My Family Tradition
Dear teachers and fellow classmates,
I am honored to stand here and share with you my family tradition — honesty.
When I was a child, I found a wallet in the park which was filled with money. I was really excited because I could buy lots of toys. But then, I remembered what my parents had always taught me — to be honest. So, I waited still for a long time until the owner finally came back. With relief and gratitude in his eyes, I felt a sense of pride and happiness.
This family tradition of honesty has a huge impact on me. I never cheat in exams and my friends trust me deeply. It is like a lighthouse, guiding me through the journey of life. Not only does it shape my character but also influences my actions and decisions.
Thank you for your listening!
67.The hours passed and no fish appeared. We ate our sandwiches and changed locations a couple of times, all to no avail. We did not get a single bite or even a nibble. My excitement had given way to disappointment. Feeling my frustration, my grandfather leaned over and whispered, “Patience is key, my boy. Fishing isn’t just about catching; it’s about enjoying the moment.” I looked around at the serene pond, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, and the chorus of birds singing in the distance. Suddenly, I felt a deep appreciation for the beauty surrounding us.
With renewed determination, I focused on the water. Suddenly, I spotted a ripple by the pond’s edge, and my heart raced. Suddenly, my cork moved up and down, and I felt a pull on the line. “I think I caught one!” I yelled, full of excitement. With my grandfather’s help, I reeled in the line, and to my surprise, a little sunfish came out of the water. At that moment, I realized the fishing trip wasn’t just about catching fish; it was about bonding, learning, and cherishing the moments we shared.

W: I am wondering why there are so many overweight people. There are many gyms here.
M: Well, there are certain factors that affect people’s size and weight.
W: What are they?
M: A recent study suggested that low-income groups have a higher percentage of overweight people than higher-income families.
W: Why?
M: The survey said that the low-income groups eat more junk food on a daily basis.
W: That makes sense. Junk food is cheaper but it contains lots of fat and oil. There is another reason why so many people are fat.
M: What’s that?
W: People don’t like doing exercise any more! Americans spend an average of 6 hours on TV every day.
M: Wow! No wonder people are so fat. What about you? Do you work out regularly?
W: Yeah, I do. And I started a diet and lost 10 pounds.
M: So what happened next?
W: Well, I quit and gained it back plus 5 pounds.
M: You should have kept trying.

W: Hello, and welcome to another edition of “Ask the Writer”, the show that puts your questions to members of the writing world. Today’s guest is Jin Oka, who has been writing comics for more than twenty years. It’s good to have you on the show, Jin.
M: It’s good to be here.
W: Jin, you were originally from Japan and moved to America when you were ten years old. You began selling your story ideas to comic publishers when you were just thirteen, so you weren’t in America that long before making an impression.
M: Yes, that’s right. I had grown up reading Japanese Manga comics but soon turned to Marvel and DC, which are both American comic publishers. When my dad got a job in New York, honestly, I was so excited, and I got into writing immediately.
W: Great stuff. Okay, let’s go to our listeners’ questions. The first one is from Chen who lives in Wuhan, China. She asks, “Who is your favorite superhero? ”
M: Ooh, great question! I fell in love with characters like Spider-Man, Superman, and the Hulk from an early age, but the coolest superhero is probably Batman.
W: He’s great, though Iron Man is my particular favorite! Keep listening, because after the break we’ll ask Jin about his new YouTube channel for comic lovers. Don’t go away!

W: I used to be afraid of getting up in front of a crowd to make presentations, but joining the debate team in high school completely changed my view on public speaking. At first, it was scary debating required researching various topics, thinking on my feet and arguing with facts or before an audience but with every practice and debate competition, I felt myself growing more and more comfortable. My teammates were supportive and we helped each other manage our difficulties. Eventually I learned to appreciate the power of using my voice to communicate ideas in front of others. And my confidence in other areas of my life has improved too. I became a better presenter in my class and even felt more at ease, talking to new people. If you’re ever feeling discouraged or unsure of yourself, remember that almost everyone feels nervous sometimes, but don’t let that hold you back. Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zoom and you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.

I live in California, about four miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales (座头鲸) come into the bay for a few days while they’re migrating. Each one is immense, about 15 meters long, and sometimes they turn their side fins, making it look like they are waving at us.
One day, my friend, Liz and I took out our yellow double kayak (皮艇) to watch the wildlife. After a half-hour, we spotted two pairs of whales swimming toward us. We were in awe: it’s an amazing feeling to be so close to a creature that size.
Believing if we paddled toward that spot, we'd be safe from the whales, since they’d just left, we followed them at what I believed was a safe distance. Suddenly, the kayak lifted out of the water and then tipped back into the ocean. My initial fear was that the whale intended to drag us down. In a heart-stopping moment, I realized that Liz and I weren’t just lifted by the whale — we were inside its mouth. My entire body was enveloped except for my right arm and paddle. Liz, meanwhile, was staring up into the whale’s jaw. Fearing to be swallowed, I kept thinking: I’ve got to get up; I’ve got to fight this; I’ve got to breathe.
Whales have enormous mouths but tiny throats. They spit out anything they can’t swallow. We were wearing life jackets, which likely helped us quickly reappear out of the water. The entire course lasted only ten seconds.
A few nearby people paddled over, including a retired firefighter who asked us if we were OK. “You were in the whale’s mouth!” he told us. “We thought you were dead.” I came so close to being injured or killed. I am much more appreciative of life now.
24.Why did the author and her friend go kayaking?
A.To go fishing. B.To watch humpback whales.
C.To race other kayakers. D.To swim with humpback whales.
25.What happened to the author and her friend while they were kayaking?

26.How did the author and Liz get out of their situation?
A.They took off their life jackets. B.They were spit out by the whale.
C.They fought back against the attacker. D.They paddled towards a nearby firefighter.
27.What lesson did the author learn from her experience?
A.Life is precious. B.We should protect wildlife.
C. Kayaking is a risky activity. D.Whales are dangerous animals

Parenting can feel like sailing in an endless sea of choices, styles and ideas, never knowing if you are making the right decision for your child or not. On the one hand, no two children are the same. On the other hand, there must be some similarities or at least some general methods that work for all children and that are worth following.
Whether you believe in rigorous boundaries or offering total freedom, it’s all about balance. And that is what lighthouse parenting, the new and modern parenting style that is becoming more and more popular, is all about.
Lighthouse parenting, founded by Dr. Ken Ginsburg, is a parenting style that is all about the most important aspects of parenting, such as open communication, according to Parents. Lighthouse parenting, he explained, is about maintaining the balance between providing your child with guidance, love and protection, while also allowing them to make their own mistakes and learn things on their own.
Some parenting styles such as helicopter parenting, are less about giving your child freedom and allowing them to experience things on their own. Lighthouse parenting, like the name suggests, believes in being there for your child like a lighthouse is there at night, available and present when needed, however not providing solutions all the time, therefore allowing the child to grow and learn to be independent.
According to the Children’s Book Council (CBC), this parenting style is becoming popular as parents are looking for a middle ground in parenting, something that does not add too much pressure on them. There is too much information out there for parents nowadays and it can get overwhelming. Lighthouse parenting seems to be a more reasonable choice.
Children that are raised in this style can become healthy, functional adults, as they are given the tools to understand the world and to be well-adjusted. They aren’t scared of making mistakes and also take responsibility for them. Their parents also are less burnt out, as they are able to take a step back and be there for their child more in the background.
28.What does the underlined word “rigorous” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Strict. B.Free. C.Consistent. D.General.
29.How does the author explain the parenting styles in paragraph 4?
A.By giving examples. B.By justifying assumptions.
C.By making comparisons. D.By analyzing causes and effects.
30.Why do parents prefer lighthouse parenting according to the CBC?
A.It is a new and trendy concept. B.It stops putting additional stress on them.
C.It requires minimum effort from parents. D.It ensures kids’ perfect behavior.
31.What is the best title of the text?
A.Free-range Parenting: The New Parenting Style
B.Helicopter Parenting: Overprotective Parenting Style
C.Lighthouse Parenting: The Uninvolved Parenting Style
D.Lighthouse Parenting: The Balanced Parenting Style
D
Clothing made from artificial materials, such as polyester (聚酯纤维), has many positive advantages. It is cheap to produce, lasts for a long time, and is comfortable to wear. However, the material has one major disadvantage. The tiny lint (纤维屑) from the material during each laundry cycle are big contributors to plastic pollution. Now, some scientists from Lithuania have found a way to recycle the waste into clean energy.
The researchers began by collecting lint from dryers across KTU’s (Kaunas University of Technology) dormitories. They then used a technique called pyrolysis (高温分解) to transform the lint waste into useful energy. The process involves heating the lint without oxygen. This causes the microfibers to turn into burnable gases and ashes.
The team, led by Dr. Samy Yousef, a senior researcher at KTU, published their findings in the journal Science of the Total Environment on March 25, 2021, showing that they were able to get three energy products — oil, gas, and charcoal — from the lint. More importantly, about 70 percent of the waste was turned into energy. Mathematical models done by the researchers indicate that 45 tons of microfibers — the amount generated by just one million people annually — could produce 13.8 tons of oil, 21.5 tons of gas, and 9.7 tons of charcoal, and result in an overall profit of about $12,0000.
Dr. Yousef has even thought of a creative way to gather the household waste. The researcher says, “I believe that the collection system, similar to deposit-return for drink containers, could be developed based on our research. A household would bring the lintmicrofiber to a collection point and receive some kind of reward for it.”
Though the technology is encouraging, it will take time to perfect and use on a large scale. While we cannot stop doing laundry, there are some easy ways to reduce our environmental impact. Washing those clothes less frequently, doing full loads, and line drying them all help reduce the pollution.
32.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The lint. B.Oxygen. C.The process. D.Energy.
33.Why does the writer provide so many data in Paragraph 3?
A.To urge immediate use of their findings. B.To show the potential of the technology.
C.To prove the seriousness of lint waste. D.To present the flexibility of pyrolysis.
34.Why are “deposit-return for drink containers” mentioned in the passage?
A.To explain a rule. B.To make a conclusion.
C.To make a prediction. D.To clarify an approach.
35.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Eco-friendly Technology Transforms Lint into Energy.
B.Scientists Have Reduced Plastic Pollution Sharply.
C.Creative Ways to Produce Energy Need Perfection.
D.Researchers Made New Discoveries about Lint.

Don’t Let Personality Types Define You
Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBTD), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. MBTI sorts people into 16 different personality types based on four key categories. Although these tests can provide useful insights, it’s important not to let them define or limit you.
36 . But people are complex. Our personalities can change over time, depending on experiences and growth. What the MBTI test reveals is just a snapshot of one’s preferences, not a complete definition of who you are. For example, if the test labels you as an “introvert”(性格内向的人), you may feel tempted to avoid social communication because you think it’s not in your nature to be outgoing. But you might find that your ability to enjoy social events increases over time. The key is not to accept the label as an unchangeable fact. 37 .
Similarly, if you are categorized as a “thinking” type, it might lead you to believe that you are always rational. 38 Emotional response is also an essential part of human nature, and embracing them can enhance your decision-making process and relationships.
Additionally, many people get caught up in the idea that their “type” limits their careers or personal choices. They might think, for instance, that an “introvert” would not be a good leader. 39 . Many introverts achieve success through careful listening and thoughtful decision-making. Don’t let de MBTI label stop you from pursuing opportunities that feel right for you.
Finally, one of the most important lessons we can learn from the MBTI is that we are not defined by one test or label. 40 . By focusing on our strengths and embracing the full complexity of our personalities, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives. We are all more than the labels we receive.
A.The reality is quite different.
B.The test results should be seen as a guide, not a limitation.
C.The MBTI system provides a simple way to categorize individuals based on their preferences.
D.But there are countless examples of introverts excelling in these types of roles.
E.You should see it as a starting point for self-reflection and growth.
F.However, it’s essential to understand that both parts of the personality are valuable.
G.The MBTI system can sometimes prevent individuals from realizing their full potential.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My grandparents were cattle ranchers (农场主) in West Texas. When I was very young, I would usually spend a few weeks each summer with my grandparents at the ranch. I enjoyed this immensely and still consider these times as some of the best in my life.
I was about eight years old in the 1950s when my grandfather asked if I would like to go fishing with him. I seized the chance; I had seen other kids and adults fish before, but I was always considered too young to fish myself. When my grandfather offered to take me fishing I knew that I was no longer a baby and I was more than eager to throw my line in the water and take my place among the older kids and adults. I was beyond excited; I raced around the house as my grandmother made sandwiches for us and my grandfather assembled the fishing gear, which consisted of two cane poles (藤制鱼竿), hooks and line, and a couple of corks (浮标). I ran to my grandfather’s old pickup truck and jumped into the front seat while the old man put the poles in the back and drove us slowly to a pond nearby.
It was early in the morning and the brutal heat of the Texas summer was still several hours away. My grandfather led me to a shaded spot underneath a big tree whose branches hung over the water’s edge. He took a great delight in explaining to me about how to bait my hook, how much line to leave between the hook and the cork, and the importance of what he called his “secret fisherman’s trick” — spitting on the bait. He assured me that this technique was very effective in getting the fish to bite. After listening intently to every word he said, I took the pole and dropped my line into the still water, just as he did. We settled back and waited; I began to imagine taking home a bucket loaded with gigantic fish and being envied by everyone for being such a great fisherman.
注意:
