Let’s explore the splendid botanic gardens of the world.
Royal Botanic Garden, London, England
The Royal Botanic Garden is thought to be the largest one in the world, a 121-hectare site on the edge of London, home to the world’s biggest collection of living plants and more than 8.5 million preserved plant specimens (标本). Its mission is to protect plants for the future of all life on Earth. Designed by artist Wolfgang Buttress, it features a thousand LEDs that light up and create a musical piece!
Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The garden stands as a symbol of Brazil’s rich diversity of wildlife, containing over 6,000 species of tropical plants and trees. 40 percent of the site is farmed; the rest is Atlantic Forest spreading up the mountains. It is home to Capuchin monkeys, along with over 140 species of birds, including toucans and white-necked hawks.
Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier, France
The garden was originally intended for the medical education of student doctors. Lost and remade more than once over the centuries, it does not reduce the importance of either the site or the vision of those who have created it, still faithful to its early purpose as a teaching garden.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, South Africa
Its collection of more than 7,000 species mainly consists of local plants in southern Africa. Famous for its Protea Garden, it also has a Medicinal Garden, focusing on African and native uses of plants. Today, the garden’s primary concern is to “defend the exploration, conservation and appreciation of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all South Africans.”
1. What makes the Royal Botanic Gardens stand out?
A. Its founder. B. Its location. C. Its large size. D. Its long history.
2. Which garden would you visit if you are interested in animals?

A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read out numbers — 74,470, 70,809, 98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problems.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads, so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry. But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step.
My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.
4. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To prove the difficulty of math. B. To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C. To show the high intelligence of Stevenson. D. To stress the importance of abacus learning.
5. What do we know about the author from paragraph 3?
A. He was weak in math. B. He was good at computer.
C. He regarded math as useful. D. He had a close relationship with kids.
6. What does the author realize from his learning experience?
A. Knowledge starts with practice. B. It’s never too late to learn.
C. Faith can move mountains. D. Practice makes perfect.
7. What does the underlined word “baffled” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Excited. B. Inspired. C. Defeated. D. Interested.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据第一段“For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.(对于每一个问题,她都闭上眼睛,然后她右手的手指开始移动。她正确地回答了大部分问题)”以及第二段“The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘).(她成功的关键是一种叫做算盘的古老技术)”可推知,第一段的主要目的是引出算盘这个主题。
根据第三段“I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.(我是许多对数学有疑问的人之一,我感到一丝恐惧。我的典型解决方案是回避,如果我必须计算诸如百分比变化之类的东西,我会上网)”可推知,作者对数学有疑惑,且对数学有一丝恐惧,故作者的数学不好。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry. But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus.(经过几节算盘课和大量的练习,数学似乎没那么可怕了。我没有成为欧几里得,几何学的奠基人。但这种做法消除了我对数字的恐惧。这是一种久经考验的算盘的力量)”可推知,作者从他的学习经历中意识到熟能生巧。故选D。
7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence. (对他们来说,这些只是小小的成功,但这就是她们最终建立自信的方式)”可知,孩子们学算盘学的不错,获得成功,说明最小的女儿也解开了曾经打败自己的数学题。故划线词与C项“Defeated(打败)”意思相近。故选C。
C
Cats communicate a variety of messages using cat body language. Examples include arching (弓起) their backs as a signal of fear or attack, and slowly blinking (眨) their eyes to signal relaxation. Mouth open and no teeth showed suggests a feeling of playfulness. A cat which chooses to lie on its back shows happiness, trust and comfort. Cats show dissatisfaction by moving their ears back, equal to a human frown.
As is the case with dogs, a twitching (抽动) tail can mean a little anger while a tail held high suggests confidence. Cats will twitch their tails when hunting or angry, while larger twitching suggests displeasure. They may also twitch their tails when playing. A tail held high is a sign of happiness, or can be used as a greeting towards humans or other cats (usually close relatives) while half-raised shows less pleasure, and unhappiness is expressed with a tail held low.
Some characteristic signals, however, are often misunderstood. It is important to keep in mind that each cat may show its feelings with different body language. For instance, a cat rubbing its body along an arm or leg of its owner is not only a way in which to attract attention and, perhaps, a way to ask for food; it is also a way of “marking” its owner as its own. Usually a cat with its tail held high and twitching shows excitement, but this is often mistaken for anger.
Many people fail or are too slow to understand the silent body language of cats. And they may have the false impression that cats are cold-hearted, unfaithful or not clever. To understand cats, people must observe a cat closely and learn what its body signals tell them.
8. Which cat body language shows that a cat is relaxed?
A. Lying on its stomach. B. Blinking its eyes slowly.
C. Holding its tail high. D. Moving its ears back.
9. According to the passage, a cat will twitch its tail EXCEPT ____.
A. when it feels sleepy B. when it is hunting
C. when it feels angry D. when it is playing
10. How many meanings does a cat’s rubbing its body along its owner have?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
11. The last paragraph intends to tell us ____.
A. many people often have wrong opinions on cats
B. it is not easy to understand cats’ body language
C. every cat has its own special body language
D. we should learn more about cats’ body language

Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents. This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the US and expected food production.
The researchers found that cities in the Northwest in the United States had the greatest potential to raise their own food. Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre of agricultural land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room for agricultural spreading.
The study revealed that the United States have a surplus (多余的) of agricultural land for feeding the domestic (国内的) population. Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production would start a conversation about how that land gets used. In the words of Peters, lead author and associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, “It would be important to make sure policies for supporting local or regional food production benefit conservation and create opportunities for farmers to adopt more sustainable (可持续的) practices. Policies should also recognize the ability of the natural resources in a given local or region and consider the supply chain, including ability for food processing and storage.”
Although it’s a far cry from the current reality, it is a nice thought to imagine cities surrounded by food production operations that transport freshly harvested food to nearby homes, and then make use of the leftover food to fertilize fields and generate heat for greenhouses.
12. The cities along the Eastern seaside fail to provide enough food because ________.
A. citizens are unwilling to grow crops B. the methods of food production are wrong
C. they don’t have enough land to grow crops D. their climate limits the agricultural production
13. What will the focus on local food production lead to?
A. More job opportunities for citizens. B. More specific policies about using land.
C. Conversations with the local government. D. A discussion on how to make use of land.
14. In which section can we read this text in a newspaper?
A. Agriculture. B. Entertainment. C. Lifestyle. D. Sport.
15. What is the best title of this text?
A. The US Government Stops Wasting Food
B. Many Cities in the US Can Grow Their Own Food
C. Cities Learn to Grow Food From the Villages
D. Farmers Have More Chances to Be Employed
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第二段最后两句“Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre of agricultural land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room for agricultural spreading.”(东部沿海城市和西南部城市的潜力最小,即使每英亩农田都用于粮食生产,它们也无法满足自身对饮食的全部需求。
根据第三段第二句“Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production would start a conversation about how that land gets used.”(目前,一些土地用于种植出口作物,但关注当地粮食生产将引发有关这些土地如何利用的讨论)可知,对当地粮食生产的关注将引发对如何利用土地的讨论。
根据第一段最后一句“This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the US and expected food production.”(这是塔夫茨大学一项有趣的新模型研究的发现,该研究分析了美国378个地区的当地粮食生产潜力和预期粮食生产)可知,文章是介绍了一项关于美国农业生产的调查研究,所以应来自一份报纸的农业版块。故选A。
根据第一段第一句“Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents.”(美国的许多城市可以在当地种植自己的粮食,种植和养殖足够的庄稼和牲畜,以满足所有居民的需求。)

故选A项。
结合小标题“Set goals and write them down(设定目标并写下来)”和下文“instead of making many projects that may upset you.(而不是做很多可能会让你心烦的项目)”可推知,正确的做法是:选择几个项目,作为自己的目标,并为之而努力。故选F项。
根据下文“and cross each step off the list as you complete it.(当你完成每一步的时候,把它从清单中划掉)”可推知,需要先制作一份清单,所以D项“Make a list of the steps needed to reach your goal(列一份实现目标所需的步骤的清单) ”符合语境,与下文构成顺承关系,且a list of the steps与下文each step off the list相照应。故选D项。
小标题“Make a list of the rewards related to any project to encourage yourself to persevere.(制作一份与项目相关的所有奖励的清单,鼓励自己坚持下去)”说要给予任何与项目相应的奖励来鼓励自己坚持下去。上文“When you want to lose 40 pounds, it may seem like a difficult goal.(当你想减掉40磅时,这似乎是一个困难的目标)”提出一个难题,E项“But there are big rewards for doing so.(但这样做可以得到很大的回报)”正是用小标题中提到的办法来解决这一问题,下文是对小标题中所述方法的举例说明。故选E项。
根据指代关系和下文“Read them over several times a day to encourage yourself to keep going.(每天多读几遍,鼓励自己坚持下去)”可知,设空句中应出现下文中提到的阅读内容,B项“Or you can write out a paragraph or two about how reaching your goal will change your life(或者你可以写一到两段文字,描述实现你的目标将如何改变你的生活)”中“a paragraph or two”正是下文阅读的内容,且B项也是小标题“Imagine your success”所说想象成功的一种方法。

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.

Its collection of more than 7000 species mainly consists of local plants in southern Africa. Famous for its Protea Garden, it also has a Medicinal Garden, focusing on African and native uses of plants. Today, the garden’s primary concern is to “defend the exploration, conservation and appreciation of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all South Africans.”

A. Excited. B. Inspired. C. Defeated. D. Interested.
C
Cats communicate a variety of messages using cat body language. Examples include arching (弓起) their backs as a signal of fear or attack and slowly blinking (眨) their eyes to signal relaxation.
D

13. What will the focus on local food production lead to?
A. More job opportunities for citizens. B. More specific policies about using land.
C. Conversations with the local government. D. A discussion on how to make use of land.

One day in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel.
That day after he returned home he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning.
