【24题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第三段中“Even in busy university centers, unscheduled interactions are rare; earbud-clad individuals signal their preference for undisturbed peace. (即使在繁忙的大学中心,计划外的互动也很少见;earbud-clad individuals表示他们更喜欢不受干扰的宁静。)”可知,他们更喜欢不受打扰的平静,所以这些是喜欢独处的人。因此,earbud-clad individuals指的是“喜欢独处的人”,与选项A“People enjoying being alone. (喜欢独处的人)”意思相符。故选A。
由文章第五段中“Royce Branning, a 2018 graduate, founded ClearSpace, an app to reduce screen time, showing Gen Z’s efforts to fight against tech overuse. However, tech-based solutions to tech-based problems are only half the story. (2018届毕业生Royce Branning创立了ClearSpace,这是一款减少屏幕时间的应用程序,展示了Z世代为反对过度使用科技产品所做的努力。然而,以技术解决技术问题只是故事的一半。)”可知,提到ClearSpace是为了展示这种解决方案的局限性。故选C。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Discussing tech overuse with Gen Z isn’t groundbreaking. We all acknowledge the impact of daily device usage on our health, well-being, and ability to focus. A friend suggests that one day, we’ll regard social media use as smoking — we know it’s harmful, but we might need assistance to quit.
D
While Matt Damon relied on potatoes cultivated in biowaste to survive in the hit film The Martian, the researchers say it is a humble desert moss (藓类) that might prove crucial to establishing life on Mars.
Scientists in China say they’ve found Syntrichia caninervis, a moss native to Antarctic and desert regions, could endure Mars-like conditions, such as drought, high levels of radiation, and extreme cold. The moss demonstrated remarkable recovery ability: it could regenerate under normal growth conditions after spending up to five years at -80℃, up to 30 days at -196℃, and after exposure to gamma rays. To further test its adaptability, the research team created a set-up with Mars-like pressures, temperatures, gases, and UV radiation. The moss not only survived in this man-made Martian environment but also regenerated under normal growth conditions, even after seven days of exposure.
“These experiments represent an important first step, but they do not show that the moss could be a significant source of oxygen under Martian conditions, nor do they show that the desert moss could reproduce in the Martian context,” McDaniel said. “Implying that moss, or any other pioneering species, is ready to terraform (行星地球化) Mars, or any other outer planet, is an overstatement.” Zupanska added.
Dr. Wiger of Wageningen University, also raised concerns, including that temperatures on the red planet rarely got above freezing, making outdoor plant growth impossible, while the new study did not use Mars-like soil. “The mosses were treated under Mars circumstances for a maximum of several days and then regrown under Earth conditions on sand,” he remarked. “This, of course, doesn’t show at all they can grow under Mars conditions.”
However, Prof. Edward Guinan of Villanova University in the US described the study as impressive. “This moss, highly tolerant to extremes, could promise to be a pioneer plant for Mars colonization,” he stated, although he noted the moss would need water to grow.
“We have a lot of things to do,” he added. “But this lowly desert moss offers hope for making small portions of Mars habitable for humankind in the future.”
27. What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning the potatoes?
A. The potatoes played a crucial role in the film.
B. The moss led to survival of the potatoes on Mars.
C. The moss may survive on Mars like these potatoes.
D. The success of the film resulted from the potato plots.
28. Which characteristic of the moss is mentioned in the text?
A. Resistant to water. B. Adaptable to Martian soil.
C. Oxygen-producing on Mars. D. Regenerative under Earth conditions.
29. What can be implied from what McDaniel and Zupanska said?
A. The moss has a long way to be a Martian plant.
B. It is unlikely that the earth species can grow on Mars.
C. The experiments about the moss were a complete success.
D. They will research into reproducing the moss in the Martian context.
30. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. Can Mars actually become a second Earth?
B. Can scientists create a set-up similar to Mars?
C. Can a moss become a pioneer living on Mars?
D. Can researchers make it to Mars colonization?
C 28. D 29. A 30. C

Happiness is a loving family, a good meal, and a yearly income of $75, 000. According to a study, as people earn more money, their day-to-day happiness rises until their yearly income hits $75, 000. ___31___
The appeal is easy to see. The study provided a simple solution to a tricky life problem and, to people making less than $75, 000, offered a goal to struggle for. But like those other experiments, the popular perception of the research is wrong. ___32___ No. But it can improve happiness if you spend it thoughtfully.
___33___ These include your work, health, relationships, schedule, education, personality, life philosophy, and so on. If you’re secure, healthy, living in a good neighborhood, and enjoying an active social life, then the figure in your checkbook doesn’t weigh as much on your daily happiness. In other words, if you’re struggling, unhealthy, lonely, or living in an unsafe neighborhood, then your financial difficulty will likely worsen those challenges.
根据上文“According to a study, as people earn more money, their day-to-day happiness rises until their yearly income hits $75, 000.(根据一项研究,随着人们赚的钱越来越多,他们的日常幸福感也会上升,直到年收入达到75000美元)”可知,空处应该接着讲述年收入达到75000美元之后人们的幸福感会如何。
But it can improve happiness if you spend it thoughtfully.(不。但如果你深思熟虑地花钱,它可以提高幸福感)”可知,此处是在回答一个关于金钱和幸福关系的问题,且答案是否定的,即金钱不能直接买到幸福,空处应该提出问题。选项A“金钱能买到幸福吗?”符合语境,且引出下文的回答。故选A。
根据下文“These include your work, health, relationships, schedule, education, personality, life philosophy, and so on.(这些包括你的工作、健康、人际关系、日程安排、教育、个性、人生哲学等等)”可知,此处是在列举影响幸福的多种因素,说明幸福是一种复杂的情感。
根据上文“It is true that there is a strong connection between happiness and money. But it doesn’t mean that money can buy happiness.(的确,幸福和金钱之间有着密切的联系。但这并不意味着金钱能买到幸福)”和下文“It merely stands in for the things, services, and experiences we buy with it.(它只是代表了我们用它购买的东西、服务和体验)”可知,空处是在解释金钱与幸福之间的关系,即金钱只是一种交换媒介,它本身并不能直接带来幸福,而是我们通过金钱购买的东西、服务和体验带来了幸福。选项B“毕竟,金钱只是一种交换媒介”符合语境,承上启下。故选B。
【35题详解】
根据上文“Spend your money on the things, experiences, and necessities.(把你的钱花在事物、经历和必需品上)”和下文“Otherwise, your spending habits can actively work against your well-being and life satisfaction.(否则,你的消费习惯会对你的幸福感和生活满意度产生负面影响)”可知,此处是在建议人们如何花钱才能带来快乐,即把钱花在正确的地方会让生活更快乐。

故填which。

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt like a lone wolf, struggling against the complexities of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his otherwise dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.”
Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith.
Under Ms Lau’s guidance Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one’s comfort zone.
The day of departure arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn’t help but feel amazed as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. The busy streets, bright colors, and unfamiliar sounds flooded his senses. Yet, Ms Lau’s comforting presence by his side provided him with the strength to face the unknown.

Indeed, they are the cause of some of those struggles.
It is true that there is a strong connection between happiness and money. But it doesn’t mean that money can buy happiness. ___34___ It merely stands in for the things, services, and experiences we buy with it. So when it comes to discussing money and happiness, it’s not just about how much money you have. It also depends on how you use it.
Spend your money on the things, experiences, and necessities. ___35___ Otherwise, your spending habits can actively work against your well-being and life satisfaction. In a word, people with more money are happier isn’t just the size of their bank accounts —it’s how they use their money to generate happiness.
A. Can money buy happiness?
B. Money is a medium of exchange after all.
C. Are people happy without enough money?
D. Then your money will make your life happier.
E. At this point, their happiness tends to stabilize.
F. Happiness rose alongside income all the way up.
G. Happiness is a complex emotion influenced by many factors.

One day after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes.
Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip.
