If you hear someone say that there’s “an elephant in the room”, there’s no need to be worried. This is an idiom that means there’s a big, clear problem or difficult situation that people don’t want to talk about. It’s almost as if there’s an elephant standing in the corner, but everyone is pretending it’s not there! So you might understand why “The elephant in the room” is the name Dutch artist Johannes-Harm Hovinga gave to his new project.
For 20 days during June and July, 2024, Hovinga sat in a museum in the Dutch city of Arnhem and used a tool to make holes in the 7,700-page United Nations report on climate change.
This was an artistic protest. He wanted to draw attention to climate change and to show that the world’s governments aren’t doing enough to try to save the planet. “Climate change is the elephant in the room”, Hovinga was saying through his art— the big, clear problem that we’ re not doing enough about.
He had printed the pages of the report on different colored paper so that when he made the holes, there were large piles of colorful circles next to the table where he sat. People were able to watch Hovinga making his holes between June 22 and July 14, and see those piles getting bigger. Some visitors were touched as they watched, the museum said.
Each day Hovinga sat for six hours making holes, only drinking water and taking short breaks to use the bathroom. He said he began taking painkillers after two days because of the pain in his back, neck, and arms. The project ended on July 25 when Hovinga returned to take the paper piles away. But he has more hole-making projects planned for the future.
4. Why is the idiom mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To lead in the name of a project. B. To describe an interesting scene.
C. To explain a common language usage. D. To show a special animal painted by an artist.
5. What is Hovinga’s purpose of his behavior?
A. To promote his artworks. B. To help protect the earth.
C. To advertise a new art style. D. To call for action to care for elephants.
6. Which of the following can best describe Hovinga?
A. Odd but flexible. B. Humorous and energetic.
C. Picky but productive. D. Creative and responsible.
7. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A. Hovinga had great fun doing his work.
B. Hovinga wants more people to join him.
C. Hovinga will continue with similar projects.
D. Hovinga broke off the project because of pain.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. C

Researchers in the US are developing an app called FoodImage to handle the problem of food waste. This app is based on a previous app named SmartIntake, which measures food consumption by comparing photos taken before and after meals.
According to Corby Martin, a clinical psychologist at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, SmartIntake allows users to take photos of their plates before and after eating. These images are then sent to servers where researchers analyze the food for its calorie and nutrient content. Martin believes this photo comparison method can be adapted to measure how much food is left uneaten and ends up as waste.
“We fully expect that SmartIntake can measure food waste, but it needs to be improved to capture (捕捉) waste wherever it occurs,” says Martin. The goal is to measure not just leftovers but also waste produced during meal preparation and whether leftovers are ever consumed. This is important because, according to Brian Roe, a behavioral economist at Ohio State University, Americans waste about a quarter of the food they buy annually (about 40 million tons, which also means 1.5 million tons of food was thrown away every day), costing each family between $1,365 and $2,275.
FoodImage aims to provide researchers with exact data on when and how food waste occurs. For instance, if a household buys food in large amounts because it’s on sale, FoodImage could help determine if this leads to increased waste, advice against such buying will be possibly given.
Efforts to reduce food waste are gaining attention globally. The US Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency have set a goal to halve America’ s food waste by 2030.
The Food I mage project is currently at the research stage, which the researchers hope to complete by the end of the year. Martin and Roe think it will take 9 to 12 months to develop the final product once funding is solved. “If we can conduct studies that really point out how the different approaches affect household behaviors, then we can help prioritize which of these will deliver the biggest impact,” says Roe. “But you need good household-level data to accomplish that.”
8. What do the figures in paragraph 3 indicate?
A. The seriousness of food waste in the US.
B. The high living costs of American families.
C How difficult it is for people to reduce food waste.
D. How useful SmartIntake is in measuring food waste.
9. What is the main function of the FoodImage app?
A. Raising people’s awareness of healthy eating.
B. Teaching people how to cook with less food waste.
C. Offering researchers detailed information on food waste.
D. Helping researchers to determine the food quality correctly.
10. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The FoodImage project is well received by the public.
B. Information from the household is important to the project.
C. The research stage of the project will take another 9 months.
D. Lack of money is the main problem for the project’s development.
11. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. Global Efforts to Reduce Food Waste
B. The Role of Hi-Tech in Managing Food Waste
C. FoodImage: A New Approach to Food Waste
D. SmartIntake: A Good Measure of Food Consumption
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. C

Literature students once read three books a week but today they struggle to make it through one in three weeks, Sir Jonathan Bate, a professor of English literature at the University of Oxford, has warned.
Bate put the drop in the number of books read by students down to shorter attention spans (持续时间), which he linked to the use of smartphones. “The currently fashionable answer is that it’s to do with the attrition of attention span due to smartphones, six-minute YouTube videos and soon,” he said. “It all begins in schools. You only have to look at the thinning of the GCSE and the tendency to recommend shorter works.”
Bate suggested that, in contrast to students from privately educated backgrounds, those from state schools in Britain usually haven’t been introduced to a wide variety of lengthy books and haven’t formed the habit of reading them either. He said it was because those students come from disadvantaged schools where the teachers’ main task is crowd control, and so the demands in terms of reading long books are just not there.
Fortunately, state-funded charter schools in the US offer classical education, with more flexibility in curriculum (课程). Bate’s son, a recent graduate from a charter high school called Great Hearts, studied works like The Iliad and Crime and Punishment. The school even provided bagels for studying Hegel (a famous writer). “I couldn’t understand Hegel when I was a graduate student. I’m amazed that 17-year-old American kids are reading Hegel. So there is some hope,” Bate said that the long-term impact of not habitually reading long texts was troubling for the future of literary culture.
“If you haven’ t got readers, what are writers going to do? The intensive, thoughtful, quiet reading of great books is good for mental health; it’ s very good for developing skills for concentration and critical thinking — and if that falls away, that is problematic for society and for individuals.”
12. What does the underlined word “attrition” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Expansion. B. Decrease. C. Destruction. D. Progress.
13. What can we know about the students from state schools in Britain?
A. They have limited access to long books.
B. They prioritize crowd control over reading.
C. They are likely to read more classical books.
D. They enjoy advantage over those from private schools.
14. What is Bate’s attitude towards the future of literature in the US?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Uncaring. D. Optimistic.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A There is a tendency that students read fewer books.
B. It is necessary for students to read classic books.
C. No exposure to books is bad for students’ mental health.
D. Reading short works can improve students’ concentration.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. A

【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要围绕英国牛津大学英语文学教授Jonathan Bate对学生阅读习惯的变化所表达的担忧和观点展开。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第一段“Literature students once read three books a week but today they struggle to make it through one in three weeks, Sir Jonathan Bate, a professor of English literature at the University of Oxford, has warned.(牛津大学英国文学教授Jonathan Bate爵士警告称,文学专业的学生曾经每周能读完三本书,但如今,他们三周读完一本都很吃力。)”可知,文章第一段提到学生现在读书数量大幅下降;再根据划线单词所在句“Bate put the drop in the number of books read by students down to shorter attention spans(持续时间), which he linked to the use of smartphones.( Bate将学生读书数量的减少归因于注意力持续时间……,他认为这与智能手机的使用有关。)”可知,Bate认为这种下降与智能手机使用有关。由此可推测,这里是说智能手机导致注意力持续时间“减少”,所以学生读书数量才下降。选项B“decrease”意为“减少”,与此相符。故选B。
13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Bate suggested that, in contrast to students from privately educated backgrounds, those from state schools in Britain usually haven’t been introduced to a wide variety of lengthy books and haven’t formed the habit of reading them either.( Bate指出,与接受私立教育背景的学生相比,英国公立学校的学生通常没有接触过种类繁多的长篇书籍,也没有养成阅读长篇书籍的习惯。)”可知,英国公立学校的学生通常没有接触过很多长篇书籍,即他们接触长篇书籍的机会有限。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Bate’s son, a recent graduate from a charter high school called Great Hearts, studied works like The Iliad and Crime and Punishment. The school even provided bagels for studying Hegel (a famous writer). “I couldn’t understand Hegel when I was a graduate student. I’m amazed that 17-year-old American kids are reading Hegel. So there is some hope,” Bate said that the long-term impact of not habitually reading long texts was troubling for the future of literary culture.( Bate的儿子刚从一所名为“伟大心灵”的特许高中毕业,他学习过《伊利亚特》和《罪与罚》等作品。 并且Bate说“So there is some hope”,由此可以推断出他对美国文学的未来持乐观态度。
故选A。

Most people spend a lot of their lives on their feet, just getting from here to there. Though it may seem less than self-evident, it turns out that not wearing shoes when walking or running could be beneficial for foot-strength, balance, and the awareness of body motion. ____16____. However, the ability to use one’s feet properly can have an effect on the whole body. And that’s where walking barefoot comes in.
According to a 2021 study published in Nature, people who walked barefoot for six months increased their foot strength by over 57 percent. ____17____. Some other benefits of walking barefoot include increasing body awareness, a better gait (步态) which can help with the mechanics of your knees and core, and less pain in your lower back due to stronger leg muscles.
“Our feet are actually really strong and can deal with the demands we place on them. ____18____,” Rina Harris, a foot expert, said. “And the majority of modern shoes don’t allow their wearers to use all the benefits their feet provide. The cushioned insoles (缓冲鞋垫) make it hard to get sensory input through the feet, and the ends of most shoes squish (挤压) the toes together, making it difficult to engage all the feet muscles.”
However, it’s important not to just go diving feet first into barefoot walking. You must have the appropriate amount of foot strength first before taking on barefoot walking or running as a lifestyle. Also, it’ s important to begin walking barefoot inside for fifteen to twenty minutes, increasing the time as you get stronger. ____19____. It’s also a good idea to practice some simple balance exercises as well. Once you have gained the necessary strength and experience, you can try your hand at something more intensive, like barefoot running. ____20____.
A. However, we don’t use them as nature intended
B. It also helped them with their balance and reduced falls
C. Whether in the sand or on grass, a mindful walk works wonders
D. So next time you get up on your feet, consider leaving your shoes behind
E. Foot strength isn’t something people tend to spend much time thinking about
F. Shoes strongly limit the movement of specific areas of the feet, especially the toes
G. Once you move outside, practice on safe surfaces such as grass or a sandy beach
【答案】16. E 17. B 18. A 19. G 20. D

根据上文“Though it may seem less than self-evident, it turns out that not wearing shoes when walking or running could be beneficial for foot-strength, balance, and the awareness of body motion.(尽管这一点可能并非显而易见,但事实证明,走路或跑步时不穿鞋,可能对增强脚部力量、提升平衡能力以及增强身体运动感知都有益处)”可知,上文提到不穿鞋走路有益。而空后则以“However”转折,表明脚力对全身有影响。选项E“Foot strength isn’t something people tend to spend much time thinking about (人们往往不会花太多时间去考虑脚部力量)”指出人们通常不太花时间考虑脚力,与后文形成转折,说明虽然人们不常关注脚力,但它对全身有影响。故选E。
【17题详解】
根据上文“According to a 2021 study published in Nature, people who walked barefoot for six months increased their foot strength by over 57 percent.(根据2021年发表在《自然》杂志上的一项研究,连续六个月赤足行走的人,脚部力量增强了超过57%。)”可知,上文提到了赤足行走的好处,赤足行走六个月能增加脚部力量。选项B“It also helped them with their balance and reduced falls (这还有助于他们保持平衡并减少摔倒)”进一步说明它还能帮助平衡和减少摔倒,也是赤足行走的好处,承接前文。故选B。
【18题详解】

根据上文“It’s also a good idea to practice some simple balance exercises as well. Once you have gained the necessary strength and experience, you can try your hand at something more intensive, like barefoot running.(同时,练习一些简单的平衡练习也是个不错的主意。一旦你获得了必要的力量和经验,你就可以尝试更剧烈一些的活动,比如赤足跑步)”可知,上文提到了赤足行走的好处及注意事项,最后总结。选项D“So next time you get up on your feet, consider leaving your shoes behind (所以,下次当你起身要走的时候,不妨考虑把鞋子留在一边)”建议下次起身时考虑不穿鞋,符合文章总结性的结尾。故选D。

There are always things in our life that teach us a lesson and let us know how stupid and ridiculous (荒谬) we have been. I had such an experience years ago.
Progressing into the senior high school, I laid my eyes on the modern campus, the breathtaking scenery and energetic peers (同龄人). The school was undoubtedly newer and bigger than the one I had attended one year before.
Dealing with interpersonal relationships was always a headache for me. The night before, I had made up my mind that I would relate well with my classmates as long as I became friends with those cool and popular guys. To make myself stand out, I replaced my worn schoolbag with a brand new one, with an image of a cute Brown Bear on it.
Lost in the joy of starting my new journey, I went upstairs to my classroom, only to find the walls of the hall were decorated with mathematical formulas. I stood in front of the wall, puzzled. Then, a girl with a plain appearance came up and asked, “The walls are intended to create a study atmosphere where students can memorize formulas as easily as possible. I’m Shirley. What’s your name?” Even though she seemed warm-hearted and friendly, she was definitely not the kind of person I desired to be associated with. In response, I decided to tell her my name anyway. When we reached my classroom, Shirley said, “I hope you lead a fulfilling life here. I’m in Class 348, next to yours.” At that moment, I even had the thought that I wouldn’t meet Shirley any more.
Then, I stepped into the classroom, expecting to find my expected “friends”. A scene caught my attention — a handsome boy wearing Nike clothes was surrounded by dozens of boys and girls. I believed this guy was the most welcomed, so I walked to him and began to introduce myself. I said, “Hello. I’m new here. My name is Eason.” Without looking into my eyes, he simply said, “Sam.” I continued, “Could you tell me how to apply for a student card?” “No, I am busy now,” he replied coldly.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stood there, not knowing what to do next.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What Shirley did for me made me awkward and ashamed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I stood there, not knowing what to do next. Suddenly, I felt so embarrassed and frustrated. I had expected a warm welcome and friendly interaction, but instead, I was met with coldness and indifference. My heart sank, and I felt a sense of isolation and confusion. Just as I was at a complete loss, desperately trying to figure out my next move, I heard a familiar voice. It was Shirley. She came up to me with a gentle smile and kind eyes, saying, “I saw what happened. Let me help you with the student card.”
What Shirley did for me made me awkward and ashamed. I had judged her based on her appearance and ignored her kindness earlier. Now she was the one who came to my rescue without any hesitation or complaint. I realized how shallow and wrong I had been. My face flushed with embarrassment as I reflected on my behavior. From that moment on, I decided to change my attitude and not judge people by their appearance. I thanked Shirley sincerely from the bottom of my heart and promised to be a better person.

Each day, Hovinga sat for six hours making holes, only drinking water and taking short breaks to use the bathroom.
6 Which of the following can best describe Hovinga?
A. Odd but flexible. B. Humorous and energetic.
C. Picky but productive. D. Creative and responsible.
7. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A. Hovinga had great fun doing his work.
B. Hovinga wants more people to join him.
C. Hovinga will continue with similar projects.
D. Hovinga broke off the project because of pain.

C. How difficult it is for people to reduce food waste.

A. There is a tendency that students read fewer books.
B. It is necessary for students to read classic books.
C. No exposure to books is bad for students’ mental health.
D. Reading short works can improve students’ concentration.

There are always things in our life that teach us a lesson and let us know how stupid and ridiculous (荒谬) we have been I had such an experience years ago.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stood there, not knowing what to do next.
